I read that halo 4 has no dedicated servers.

I saw someone say on the forums that halo 4 had no dedicated servers. Is that true? Cause if so, does that mean that we won’t be able to play during certain times of the day? Either that or i dont know what im talking about…

Halo 4 has no dedicated servers, Sparkcast 016 confirmes this.

Besides, Halo has been just fine without them, why start now?

I say it’s the latter

No Halo game has ever had dedicated servers.

Yeah, I don’t think you know how anything works.

haha no it means that the game chooses player in the game to host the server, where as other games that have dedicated servers, have specific servers reserved for the game for everyone to use

We’ve never had them but they are definitely better.
Battlefield 3 had them, Gears 3 had them, and the latter isn’t even as popular as Halo on the 360.
I think dedicated servers would be a nice touch for Microsoft’s flagship franchise, PS3 exclusives like Uncharted have them. We are paying these XBL fees for a reason right? MS should give a fraction of the billions they get from XBL fees back to their 1st party devs.

I don’t blame 343i for no dedi servers, I blame MS. It’s the publisher who makes decisions like that. Even though MS are a great publisher, they haven’t tried this online pass crap thank God.

> Yeah, I don’t think you know how anything works.

i probably dont… :c

I suggest you read about them before asking if we have them or not. It has nothing to do with time of day.

I don’t remember which interview with Frankie, but he stated that there will not be any dedicated servers at either RTX or PAX.

> I saw someone say on the forums that halo 4 had no dedicated servers. Is that true? Cause if so, does that mean that we won’t be able to play during certain times of the day? Either that or i dont know what im talking about…

Halo never had any dedicated servers.

I personally feel a game like HALO needs dedicated servers more than we realize. It usually takes more than one shot to kill someone in a HALO game which is really the only reason you need to justify HALO 4 benefiting from servers. This isnt COD where characters die like there made of paper mache. BF3 and GOW3 both benefit from having dedicated servers.

I know its not going to happen this time around but i wouldve really loved if HALO 4 did have dedicated servers. Im a huge HALO fan but im not going to sit here saying HALO’s always played perfect online when thats not the case. I personally think HALO 4 is the best FPS on consoles so thats why i want the best for HALO 4 which means dedicated servers.

Well all we can hope for now is a solid netcode i guess.

I disagree with this. Unless you mean we could have both. Dedicated servers would cause issues with w/e ranked matchmaking we’re going to have, it would cause all games to be Join in Progress. I don’t like the idea of that.

I’m sure you can disable JIP on dedicated servers. Remember they follow server rules set by the admin, in this case 343i. I’m sure 343i can just disable JIP or enable it as they please.
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure all it’s gonna do is eliminate any kind of host issues the current P2P model has.

Then would we have to wait until a full team actually joined our server to start the game? Idk, I personally see it causing more of a hastle than anything.

It would operate like the current system I presume. E.g. if you have 6 players and can’t find more, the game will throw you into a 3v3, if not, it will be a 4v4, just like Halo 3 and Reach’s MM system. Except the servers won’t be dependent on the host, meaning no host advantage and less, if any, lag.
It’s a win win to me.

Unfortunately we continue to be stuck with P2P networking.

While dedicated servers are not a panacea for all on line gaming network issues, they would be better for more people the majority of the time compared to P2P.

There would be fewer black screens for one. Halo Reach in P2P is a lagasaur.

I have 42 Mbps down, 4.12 Mbps up, ping of 20 ms, and have IP address reservation and port forwarding to XBL’s TCP & UDP ports set up for my XBox, and I get black screened all the time.

Not to mention all the lag switches the little kids like to use become useless with dedicated servers. Lag switches only work with P2P.

No, I don’t care that they would be expensive for Microsoft / 343 to set up. I’m a paying customer and want the BEST quality for my money, not just what’s “good enough.” And their bills aren’t my problem any more than mine are theirs.

Dedicated servers would be better for more people far more often than P2P. We’re only stuck without them because not having them gives Microsoft more profit margin per unit of product sold.

Yeah, black screens in EVERY game, 5-minute long host changing and lag due to a poor host being chosen because they’re “in the middle”. Worked perfectly.

Microsofts own baby and it doesn’t have it’s own servers. Did you know Gears of War has? Makes you feel small now huh.

Agreed dedicated servers would make this game play its best online and what reason/excuse could out weigh that pro? Of all the online features i think most if not all of us want the game to play its best online and that would be dedicated servers.

Just because you might not notice lag its going to be there especially without dedicated servers. To think everyone thats going to host or play this game online is going to have a great internet is naive. Also as mentioned it eliminates host advantage and i for one know REACH definitely couldve benefited from dedicated servers.

HALO 4 isnt a second rate FPS but i dont like the fact that its getting second rate service when it comes to online play.

Thanks for the explanation.
