I figured out the problem with Halo Infinite's Story and Campaign. Nothing Felt ICONIC

I think level select would matter because I would like to redo some of the missions with my gear. Plus some of the more cinematic and character driven pieces are there. Redoing the campaign is a tall order to get to these otherwise.

Plus I kind of feel each save is like an MMO character. So I am reluctant to create too many of them as I worry about losing my progress if that makes sense.

I already did. I stated my thoughts on what 343i had in plan, what the idea of the House of Reckoning was, and even agreed some moments don’t the campaign were bad for the sake of fixing Halo 5’s story?

All you did was state everything you dislike about the game and ended each fo those sentences with “not interesting/different”. You on the other hand, have not explained any good arguments besides your opinion.

It was definitely an iconic moment. Nothing about the game explains why a one man army is able to plow through an army of aliens until Halo 4’s intro cutscene with Halsey. You can only find out that he was a trained super-soldier since a child in the books lore.

So why you want to nitpick what you find iconic and make a contradicting excuse behind it? Never to say, can’t admit good writing without adding “exceptionally” at the end. Just admit its good without being arrogant.

I just reread all his post. He just tells me how getting to each point was boring and all the encounters were bland. Which really is, a personal perspective depending on how you play the game. He didn’t make any points. He was just finding a way to be negative about it.

Lol really? Mass Effect is more cinematic than Halo?

Hey you said cinematic not me.

Although almost any first party Sony exclusive, from the last 15 years, will beat any Halo in terms of cinematic presentation and storytelling.

Cant know if something is iconic until years after the fact

I feel this grossly oversimplifies the issues with Halo Infinite’s narrative.

I tend to agree with the OP. None of the missions stood out to me. There was no AotCR, Delta Halo, or The Covenant.

To me, it comes down to Infinite’s open world structure, which forced all the main story beats to take place in repetitive interiors. None of the main missions take place outdoors with the exception of the Scorpion section. Most of Halo’s best missions have both interior and exterior sections, forcing most of the vehicle moments to take place in the open world, and the main missions inside buildings, was a mistake.

100% agreed. I’ve said this here before, but I haven’t even finished Infinite’s campaign because it is THAT boring, rinse and repeat bull crap where most of the story is told through audio logs. The only other Halo I wasn’t able to finish right away was 5, but I got through it like 6 months after I started, lol. Infinite’s campaign is lackluster, the open-world just doesn’t work, it’s all so meaningless and empty. So far there hasn’t been one epic moment in the campaign, nothing that has made me say ‘wow’, just blah blah blah. The gameplay is solid but that has never been an issue for 343 thb. The game is so unbelievably underwhelming.

You are 100% correct

The world structure needs to combine open world sections with linear sections. Borderlands, Fallout and Destiny are good examples.

And there needs to be specific intent, purpose and “wow moments” that are based on top tier sc fi writing principles.

A good Example is the 2007 trailer for Halo 3 with the bubble shield, where he rushes the tanks, slamming the bubble shield down for defense in an open, dusty plane. There should be a section where you have to assault a large group of banished tanks and race between points of cover, picking up bubble shields along the way with an awesome 3rd person animation for it. and the sequence where you jump in the midst of banished troops, with the ability to kick them in the chest, impale them with the grappling hook, and have a throwable melee weapon, melee combos, ability to use your combat knife to gut banished foes, dodge their attacks like with the dive/roll from Reach and 3rd person Assasinations on brute troops.

The combat should feel more visceral and Brutal.

They should also add a feature where a double tap of the shoulder button does a quick 90 degree turn and double tap of both bumpers does a fast 180 degree turn, at least for campaign mode, AND re-add the duck and roll by double tapping the B button.

I want to feel like a Spartan with enhanced agility.

The problem with infinite’s story is a bit more simple. It is just plain bad and lazy. Period.

LOL this guy literally just wrote like 450 character essay explaining how and why Halo campaigns were always interesting. Maybe it’s not interesting to you which is your opinion but objectively Halo CE was built in a way that made the player very interested and wanting more. Crysis 1 is good comparison

The Act Man’s review of Infinite is on point to what you’re talking about. It’s like an hr long video but does a great job of verbalizing positives and negatives and why its not ‘iconic’ as you say.

That’s good to know. I’ll have to check that out. I like deep dives into storytelling analysis

I’m a little concerned that you consider 450 words to be an essay. I did read it and I myself found absolutely none of that remotely memorable. B movie tier sci-fi cringe with, best in the industry, gunplay and music.

The issues with the Infinite story that a lot of people seem to have, to me, extends to the whole franchise. It’s just an opinion. Naturally people on a Halo forum aren’t going to agree with me.

The House of Reckoning is bland because it’s large Banished rooms with UNSC training structures and equipment.
In Infinite, the Banished already have a simple aesthetic which isn’t much different from what you’d expect to see from human designs.

While it’s described as being an arena they send the UNSC to fight in, there is no blood, no Marines, etc.
Even if there were however, it wouldn’t make the layout very interesting since it’s so simple.
It looks like something basic someone would make in Foundry.

The waves aren’t interesting because it’s more of the same, but near the end of the campaign.
Instead of adding something like platforms to battle on, or some enemies or areas you have to avoid, they just throw a lot of enemies at you.

With free roaming, the biomes were limited to marshes and meadows (I think that’s the right term).
There were no snow-covered mountains or other snowy areas, no desert areas, no beaches, no deep lakes, no forests, etc.
There were also no large animals, no new (not just modified) vehicles to use, few encounters with unusual occurrences, and few things to do that have an effect on the gameplay.

The campaign has very few events with action.
Most of the cutscenes are of Master Chief talking to the Weapon and Echo 216, and Escharum talking to his allies or Master Chief.
Outside of the cutscenes there’s often not much going on that’s story-related other than Master Chief seeing Cortana.

I can see three things that could have been more iconic :

  • The destruction of the Infinity, but we only see it in a small cinematic, it would have be more interessant to fight the Banished in a real mission and lose the battle ourself
  • Atriox’s victory over Master Chief, but the fight was so bad, Atriox attacked him by surprise and chief defended himself like a poor soldier with no experience, this was non sens !
  • The weapon is a good character, it’s just too bad she’s just a copy of Cortana
