It has to do with the Flood. Are Graveminds the mutated Precursors or are they every form. I’m a bit confused on the situation.
The Flood are a mutated form of Precursor. The Precursors were said to come in many different forms and it would seem the Flood is just a newer form. The Gravemind in Silentium said they were now Legion so he may see himself as all the old Precursors now formed into the Flood.
The Primordial was a Precursor (Silentium pages 182-183) that mutated into a Gravemind.
Graveminds are a gathering of Flood intelligence and mass into a gigantic hive-mind.
The Flood is mutated Precursor DNA gone wrong.
I read the book, it was just a bit confusing on which stage of the Flood the Precursors are.

Technically higher than the beastiarium lists, as space/slipspace infection an precursor technology manipulation isn’t covered.
The Gravemind we encounter in H2/3 is simply flood forms; i.e. there is no “actual” Precursor in the Gravemind. However, the Flood is made up of a dust that is part of Precursor DNA, so technically, the Flood are Precursors, but not actually full-form living breathing Precursors. It’s pretty confusing.
I always wondered cause this is an idea, the Precursor DNA/dust that transpires into the flood after humans experimented on it; what if the flood grave minds when enough biomass has been collected, it returns to a precursor form, thus completing the cycle.
