I made better Controller Aiming in Infinite

I hate how the aiming in Infinite feels, it’s not too much different from other Halo games, but the thing is… the genre has evolved since Halo 3 came out, so having analog aiming that is as outdated in a new game is simply unacceptable.

I play Apex Legends a lot nowadays, and I also played a lot of Splitgate recently, both of which wipe the floor with Halo when it comes to the feel and accuracy of their analog aiming.
Apex Legends in particular also has a ton of options for you.
meanwhile Halo Infinite feels like it’s stuck in the Xbox 360 era, and missed a whole console generation of evolution when it comes to how Shooters should feel on a controller.

So I sat down, made myself familiar with the Steam controller configuration tool, and basically emulated a mouse with the right analog stick.
after some issues with the Deadzone settings on my Xbox SX controller (I literally could not adjust the deadzone… the camera drifted liek crazy, which makes no sense because this controller works fine when not trying to emulate a mouse through steam) I switched to a Dualsense, which didn’t have this weird glitch for me.

I played with my settings for about 10-15min, making myself familiar with how it feels, and I recorded it + uploaded my settings
here a video:

you can try these settings for yourself in the next flight, but you could run into the weird deadzone issue I had with my Xbox controller. which seems to be a bug in the Steam controller configuration. (i ramped up the deadzone to half the stick at one point and it still didn’t change a thing)

but even without aim assist I had no issue hitting my targets, and it felt just so much better to play.
faster max turn speed, no axial acceleration (WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE A THING IN ANY GAME), no aim acceleration in general (WHICH SHOULD ALSO NEVER BE A THING, especially if you can’t fully turn it off!! WTF?) and a way better response curve (which you can edit to your liking because steam let’s you adjust it with a slider)

343i needs to fix this until launch. because the issue we have now is that the aim assist is ridiculous, so you are almost forced to play controller, but playing controller feels awful and outdated so you want to play mouse… it’s like, no matter what you choose you get a bad deal

I watched both videos. Those settings are TERRIBLE for anyone on a controller. Like break your controller terrible. You struggled extremely hard to hit shots on a strafing target when that lowest level recruit bot actually did a left right movement. These settings may feel like you get freedom, but the moment you take those into a game you’re getting absolutely destroyed.

You need to find the right balance on a controller…to where you can hit your shots…look around good…and have a good speed for when you want to look down or up…for someone who normally struggles with aim…a low horizontal sensitivity helps with staying on target, a high vertical helps the small flick upwards for when enemies jump or if you need to look up or down for a nade bounce…and high aim acceleration to prevent your sensitivity from feeling that low while you look around the map. Your accuracy will improve much more than granting yourself all this look freedom but not being able to track left and right. You were able to aim well during moments where the bots allowed you to aim with your left stick, or if they jumped up in a straight line and that’s about it. Right stick discipline wasn’t there and it was swinging wildly in those moments where I forsee many many frustrating moments happening in MM if you use this there.

If aiming stays as it was in the preview build…I suggest really getting into the weapon drills to find a setting you feel comfortable with…and aiming for the 3 stars on weapons like the side kick, AR, and BR if possible. 2 star minimum. You don’t need to go and break the world record obviously, but I feel like thats a good gage to your settings feeling good or not. It has to be on the 3rd difficulty with strafing targets though. Hitting a stationary target or quickly swiping to it does nothing. You have to be able to maintain your shot consistently on a target thats moving left to right without feeling like you’re fighting your settings. Your missed shots should feel like your own error and the opponent just being able to make you miss while they hit their shot.

I mean, you are playing bots in this video and the lack of AA does show up when using the Commando, But you’ve obviously solved a lot of aiming issues here.

You’re completely right, the aiming, (even outside AA discussions), is completely screwed in Halo Infinite atm. If you figured out a way to disable the aim acceleration and make a linear aim response curve then 343 should literally hire you, because they obviously didn’t figure it out themselves.

Question: With this system, are you also avoiding the weird reduction in sensitivity that is applied when sprinting? To me it looks like you have the same sensitivity regardless of player movement velocity, is this the case?

Also, how dare you play with my heart and use original Halo music in this. For shame.
