I have recently began a run through of all of the Halo games with a friend on splitscreen. We currently just finished Halo 3. Before this, I had never really seen the appeal of splitscreen, and i never thought it was a staple of gameplay. But as we began to play, I realized that it was very fun and why people thought so highly of it. It will be a shame that it is not in Halo 5, but it is still not (in my opinion) something required to make the game great.
