I like the way they are handling eSports

They will have sponsored teams that remain static and it will be up to team management to change the roster over time. So you can support your favourite team or your favourite player. They do this in other games and it’s great as you can watch your favourite team.

It would be good if you get specific unlocks, emblems, armour coatings, weapon skins etc etc for watching the tournaments live or on a replay. Bump up player engagement and all that. I used to love watching the MLG tournaments and the top teams were pretty static which definitely helped as you had someone (or multiple teams) to route for. Think the teams should have some hype men/personalities for interviews and stuff too. Some of the top players in the world can be a bit dry sometimes. Hopefully the Halo teams have some strong characters. Commentator roster too.

Having the eSports tournaments accessible from the main menu, reminders/prompts when it is live would be really helpful.

You can get some team related items by buying them on day one too, but I’ll probably wait to see what players are like to see if any stand out first. Although with Overwatch I support the only team from the UK so maybe that will be the case with Halo as well ha.

That would be amazing. I’ve watched HCS here and there the past few years, even considered getting into pro level engagements myself but i’m pretty antisocial lol

I think UberNick was talking about something similar to this too. Having coatings and emblems for each team, so that when they compete they basically have uniforms on, and us as normal players could buy packs with the team’s stuff in them to support them and represent our favorite team! And I like your idea of having said tournaments being watchable or accessible through the main menu as well. I can’t wait to see Halo Infinite’s esports scene.

Yeah they put on the community post that is what they are definitely doing. Hopefully they are very striking skins.

Overwatch lets you get 5 points out of 200 for a team skin for one character every hour you watch the Pro League. Good way to up viewership for sponsors and stuff.

Oh that’s sick! I haven’t watched alot of HCS, but maybe for Infinite I’ll keep up with it and watch the streams and matches.

Overwatch did a great job with connecting the Overwatch League with the game. Being able to earn rewards for watching the pro league that you could tangibly see in the game itself has no doubt helped with viewership of Overwatch League. I don’t think 343 has confirmed whether the pro HCS skins for each team will only be purchasable with real money or whether there is an earnable currency for either watching or playing that you could use to buy those skins. Another great idea that Overwatch League had was to have teams be based in real life cities. I know it made it a lot easier for me to choose who to root for as I luckily had a team in my hometown. Still just having a stable roster of teams that doesn’t change every season should be good for the fan base.

They have not confirmed yet if it will just be money only. Would be good if it was obtainable through prolonged watching of many streams as that also helps generate revenue as well. The fact they are going in this direction is great for the eSports scene which I think is very promising news for the game.

Couldn’t agree more about the cities, it really helped me pick an Overwatch team. Not my city, but a city from my country. I also wouldn’t mind them having normal names and emphasising where they are from. It would be cool if they did the World Cup too, some of the best Overwatch series has come from that.

I think they’ll do a great job too. After playing Halo 5 a bunch more recently, it is a super polished game now.

Hopefully this also means that he spectator mode is top tier so they can show different angles as well as player point of views and a cool overlay to show players alive.

Same bro. It’s like the NFL and NBA. These contracted teams now solidfy the rosters that we’ll be seeing every tournament. Gives me a team to root for. Every tournament, I would have to find a team to root for. Often having to choose between my favorite players. Super glad about this. Definitely willing to spend a good $10 on my teams cosmetic items.

As long as E-sports doesn’t dictate how everything is balanced like Halo 5 did I really have no issue. The game’s focus should be on being fun instead of bending over backwards to strip functionality out of the game, because an E-sports guy doesn’t like X gameplay element.

Well, they already are keeping some elements restricted/left-out due in part to Competitive Balance <I’m sure you all know one such feature, has a few threads on it and stuff?>, but I wouldn’t bet that the ENTIRE game will be focused mostly on that. That said, we’ve only seen a very small amount of what the game has to offer so who can say…

The main problem with entire features being left out “because competitive balance!” is that these also end up affecting the non-competitive side of things too. Less options for Social Playlists, Custom Games…

Absolutely, I think they realised that was an issue and this completely solves that. Now the best players in the world still get to showcase themselves but they’ll be competing for major teams instead. I think it will bring a better atmosphere to the tournaments.

I’ll absolutely throw some money at my favourite team. Hope the skins have nice designs. Nothing worse than having a really lame skin for your favourite team. Hopefully they do it a bit like Overwatch and have home and away skins too for extra variety.

How did esports dictate everything in Halo 5 ?

I believe they had some professional Halo players inputs in actually creating the multiplayer in the first place, but main thing they may be referring to how one of the only ways to properly play Objective now is in the Ranked Team Arena playlist which uses pro settings and cuts out a lot of weapons, abilities, maps and radar functionality.

H5 multiplayer is clean. I am hungry for Infinite. Hope it’s highly competitive.

Virulent EndingI agree with faufiffon, how did it dictate everything? Can you name some specifics that were stripped out of H5 compared to H4 or past titles that occurred due to esports only?

Gunplay balance by pros had a positive impact on the weapons when comparing H5 to H4. I think general H5 gameplay was tailored more to Warzone than anything else, so I disagree with most people who say esports had a negative impact on H5

Weapons/ mechanics that were fine were adjusted to complicate their use despite that function fundamentally not being designed to be used that way. For example the assault rifle already having been weak to begin with and then being nerfed again just to give it precision damage. The damage that you get from landing headshots used to be the damage you’d have gotten for body shots. Now it’s even more of a pea shooter than before. Granted it’s not impossible to use; it’s just unnecessarily weak. I could list other weapons such as the fuel rod losing its rapid firing abilities, but you get the point.

The feedback taken for multiplayer was nearly exclusively from the “pro-team”. Whenever something popped up that they didn’t like playing against they had to power to apply pressure and nerf whatever it was with seemingly little to no questioning behind why. They’re the reason why Halo 5 devolved into such a sweatfest in every single mode.

If I understand this correctly, this means that there are teams a set number of teams and those are the only ones allowed to compete on the pro circuit?

Unconfirmed.

Well if it is anything like the MLG days you’ll have pro seeded teams then a contenders bracket. Then X amount of contenders teams will come through to play against the sponsored teams in the finals. The sponsors will have a keen eye on the talent and you’ll find the best players of contenders end up on the main pro teams over time as they get scouted.

This means there would be a chance for up and comers. Alternatively they will do two separate tournaments, contenders and pros. Contenders would be a free for all of talent to prove themselves and while the team might not be able to come through, the players can. I feel like option 1 works better as it means established teams can stay together and still do well on the tournaments.

Historically the pro teams dominate because the players are just the best naturally. The main thing is the team name won’t change, but the roster might.

It just sounds like they are going to have the “NFL” teams of Halo with owners and sponsors. Seems a little too corporate for a game, but ohh well.

Edit: I just read the article about HCS.
Sounds like they want teams that the community at large can latch onto, watch and support. Seems like a pretty good idea, but the game needs to be fun to watch, and more importantly people need to be talking about Halo. Thing is, people aren’t talking about Halo and that sucks. The multiplayer reveal from 1month ago has 1.6mil views while the Battlefield Portal revealed yesterday, has 2.2mil views. Where are the ads, the streamers, or the big reveals for the game? Where is the hype? I can tell you, I have several friends who until yesterday, didn’t even know that Halo was coming out this year, and that’s because I told them. Fact is, right now there are more people watching streams of Mario 64 than Halo. This shouldn’t be the case, people should be playing Halo right now getting ready for Infinite.

I don’t think it can be stated how much I want Halo to be “the” game to play, but content needs to be in front of people, it needs to be what they see, and it needs to be what they are talking about.
