I think changing to Slipspace was the right call.

Changing to a different engine was the right thing if it helps 343i accomplish their goals to make Infinite great and bring us together to play after almost 3 years since Guardians been released. We had been on the same engine since CE which had been modified over time up to Halo 5. From Halo 5 and its tech issues to make the game small (which isnt due to being about 100gbs) and consistent to play on the Xbox being by specs weaker then the PS4 should help it run better.

Imo they didn’t need to create a whole new engine. They could’ve just improved the current engine they already have and then add in the old art style. Now because of this change we have to wait even longer.Mcc is getting its update, but hw2 and halo 5 have no new content being released so idk how halo fans are gonna respond to a game not being released for possibly another 2 and a half years while the current games aren’t being updated

I dont think its gonna take another 2 and a half years to create the game, the engine would have taken more time to make but I still think it’s going to be released around fall of 2019 or early 2020. Modifying a engine can go far but would need to be changed if it helps the game run better.

Well, I think it’s important to look at it from the perspective of how easy it is to make modifications to said engine. We’re talking about a hardcoded engine from the early 2000’s that has 20 years worth of outdated coding and framework in it somewhere. I imagine it throws a wrench into their workflow when they have to rework an entire part of an engine to achieve one thing. Now look to modernized game engines like Unreal Engine 4. It has such an intuitive and easy to use UI. Now that 343i has built themselves a modern engine from scratch (without relics of the past) that does whatever they need it to do they can probably build and design games at an incredibly faster pace.

Do we know that it’s from scratch? They could have just massively reworked the previous engine.

I don’t think people realize Halo has been on the same engine since Halo CE, or at least Reach. Halo 4/5 ran off a highly modified Reach engine, and I don’t think Bungie made a new one from 3-Reach.
It’s a lot easier to make a new one from scratch than it would be continuing to work with what they had

Hmm, I think I can endure that wait for the game as long they bring information now and then what’s going on.

Mcc is being update, but there isn’t gonna be new content for halo 5 or hw2.Can those appease enough of the player base for potentially 2 and a half years?

If they can get the game working again (or games really since its 4 of them technically 5 with ODST) it should keep them busy with a wide variety of games to play.

Well the old engine ran off of the Havok physics engine and most companies have policies about you rebranding their engine, no matter how much you change it. Also, I don’t see why they would make a big deal about using the same engine. For their last two games 343i gutted the old engine and replaced a ton of code without making a big deal.

I think it’s the wrong call, and it’s honestly got me worried. Halo 5 was mostly new reworked engine, and because of that, seemed to be one of the main reasons why the game had little content Day 1. And now, with this brand spanking new engine built from the ground up, it makes me believe the same thing will happen again.

I was hoping they’d improve upon Halo 5’s engine, and because of that, most of the content and especially the gametypes, would be see in Halo 6–, er, Infinite. But now I’m not too sure. I woudn’t be too surprised if we see Slayer, CTF, and Territories v76 on Day 1 and that’s it. No Infection. No King Of The Hill. No Race. No Firefight.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’d love to be wrong and pleasantly surprised to have a lot of content Day 1.

I’m glad they’ve got a new engine, Halo 5 just never ‘felt’ right to me. I could never get used to the aiming, even though I’m perfectly fine aiming in all previous Halo’s.

If a I remember correctly one of the main issues with Halo 5 was getting Warzone up and running properly. So that COULD have been a reason as to why H5 launched with major game modes missing. But hey we will never know since game development is rarely a straight line and all sorts of issues can lead you to scrap features on a moment’s notice.

A new in-house engine has several benefits. First of all, it allows you to tailor the tech to your creative needs from day 1. That gives the team greater flexibility to what can be achieved in a given development sprint. It is also a major boon for Microsoft Game Studios in general since it gives them a capable game engine that other studios can use without having to pay royalty fees (like studios using Unreal Engine or CryEngine have to do, for example).

I agree. Halo needs to breath new life and a complete face lift will help.

Could someone provide insight to “a brand new engine”. For all we know this is just a shiny badge identifying the latest iteration of the otherwise unnamed halo engine?

I agree. I also believe they are changing the engine in order to produce future games on new xbox tech and hardware. Microsoft announced their Microsoft AI for games which will probably be implemented into the new engine and whatever future software/hardware plans MS has planned. It may also allow easier development so that Halo can be on PC.

I believe it was a good call as the old engine is dated. I don’t believe it will take another two years. It looks like 343 has the art style and engine pretty much done. I am sure they have the story pretty much written as well. 343 is a large team now so I am expecting a gameplay trailer at E3 2019 and a Halo Infinite (whatever they call it) release in Fall 2019.

Watch the demo…https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us#media-ff1163c55d464ab386994046d699c9d1At 0:04 it states: “Game engine demonstration”.
And at 2:04 it states: “Powered by the Slipspace Engine”

I mean just look at the lighting, dust, water movement, fire, etc. It’s all refined and smooth.

Yeah that’s true. If I remember correctly, they did put a bunch of emphasis on Halo 5’s engine and how they changed a lot of it.

Originally everyone was spreading miss-information that it was a new engine for halo 5. But somehow, it was found to not be the case.
