I suck, what can I do to Improve?

Hey guys, I’m kinda new here to Waypoint. But I’m here for advice. I suck at multiplayer, after 5 years of Halo, I have not improved much. Lots of people tell me, “oh since you suck and can’t improve, go play campaign.” But no, I love multiplayer games and i believe Halo is the greatest multiplayer game of all time.

First of all, my aiming is ok, but what can I do to enhance it? I play tons of octagon but I usually get destroyed by better players. Honestly, I’m so bad that there is no one as bad as me to play octagon at my skill level at.

Second, my map movement is terrible. I was told to fixate on one game at a time. Learn the maps from one game at a time. I tried but no luck. Others say, experience leads to skill. I guess I have a block in my head because it hasn’t really worked after 5 years.

Last of all is my strafing. My strafe is garbage. I try crouching and everything, but whatever I do I can’t control those actions while aiming.

So there I have it. I suck. Any advice helps a ton.

My recommendation is get into a custom game, and explore the maps, learn power weapon spawns, and know when to engage, no shame in running away just to get the drop on them another time, I also would say look up some videos on youtube, you can find tons of channels that offer good advice for not only certain maps but play style

I agree with this, it’s how I learnt to get better.

Play against better people

All halo players feel this even the experienced. You’ll have to keep in mind there are people that have played the game for 10+ years and will be hard to close the gap but these are things I do to warm up before matches.

  1. I play team snipers to improve on reaction time and aiming. Team sniper is a rewarding way of more accurate and could help slightly with understanding map locations.
  2. I play against a lot of AI whether its campaign/firefight/spec ops. Believe it or not, playing those game modes will help you become a better halo player. Gets you more comfortable with reticle, timing and evasive maneuvering. Also, if anyone ever “talks down to you” about go play campaign, -Yoink- em -Yoink- fire too.
  3. Play play PLAY ranked. I know this might sound intimidating, but the best way to learn is to get your -Yoink- kicked lol. Though the ranking system isn’t terrible and should (for the most part) be matched with players along your skill set (this isn’t always the case). Most sweets are in Halo 3 but that’s where I personally spend most of my time.
  4. At the end of the day close the gap as much as possible and just get ready for Halo Infinite. While Halo vets will take some skills with them that will translate to Infinte, we will all be learning the maps and weapon locations all at the same time. So work on aiming and strafing and worry all about the rest when the new halo comes out.

Thanks! Will try all of these!

What this guy said, most of the streamers, pros use bumper jumper or recon. They are a bit fiddly to get used to but I love bumper after playing default.

Practice makes permanent. Identify the areas where you struggle and focus on doing more of that. I also find that playing against better players over time will elevate your skill level as you adapt and pick up things you otherwise wouldn’t experience with lower skilled players.

Work on your strafe and gameplay strategies. Big plays come from unexpected gameplay. Good luck my friend.

Work on strategies and team work. Watch YouTube videos on how to play halo a lot better. Witch weapons you like and what vehicles you like to be in. Not like call of duty. Every map has a strategy and every person is different. Just have to find that spot your good into. Watch some of the pro halo teams or streamers that are good at the game. may give you some pointers.

I am in the same position you are in except without the 5 year experience. All i can say is watch YouTube videos that give tips and tricks like tucking your head when running away or switch to weapon after throwing a grenade to stop the animation… etc etc

^ Dont forget to Tbag, throws em off their game if they’re the egotistical type. If they aren’t, its merely a sign of respect.

Ok don’t do this.

Just keep at it and if your not improving just work on being the objective person

We should practice together’ I suck to. I’m platinum level 1 with just over a 1 kd and 2.1 overall kda whatever that means.

Whenever anyone is new to halo and asks where to start I always recommend going into swat first. It gets you used to aiming, becoming snappy with your movement, teaches you to stick with your team and team shoot at all times and teaches you when and when not to engage the enemy team. Plus it’s super easy to get kills (one shot to the head). After that go into a custom game like others have mentioned to learn the maps, where power weapons spawn, where vantage points are, spawn points, etc. you can also go on twitch and watch streamers. People are always asking questions and you can always learn a thing or twelve from competitors too with how they play.

always remember to have fun, though.

Campaign will make you improve aim, response and even know how to handle random situations, sniper or swat gamemodes even if you suck with time you will get used to the reticle.
oh and use teammates as shield or companion while you learn so enemy don’t focus on you, works most of the time.

thats how i kinda improved, even in halo 5 that everything is fast and needs to get used to it.

Campaign is a great way to practice movement and strafing technique, but as for learning map movement, that all comes with practice. I felt the same when I first hopped into Halo 5 myself and I’ve been playing Halo for years. The best advice I can give is to just keep playing. the more you play a map, the better you get at finding hiding spots, knowing where to go after spawning for a vantage point, etc. As with anything, it’s all about practicing.

It sounds like 343 has people like you in mind with Infinite. There will be the academy and player vs bot games to get acquainted with the game mechanics and maps. I’m excited for these features as well and think that with hands on practice plus all the help that content creators will provide we have a very good time ahead of us.
