I Hate The Challenge System

That’s it really. It’s plain and simple, there I’m the title.

I hate having to complete challenges to progress in any battle pass or event to earn rewards.

Why? Because it makes playing the game a chore by doing things I don’t want to, rather than being fun by doing the things I want to do.

You can level up the battle pass just by playing any match, including vs bot matches too you know. Hell, first handful of matches will level you up evennonce a day, then every match afterwards will do 50 xp.

You can hit 100 on the battle pass just by doing that, and play the way you want too to boot.

I don’t hate it but I definitely don’t like it either.

I know what you’re saying, some challenges are just dumb but oddly enough the challenge system gets me to leave my comfort zone. I would never play a game mode like Last Spartan Standing (or any Free For All mode), however with the event this week I played it, and I had fun winning a bunch of LSS matches.

I only played yesterday this week and I was able to do all the weekly challenges (and I don’t buy the battle pass so I can only go for 3 at a time). Just remember you can play the game any way you want to, you don’t have to do the challenges (all you get are cosmetics and let’s be honest 90% of them you won’t even use). I don’t mind adapting my game to complete different challenges so I guess there’s a silver lining to it.

Save your challenge swaps for the really obnoxious ones (like kill 10 players defending their zone for example).

I’m a bit indifferent on them. What I hate are these timed event garbage things! Especially when they said they weren’t going to do this.

I haven’t been able to play for more than an hour and the last week plus and it’s going to stay that way for another few weeks due to work. Yet I’m going to miss all this gear. Yeah I know they give you other chances to get it but that’s not the point. I just hate these timed exclusive events!

The challenge system itself is passable, but it simply isn’t sufficient to replace a real progression system. The weaknesses of its design come out in full force when it tries, as you’ve seen.

The challenge system makes this game feel like it was designed to make you hate it.

Dont do them then, you get 1k xp a day free from just playing a few matches. Pretend the challenges arent there.

you need to for limited event gear, whether weekly challenge or limited game mode. It’s annoying. Cosmetics do matter in a halo game. It’s what sets it apart, no matter how big or small some may view them.

The last thing I wanna do after grinding out 50 LSS kills is play more Halo, but atleast I get the stupid helmet. Definitely something to be said for people that like unlocking stuff in a videogame and finding it enjoyable.

What progression system though. Halo games dont have progression. Nothing you earn affects the gameplay which is the definition of progression. You want shinys and flex material.

MCC has a decent challenge system, why can’t Infinite’s be more like that one? People like having tasks to work towards and be rewarded for. But Infinite’s are genuinely painful especially because of the RNG of match types + challenge specificity.

This weeks challenges were some of the easiest. I was done them by Thursday night playing maybe 3h a night. I do agree that some weeks are harder but IMO the hardest ones were early on in season 1, theyve learned and have made them easier to complete since then.

The RNG of game modes is a big issue but the reason why that route might be problematic is it will severely limit your player pool for those modes.

Especially with a barebone game. It’s the main reason why the BP is so poorly designed, and why I will never buy one.

Exactly, I don’t see why these limited event game modes are limited when the game itself already is starved for ‘stuff to do’.

I’m fine with challenges for the main battle pass to an extent. It has to be optional though. I hate playing during events because you have to play whatever mode they decided to tie to the event because that’s where the challenges are. This last one was rough because Last Man Standing is the saddest excuse of a Battle Royale/Gun Game mode I have ever played. I would have much rather played Hyperscape or Spellbreak. If you’ve never heard of those, its because they are dead games that nobody played. I binge played the event in 3 days because I wanted to be able to enjoy the rest of my week.

The only event I’ve enjoyed playing in Infinite was the Christmas one because all you had to do was play once a day to earn your rewards. Maybe don’t do that for every event, but something similar, like play x amount of matches of any game mode instead of “Get 10 behind the back kills with a melee in Last Man Standing”. The multiplayer would be ten times better if the challenges weren’t so bad, I guarantee it. The gameplay is fun in all the other modes (my favorite being Big Team Battle), but the challenges take that away.

Note: A little tip for completing the Last Man Standing challenges, just change the last four to “Play X Last Man Standing matches.” That’s how I was able to complete the event pass over the weekend.

I prefer the system used in the MCC. There are incentives for PVP and PVE play and reward points for unlocking customization items and match points to level up your shield. I think that what is missing is all challenges are solely for PVP and do not reward regular gameplay. Wish that was included too. During the lull between seasons 1 and 2, I have been playing Destiny 2. Love the reward system and multiple ways you can gain customization items.

I dipped my toe into the Last Man standing event and will try again once the week’s challenges reset. I dislike the event challenges and really the regular weekly challenges system in general. Again refer back to the MCC and its methods of rewarding game play.

Hey, pipe down with that ad hominem nonsense on that last part. I’m talking about things like per-match XP based on performance with some sort of account level indicator, I have no idea where you got “shinys and flex material” from.

When I first learned there was “RNG” tied to the BP’s, I started actually laughing because that’s how bad it is.

That only works for the main battlepass, but for event passes, and weekly ultimates you are entirely at the mercy of randomly selected challenges. Either being directed to play modes you don’t want to, or playing in a particular way you don’t feel like, etc ruins the experience.
