I have to say first and foremost that 343i did a remarkable job with Chief’s new retro armor. Some say it looks cartoonish, but I say it looks perfect the way it is done as of now; there are no major/small details that bother me too much. I may contradict myself, but trust me I really think the current armor doesn’t really need massive changes IMO. But if I was the lead designer and I had to make a last and crucial decision choice to make it more than perfect, I think applying these small changes would please a lot of people:
You also changed the pilot’s smile into a grimace. He is clearly upset with your changes.
Joking aside, I suppose the new version looks more like the Halo 2/3 armor, but since the armor in this game is apparently supposed to be MJOLNIR Gen III, I guess it’s okay for it to not be 100% like the older armor. You did a good job, though.

Thanks! and I concur
Yeah, I just realized I really made it look like Halo 3 haha. Shoulders on my edit should be a bit more wider
The darker green color looks sooo much better. It also looks more battle worn, which makes me hope someone at 343 looked at your design and is seriously considering making that adjustment. I honestly love the new Gen 3 armor look, but the bright color kinda threw me off a bit.
I’m actually really digging the bulk and new green, it feels nostalgic but fresh, a perfect balance. Your version, while still looks great, is a little too much on the nostalgic side. His new look gives him a familiar yet new identity to me.
I prefer your version because the shade of his armour feels more realistic. I think the colour of Chief’s armour is more so why people think it looks cartoonish, rather than the armour itself. Which has actually been growing on me.

When watching the trailer, I didn’t have any issues with the armor. In fact, I (as were most others) was reminded of a Mk IV vibe with more of a Mk VI helmet. The colors didn’t stick out to me as too bright. The only thing that stood out independently was that Chief’s hands/forearms looked thicker, but I didn’t have a problem with that either.
Looking at the original to the edited, here are my own thoughts:
Color desaturation actually helps, even if like the OP I didn’t have any issue with the original. - I actually prefer the original shoulder armor. Especially after the H4/5 design, I always thought the Bungie-era Mk VI was too lanky looking/not wide and massive enough. The Infinite armor checks that box for me nicely. - I prefer no 117, but if they’re actually explaining this canonically as the actual version armor he wore, say, in Legends and FUD, I’m more than fine with them keeping it there. All of this being said, if they do nothing to the armor between now and next holiday with Chief’s design, I’m still an extremely happy Halo fan.
