There are many things I hope Halo 6 improves on where Halo 5 failed. However, the one that really hits home with me is Spartan Customization, which has been absolutely ruined in Halo 5 in so many ways. So, I’m going to break it down into three parts: The problem with the current armor pieces, the problem with how we’re restricted, and the problem with how we obtain it.
First, the problem with the armor pieces. To be frank, the selection of armor in this game is atrocious. There are way too many armor pieces that are simply re-skins, and so way too many trash armors (Along with reskins for them, too) that are meant to be nothing more than filler. Why do we have 4+ variants of the same armor? Who thought the Seeker helmet was a good idea? Why do we have reskins of Seeker? Why do some armor pieces look the exact same, despite different names and rarities? For Halo 6, they need to slim down the vast number of armors and helmets. Cut out the fluff helmets, the worthless reskins, etc. The art style isn’t helping, either.
Second, the problem with how we’re restricted. In previous Halo games, we could customize our Helmet, Helmet Attachments, Visor Color, Chest Piece, Left Shoulder, Right Shoulder, Forearms, Wrist Attachment, Knee Pads, Legs, etc. All with a vast selection of Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary armor colors. Now, we’re restricted to our Helmet, Visor Color, and the rest all thrown into one. It’s awful. Now to mention that with so many armor pieces, and the game’s terrible User Interface, it takes forever to hunt down and choose what you actually want to wear. In Halo 6, we should have complete control over every aspect of how our Spartan looks.
Lastly, and probably the biggest problem, is how we obtain armor. In Halo 3, we got our armor through achievements. In Reach, we used our Exp as Credits to buy the armor we want once we’ve hit the required rank for it. In Halo 4, we unlocked them through commendations. What do these three have in common? We can see the armor piece we want, and we know how to obtain it. How to grind for it. How to earn it. Now, we need to get lucky through RNG loot boxes. Why? Because of disgusting greed in the AAA gaming industry. To put it into perspective, with each RNG Loot Box “Req Pack”, we obtain two permanent unlocks, which means you have two chances to get what you want. However, there is way too many things fighting for that same spot:
- 238 Helmets - 229 Armors - 63 Visors - 305 Emblems - 27 Stances - 30 Assassinations - 140 Weapon Skins - 28 Assault Rifle variations - 36 Battle Rifle variations - 28 DMR variations - 4 Magnum variations - 27 SMG variations - 14 Armor Mods - 99 Power Weapon certifications - 75 Vehicle certifications - 12 Powerup certificationsAdd it all together, and you have a 1/1425 chance of getting what you want in one of those slots. And since they are part of Microtransactions, they are designed for you to get frustrated and buy more in hopes of obtaining what you want sooner. So, if you were to make a brand new account and buy your way to everything. It would take around 713 Gold loot boxes to get everything. The best deal on Gold packs is $54.99 for 47 Gold packs. So, you would need to spend around $835 to unlock everything, which is absolutely disgusting. However, they are available in-game for 10000 Req Points, so if you really want everything without wanting to spend any extra cash, it’ll cost you 7,130,000 REQ points to unlock everything. This should be illegal.
Please, 343, in Halo 6, don’t let greed take over. Give us meaningful armor and ways to get them.
