If you played Shadow Warrior 2 you will know what I mean.
You have a hub area where you pick up mission and equipment. But than you can select you mission and it’s a big open level with a clear object but gives you reasons to explore.
The Tomb Raider reboot is also a goos example.
or It could be like ODST.
I’ll be surprised if 343 goes with the hub world option like Destiny. My guess is that Infinite’s mission progression will still be linear. The open world aspect is probably going to come from the freedom of movement, open design and large size of the levels. CE’s mission Halo is perhaps the best example of this. It’s the 2nd mission no matter what you do, but once you’re there, you can choose the order in which you rescue the squads of Marines, which helps give the level more replay value than others.

Exactly! I have always hoped 343i would look back on CE’s open ended mission design for influence. And in Silent Cartographer you could open the door before going to the cartographer.
The game doesn’t have to be open world. As long as some of the missions are more spacious and open, and possibly with non linear objectives. I’d be happy.

I would highly enjoy this
This is kinda where I imagine Halo going. Not fully open world like a Skyrim but rather semi linear, larger play areas that you can explore.
Yeah, I wouldn’t be a fan of a hub world in Halo. I think that would be a terrible decision. It would feel out of place in a campaign environment. I could see, a hub world for the multiplayer where once you get into a lobby, you’re running around with the other players in the lobby. That would be different from the thing we’ve always had in Halo which is a list of names. This is not only possible, but it hasn’t been done in any game I can think of since Mech Assault 2.

Plenty did something like that already, like PuBG, CoD WW2 or DOA4 just to name a few. It’s nice the first few times you log in, but then you realize a list does the same thing better, faster, stronger (sorry, not sorry)! I rather have a decent UI than yet another MP PvP hub world!
In SP and coop - contrary to you - I think it could work though. It’s all a matter of implementing it correctly imho! Maybe it’s our base where you can change your loadout before flying with Brohammer to your next objective, secondary mission or even repeating a ln already finished mission. The actual levels would be structured similarly to HCE, but with more reasons to explore!

No, I don’t mean quite like those other games. I mean, you’re just in a hub world in the specific game lobby and only right before the game launches. It wouldn’t actually be used for anything. You’re character would just spawn in and you could choose to interact with the other players in the lobby or just stay in list view. What I meant was specifically something like the Mech Assault 2 MP hub world. I just don’t see it working in Halo campaign.

Hmmm… I never played MA2, never realized it was that different. I guess it some kind of VR chat-esk lobby or even MMO like overworld than? Reminds me of Destiny a little bit, yet different. Personally I don’t see the appeal for that, but that might be my inner anti-social self talking!^^
Got to see a video of the game later to understand what you mean exactly, in the mean while thank you for the head’s up!

Ok, so this is not the best example, but it was the only one I found that included the pre-game lobby. You can see everyone else in the lobby before the match loads. I think it would be cool because you could check out all the other Spartans before the match loads on either team. It could spark some interesting interactions between the players.

I would love this for a PvE focused end game activity.
It would be awesome if the Infinity could be a hub world where you could gear up, customize your spartan for missions, select missions, initiate MP, etc.

I can get it for a PvE focused end game activity like this. I’ll have to think about whether or not I would like it or not.
For Infinite’s “open-world” I’m predicting it’s simply going to be a much larger and more ambitious version of ODST’s design. It would be like ODST with Halo 1 level design, where the landscapes feel very open and vast despite everything being relatively linear and still putting you on a specific path, but like ODST, it’ll be one “hub world” where you explore the ring through all these different means and sorta discover the missions in a general order, again because of that secretly linear design. Like you would be taking your own unique paths to ultimately reach the same destination every time, the way you explore the world wouldn’t have a huge impact on the story but maybe if you put the extra effort in you can get supply caches that give you vehicles, weapons, etc. (Again, me being a broken record, like in ODST) I think it will 100% be an amazing, unique and fun experience that gives a whole new level of detail and satisfaction from any other Halo campaign, but I think that it’s fair to say 343 has taken up a much more cautious and “do what the community wants” attitude ever since Halo 5. They aren’t going to do anything foreign to Halo or try to introduce new concepts again, like there definitely won’t be anything like side quests, story-impacting choices, or any of those things that tend to come with a large amount of open-world games. I think it’s going to still look, feel and play like Halo, but simply add a new level of scale to everything using concepts that already worked very well in past titles.
