Let’s say Halo 4 releases and does pretty good sales. Maybe not to the point of Call of Duty, but damn near close. However, let’s say like Call of Duty it maybe gets a season or two on the circuit before it’s cut…or even worse for the competitive community…it doesn’t get picked up at all because of the impending costs and main e-Sports part missing: spectator mode. What should we do as a community then? I feel like this is a fair question, because even though Halo is the bread and butter that helped make MLG, it’s obvious if it is too much of a loss on the MLG side, which is pretty much fair to say with a lack of spectator mode…what should we do…on terms of high level competitive atmosphere competitions. It’s not like we are fighting games that have their grassroots organizations all over the world…so…not saying we can’t have that but yeah…
The competitive community needs a spectator mode if it wants to survive. It’s really as simple as that. The cost to set up and stream a Halo tournament is greater than any other game because it lacks the spectator function. Every game on the MLG circuit right now has a spectator function or doesn’t require a spectator function (Fighting Games).
What should we do if MLG doesn’t pick up Halo 4 or Drops it after a season?
Stop caring about MLG.
MLG is fun to watch but Its not like 343 is gonna jump through hoops just for it
I don’t see how mlg matters that much to any game whatsoever. It’s about a bunch of people who are good at playing a game who manage to earn a lot of money from doing so. How does this affect me or my friends? It doesn’t.
Alright, but let’s say BLOPS2 gets a Spectator mode and is chosen for IPL of Halo 4. Let’s say MLG doesn’t pick up Halo 4 either due to that either. At E3, 343i brought in a ton of professional Halo players for the game for the reason of making it viable on the competitive aspect. I’m not saying you are wrong to not care about MLG…however, does that mean 343i should not do something about it?
It’s a trend that I feel like they need to get with…and it’s only their fault if they know it’s needed and don’t implement it. I feel like if there were more technical issues then “we don’t want to do it because it takes up too much bandwidth”…but I feel that’s a sorry -Yoink- excuse.
I’m not saying it affects everyone. Just like not everyone at League of Legends is a pro or even can play at that level. But due to spectator mode, it makes it easier to watch and fun to do so, to learn to get better. That’s how the community has always worked. Back in Halo 3, people would watch matches of pro’s to learn tactics and skills. I feel like that’s how a community becomes full circle. A skill curve doesn’t hurt, infact I feel it’s needed for the game but they need to help it out.
Without a spectator mode, It is clear that Halo 4 will go the same way of Reach (competetivley) and will go off the circuit.
For the vast majority of Halo fans, this means nothing at all.
But it will more than likely cripple the competitive Halo scene.

You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if 343i (and Bungie before them) are only putting up with MLG because Microsoft is forcing them to for advertisement.
Neo, I feel like you’re saying that MLG is a bad thing. MLG helped propel the gaming community of Halo 2 and 3 to new heights and added, as well as supported the best players for a long time even when it did not turn a profit for years on end.

It’s not wise to talk about MLG on these forums. Check out The Halo Council forums if you want. Most of the MLG community shifted there after Reach was dropped.
plays for fun I could care less about what happen to some lame untalented person without a real job who happens to Pwn N00bs at halo cant get money "oh boo hoo no spectator mode I cant make money by just winning a match on halo not even having interesting commentary or do interesting things with halo and other games like roosterteeh wahhh wahhh E sports is serius buiznezz wahhh.
Are you saying competitive players don’t play for fun? The ignorance in your post shows me that the skill curve is definitely not in your favor, or ever has been. Like I gave in my prior example, League of Legends, a game that caters to casuals and competitive audience, splits the player list and all that.
I honestly do not see how adding a viable ranking system, spectator mode and balanced maps for competitive play HURT the casual audience. Halo 3 sold over 10 million copies, had a long-standing casual audience, with competitive play types and a good ranking system. Did that stop you from playing? No.
But then again, your argument isn’t cute, funny, thought out or cool. You just come off like a -Yoink!-, which I guess was your point to begin with? Yeah, guess so.

lolwut?
It’s always something with you people.
Since E3 and the announcement of the lack of a spectator mode there has been a lot of moaning and groaning going on. I’m sure 343i has gotten wind of this. Hopefully there will be one post launch in an update.

Other way around. Halo’s popularity made MLG, MLG didn’t make Halo popular.
I didn’t say Halo came out and wasn’t popular. But it would be ignorant to say MLG did not help propel that. Halo 2 sold 8.5 million units. Obviously that’s when MLG first picked up Halo and helped it out. Halo 3 alone sold 11.5 million units, over 17 million units combined with Halo 3: ODST. It would be ignorant to say that MLG did not help that a little bit.
removing spectator mode was a very poor decision on 343’s part, even though it was a bandwidth hog thats still not a good enough reason why it couldn’t of had one in LAN games.
I can’t say I care about MLG at all. At least when it comes to what happens to Halo. As long as they keep making the games, which they will if it is part of MLG or not, I will keep buying and playing them.

everyone plays for fun. fun is subjective and different for everyone. there is no right or wrong for fun. chances are that “untalented person” can probably beat you at halo. he could probably have a “real” job if he wanted it. But i really doubt if you had a chance to make steady income playing video games that you would turn it away.

Okay, I’m trying to stay off of waypoint at the moment, but I saw this and…
So because we are competitve we don’t play for fun? Because we are competitve we are untalanted and have no job?
Dear god man, HOW DOES THIS EVEN AFFECT YOU? It has nothing to do with you, and would actually advance the game! Why come here and attack for no given reason because we like something that maybe you don’t?
WTF Dude? Seriously, WTF?
Honestly, the maturity and decency for humanity in your post is stupid lacking. Why should regular sports be more important than E-sports? What the hell is the difference of someone being good at soccer, and someone being good at halo? You are basically insulting any sports player!
Have some common decency because these people have a different veiw on gaming than you do, I mean, c’mon. I as a person find it impossible to do something without trying to win, that makes me a no lifer?
Jesus man, what the hell.
Good bye waypoint.
I don’t think it will matter either way. MLG is pretty much done with console games. The money is in Starcraft and that’s why that is their main game now. The focus started to change little by little even when H3 was still on the circuit towards the end. It’s only about money though.
The cost to stream the game due to there being no spectator mode is irrelevant. A multi-viewer box capable of multiple inputs that outputs to HD would be the only cost to the company to stream Halo - which they already own, as they’ve streamed previous Halos.
It’s not about the cost of putting the console games on, that’s an excuse imo, it’s about viewers. With Starcraft the viewer numbers keep rising, records keep getting broken for viewers etc. It would be foolish of them as a company to change direction. More likely is they would add more Starcraft streams than adding console games.
