It’s a fact that Halo has gotten slower both in running speed and in kill times. The population grew game by game but peaked at Halo 3. I suppose if we ignore every other factor, no matter how heavily they contribute to the statistics, we could say that Halo 3 had the right balance. Halo Reach is too slow. The majority may feel that Halo 3 was the right speed. Halo CE and 2 were a little intimidating to more casual players, especially with the button glitches and whatnot. You’d die before you knew where you were sometimes, which doesn’t appeal to the less competitive players, I expect.
Casuals aren’t the ones who die in sweet montages, they’re MLG players. Anyone can kill enough guests and first lieutenants in social slayer if they play for long enough, it’s the overkill exterminations against players who know how to play that are good to watch.
You’re not the only one who plays this game, so don’t ignore the players. Don’t ignore the fact that Reach’s population is small and just keeps getting smaller. The people don’t like this game.
Bloom and armor abilities slow down the pace of the game, even if the more skilled player still wins (even if he does win less often). This may be one of the reasons why Reach has a smaller population.
Bungie does make good changes, and they have done good things to keep it interesting. Halo 2 introduced an absolute ton of new features and mechanics not even including the addition of matchmaking and online play, Halo 3 introduced a wealth of new weapons and vehicles, and equipment which was at least bearable. Halo Reach’s additions weren’t up to scratch, and that’s the problem. Nobody minds changes, what they dislike are bad changes, and that’s what Reach brought. I’m not saying they’ve all been perfect up until now, and that Reach is pure mud; Halo 3’s random spread was awful, the floaty physics and some of the equipment were terribly detrimental to the gameplay. Reach also added some good things - Reintroducing a single-shot rifle, adding the plasma and grenade launchers, the more advanced radar system and a more detailed forge mode.
People who like Halo partly like it for the community, for playing with their friends and just goofing around in forge/customs. It’s not fun when all of your friends who used to play Halo 2 and Halo 3 are now on CoD and BF3 because they don’t like Reach. Halo needs to be good enough that lots of people play it, so people can have fun with their friends instead of having to make new Halo Reach specific friends. This was never a problem until Reach.
