I entered this in an Australian short film comp

Hey all,

I recently entered a short film comp in Australia and placed finalist! The machinima I made can be watched here. It’s not the best, but I can only get better from here, so buckle in.

On a side note, it’s funny thinking I made it all the way to finals with someone else’s music, models, animations, video effects and sound effects. The only thing I did was the questionable voice over and then sequenced it all (which is admittedly very important, as these things are more than a sum of their parts).

Still, I figure some of you can get a laugh out of it, and some still may understand the story beyond the surface.

Enjoy!

Love it Spartan! Although I didn’t quite get it.

Yeah, the theme was mystery, and, whilst I tried to fulfill that theme, I sorta got carried away and didn’t have time to redo it.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, though!

Wow I really liked it! The whole vibe from the start, the buildup…it was awesome! I hope you keep making more!

The setting as well as the mood were definitely things I liked. The AI voice however I thought was a little weird mixing wise as I felt at times he was speaking away from the mic which made him a little indecipherable at times.

I was curious how that flickering effect was done in the chess board room? Is this a forge effect?

Thanks! I don’t think I’ll ever do anything on this timeline (although I might do an alternate run), I do plan on continuing the practice.

Which A.I.? The initial one or the voice that was shared by the White Spartan? It’s been a while since I actually made this (comp as early September), but I believe the first one was barely touched - a slight echo, perhaps. The second wasn’t touched at all beyond audio cleaning/compressor and the usual mixing stuff. However, that was my voice heavily modified manually (I can do it in conversation without a computer), so that might be it. Also, my mix practice is generally pretty bad. I’ve got to work on it.

As to the flickering, that I do remember. Build big room on forge. Put a grid in the middle. Place a few lights on the ceiling. Tamper with settings till they reach the ground well. Set them to cyan, set the cookie or the filter or something to that effect to “Data Stream” (there’ll be a lot of options under this setting that change how the light looks. You’ll know what I mean when you see it). I then touched up the colour/glowing in Sony Vegas and added my own bloom to everything. Scene complete.

I hope that’s of some help. If it isn’t, I’ll try to work out how to send you the map - it should still be here, somewhere.
