Can someone explain exactly how they work? I set up some challenges, completed them, and when i turned them in, i didnt see it register anywhere. Is there a certain amount of time i have to wait for them to show up? Or am i doing it wrong?
After you complete the custom challenges, the credits won’t show up normally. Try this way: Set up a 20k custom challenges, complete them and turn in. If you have 20k cR in your account, minutes later you will have 40k cR.

Yes you have to make sure you “Turn In” your Custom Challenges in order to get the credits for them, and you won’t see it immediately reflected in-game - however it usually only takes a few minutes (despite the pop up that says they won’t be scored until the time period has expired).
And there is no indication or visual reflection of Custom Challenges anywhere in the game, if that’s what you’re looking for. The best way to see your progress without quitting Reach is to use the Halo Waypoint mobile app. I use my iPhone to track/create/complete Custom Challenges.
