(This is just a rant that has been on my mind. I am kind of hoping the thread dies quickly. I just want to throw it out there.)
Ultimately, I miss just having a long-term goal. Of course, I play just for fun - especially the CGB which has no rewards at all. However, it has been harder to play matchmaking for itself ever since all of my friends have given up on the franchise. I think having a long-term goal certainly helps with the “just one more game” mentality.
From Halo 3 to 5 and MCC I enjoyed going for the 100% armory completion. It’s like Halo’s equivalent to CoD’s camo grind for me.
It is what motivated me to be excited about armor I was not even going to wear. Now that it is gone, I cannot seem to care about any new cosmetics at all. I cannot care for events or bother to buy any BP or bundle. I don’t like collecting for the sake of collecting, I like collecting for the sake of completion. So all of this advertising for new armor or other cosmetics do not interest me at all. Contrast that with Halo 5 and MCC where I was actually excited for the new content because I knew I could work for them.
I believe this is why people hate the store so much. Sure, games like Valorant have worse stores, but Halo fans seem to hate Infinite’s store more because it took away our ability to earn rewards that we enjoyed so much (more or less) from previous games. MWII has a similar store, (overpriced, cannot buy individual items, seemingly random rotations for the sake of FOMO, etc.), but its forms and subreddit are not flooded with posts like this one because it is all new content. No one took away the camo grind every CoD is known for.
It does have its advantages through. I have an appearance I am satisfied with, so I never have to worry about buying any bundle or BP ever again for the rest of the game’s supposed 10-year life – which is kind of nice.
However, I also firmly believe the lack of a long-term goals is a major cause for driving the population away. Why play Halo when I need to get the Orion skin in MWII? Again, I do play for the sake of the game itself, but a mainstream casual audience does not do that. The competition in the FPS market is just too rewarding for people to want to play Infinite over anything else. I just find it ironic that they went F2P to attract new players, but did not come up with a long-term system to keep those new players. Instead, they got rid of the long-term goals previous games had to sell what would have been rewards in the store because they are now a F2P game. It just comes full circle.
Oh well. Hope they get it right next time!
What about you? Do you miss this grind or have you never really cared for it?
