What if the 2013 E3 trailer is post Halo 5? We see John on what is suspected the Ark, and he walks as if he is searching for something. Maybe he is searching for a Guardian which contains Mendicant Bias, because he needs his help to stop Cortana. He grasps his AI chip as if he knows what he needs to do; capture her. He also has the cracked visor from the fight with Locke.
Just a theory that makes sense to me. Discuss.
That… actually does make a lot of sense.
That would be cool. However, then we have a case of “Bungitis”, where the devs plan to have something in the game and decide to leave it out for something else.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing if it makes sense for the story.
Plausible, my take on it is it takes place near or at the end of the campaign.
Early on in the campaign she baits him in the vision with her AI chip, as if she knew that’s what he is looking for. IMO he wants her back in his suit/head where he knows she is safe and that is all he wants, the one and only personal mission that he cares about. Maybe she’s even using his feelings for her as a tool to subliminally steer his actions to benefit her plans?
This is plausible. The only thing I can think of is that 343i may not be that advanced in planning ahead. It’s clear that Halo 5 is a tweener game, and I am hoping Locke does not stay on as the protagonist, but this theory is very interesting.

I like Locke as a character, and as much as I love John, his story will end
