I’m a longtime Halo player, having played years of Halo 3, Reach, Halo 4 and now Halo 5 since launch. I’m around rank 96 in Halo 5.
I’d been playing less Halo 5 in recent weeks because of playing new games like Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, etc.
I’ve been coming back to Halo 5 a little bit lately and I’ve been getting destroyed in Arena Slayer. The other teams are just unusually good. Their trigger fingers with the BR and Carbine are crazy, they crouch and hide, they’re fast, it’s just tough. It feels like an MLG tournament.
Does the matchmaking system match me with other high-ranking players, I’m assuming? If so, I don’t get how my team is never very good but the other team is.
I’m just looking for casual, fun Halo, not something stressful.
Any thoughts or advice?

I’m struggling at the moment as well.
This may be of use to you.
You know, maybe it’s possible that enough players have left to go play the new Fall shooters that only the Halo 5 diehards are left and that’s why matchmaking is so hard all of a sudden.
I recommend checking out “Luke TheNotable” on YouTube. Here gives tips on how to get better at Halo 5, including coming back to Halo 5 after a few weeks or so of not playing.
It’s two factors really… #1 Halo is a hard game so when you stop and play easier games you are going to get a bit rusty. #2 as Daftlink pointed out as the game ages and other games releases and players leave it’s more of just the “diehards” left. I remember revisiting H3 late in H4s life and figured why not check it out… well I looked at a couple player profiles and they had well over 20,000 games played needless to say the match didn’t end well for me.

I find this very true. I start playing TitanFall 2 and have a grand old time, winning, and advancing quickly (I think my brain is damage in a special way that makes me play it better). I came to back to Halo after a few weekends and found I profoundly sucked. Had to readjust and relearn my skillset for the way that Halo is played.
You learned the hard way that, halo players tend to dominate at other fps when we play them and , when you go from another fps to halo you get stomped.
Build you skills back up in halo, out play the mlg in titanfall, then maintain in halo.
You could look for a Spartan company to team up with.
I always find I play alot better after playing some campaign on Solo legendary. Like a few weeks back, I took a small break from Halo, thanks to Skyrim coming out and I was getting blown out the water no matter what I did. So, I went away did a few missions on legendary on Reach. Came back and I was playing better than ever.

Try changing the search preference for arena matchmaking to “focused” . This is will make sure the players being matched with you in arena are of similar skill.
You can find the search preference option in the arena menu just above the actual playlists themselves. Happy hunting!

Yes: don’t play ranked playlists. Halo 5 was and continues to be marketed as a game for the professional crowd. The ranked playlists, especially Team Arena and Team Slayer, and going to really promote the competitive qualities of the game and players.
If you want to have a less stressful time, play more casually, then stick to the social playlists. You’ll still occasionally encounter “tryhards” and “sweaties” in the social playlists (because stat tracking is global and people can pad stats in social games), but it will be less stressful than ranked Arena. Warzone is also a mixed bag because, while it is inherently less balanced than Arena, at this stage in Halo 5’s life you mostly see incredibly coordinated teams in Warzone that use efficient tactics and powerful REQs to quickly win games or sometimes farm.
Action Sack, Super Fiesta, Infection, and Grifball are probably your best bets for casual play.

Yes, it does. If you solo queue in ranked playlists, you open yourself up to the possibility of getting matched against more coordinated parties/teams. If you feel matchmaking in ranked playlists has been stacked against you, consider going into ranked matches with premade fireteams of friends or a Spartan Co.
Since all these new games have released, most players have gone to play other games. Only ones who still play are the new comers (the few) and the Veterans of H5. since you just came back, you should get ranked first. complete the 10 games and its going to pair you with your skill level. for before you start the playlist, make sure you have the search under Balanced. that’ll find people with your rank or your skill. Time periods effect too. i love playing the early morning PST time zone cause i get to play Onyx and Champs most times. even though I’m Diamond. but my skill level is higher, i just ranked down cause i got a new tv, sensitivity was off and bad teammates :(. so i play with my group and we play higher rankers. Find a company that enjoys fun and not competition. That’ll help too.
A full team of good people will have the advantage over a team of good randoms
You should try MCC, more casual than H5
I certainly don’t have any advice for how to get better OP but I can just offer a sympathetic ear and say I know what you mean, I’ve never been good at this game but good cripes according to the ranking system all I’ve done is get worse and not better the more I play. When the game dropped I was able to hang with Golds and now I’m no joke losing to Bronze, and I’m sure they can’t all be smurfs.
I hate to have an attitude of giving up but, I’m taking that as a sign that it’s time to move on to other stuff. Stick to social playlists/Warzone and/or switch to other games. (Including other Halo games - Reach is lovely this time of year. And MCC works most of the time for me now.)
