Before you read this, I mean actual aim assist. Not bullet magnetism.
Aim assist in a twin stick shooter is very common. The only times I find it useful though are in GTA and CoD, since both game’s aiming schemes are built around the fact that you’ve got an auto lock on (and playing without on a controller is almost impossible, Almost).
Halo is different. It’s one of those games that I’ve hated seeing aim assist in. Not because “aim assist is for n00bs!!!11!1!1” but because aim assist literally screws up my shots.
Halo isn’t built like CoD and GTA. It’s built to have a relatively easy to use aiming scheme without lock on.
In each game though, there’s been aim assist, and it sucks. Why? Because I’ll try to go for some guy’s head, and I’ll be dragging my reticle up his body just so I can aim there. I will also be shooting someone on the enemy team, and then his teammate runs by and literally drags my aiming away from the guy I’ve been shooting at, causing me to loose my shots and get killed.
I’d love to see Halo 5 add a Aim Assist On/Off setting in the menus like CoD and GTA have.
Halo’s never had one, and it’d be real nice to turn it off. Since on the rare occasions that Aim Assist actually activates, it’s got a 99% chance to -Yoink- you up.
TL;DR
Halo’s Aim Assist has been the “Clippy” of the series. I’d like to see an option in the menus to turn it On/Off.
(BTW, I don’t know how useless Clippy was but I’ve only heard jokes.)

This has happened to me to many times in Halo. You’re shooting someone completely unaware, and his teammate runs by like the idiot he is. The guy you were just shooting immediately turns around, and you die to a 2v1. Sometimes I can polish of the weak guy, or get a lucky nade throw, but this can still be pretty annoying. Though I’m not sure how much no aim-assist would actually benefit you. It’d be fun just as an option though, but I don’t see 343 implementing this in Halo 5 at all. I doubt that it would help your aim out though, probably just screw it up. It’s called aim-assist for a reason.
You’d have to increase Bullet Magnetism to compensate for the fact that outside of 5 ft you are going to have a very hard time holding your reticle on an enemy. Without aim assist it would be impossible to hit someone when they are strafing. Joysticks aren’t as precise like a M+KB. You’d be at such a disadvantage. Aim assist is necessary for console shooters. Especially one as fast as Halo 5.
Aim Assist fudges you over 1% to 5% of the time whereas no aim assist would fudge you over completely.
One of these days some console FPS will have the option to disable aim assist and it will display how impossible no aim assist really is.

Mouse and keyboard on Xbox One would make all those Elite controllers obsolete…no chance in hell it happens

As I’ve stated, there are games that do this. Even if I end up keeping Aim Assist on, I’d like to see what Halo would be like without it.

You can. In CEA there’s the Eye Patch skull which disables aim assist. It’s not quite the same as playing against real players, but it’s quite a bit easier, so if it seems difficult, you’ll know that playing like that against real players would be even more difficult. I seriously recommend doing it. You say now that aim assist screws up your shots, but the reality is that by design you only notice its existence when it doesn’t work as expected. So for every shot it has made you miss, there are probably a hundred shots that you would’ve missed without it.
While I don’t think its necessary to remove every aspect of aim assist, as aiming against human targets would be very frustrating, the “reticle stickness” that causes you reticle to become “stuck” to an enemy player should have the option to be turned off I think.

I was thinking of doing that on my Normal run of the game. I guess I’ll check it out.

It happens but not so much that it is a problem… I can guarantee you that you wouldn’t stand a chance against people with aim assist. and you’d be forced to use 1 sensitivity.
I fully support this. I can’t stand the sensitivity changes when on and off target. I’d rather play at a single sensitivity.

I’m a broken record at this point. It doesn’t matter how much more accurate a mouse is. It doesn’t mean you need aim assist.
The only reason aim assist is needed is because the aiming controls are made bad. Halo 5’s movement isn’t anything outside of what a gamepad could keep up with.
I play without BM and AA sometimes, my 0,6 upload isnt enought for some players with great internet. Feels like H3, you need keep moving your right stick. Is a huge disadvantage with that kind of players who dont need aim.

How do you turn them off?
Also, in response to the whole thread, turning off auto aim will probably destroy your game. Listen to the wise Tsassi.

what you say is true, and i agree. often times i find my aim go from one person to another when I really don’t want it to. Glad you brought this up.
