Every argument I have seen always ends in “Oh you just want Halo 2 and 3 rehashed. You don’t want Halo to evolve, to advance, to catch up with the gaming industry.” That’s not true at all. I want something new, but I don’t want to play something that’s trying to be its own thing when it’s really trying to imitate 4 or 5 things. Sure, it has the Halo name on it, it takes place in the universe, but I don’t get a Halo vibe from it like I did from past games.
There are so many ways that a game can advance and be innovative without the core gameplay being different compared to past iterations. Perfect example is Halo 3. While the gameplay had few changes compared to Halo 2 the additions of Forge, Theater, and gametypes like Infection introduced community creations from gamemodes like Grifball, added in the ability to make screenshots, and made it easier for people to make Machinima which in return increased Halo’s presence on sites like Youtube.
It’s advancements like those that make the game play the same but still brings in a breath of fresh air and only improves the longevity of the franchise. I want new maps, I want new weapons, I want new gametypes, I want new experiences.
What can be done in future titles?
- Team Creator for ranked playlists similar to what Black Ops 2 did with the inclusion of a seasonal leaderboard for each ranked playlist- Project Spark esque Forge; full terrain editor, weather, day/night cycle, etc along with classic forge- Spectator Mode. We’ve seen a very barebones version in the beta compared to what we will see in the full game.- The return of theater for modes outside of MP along with the return of multiple people watching at once plus the ability to watch multiple PoVs at one time- Money matches in which you can gamble cR before every game(if you wish) that you could buy armor pieces, new emblems, etc- Return of old gamemodes that have been missing such as Invasion along with the addition of new gamemodesSome pretty simple ones listed and some are just improvements, but so much more could be potentially done without having to try so hard to make Halo different to past games.
Like I said. I don’t just want rehashes of past titles contrary to popular belief, but I don’t want a game that’s mixed with mechanics that seem to be there just to be there. I don’t want it to catch up with the gaming industry if it leads to that. I don’t want mechanics just because it doesn’t make sense in the lore if they can’t do things like sprint.
One feature that would be awesome that you just mentioned was the multiple PoV’s in theater mode. Always wanted that since H3 when reviewing gameplay.

So if halo 5 has all of these thing Would you not be happy? You refuse Halo 5 After one beta released a little less then a year away from release of the full game? A game that could very well offer quite a bit of options.

If they remove things like sprint and ADS(let’s be honest it’s ADS) then I’ll be happy, but that’s a longshot. I did get tired of the beta to the point I didn’t even play in Week 3.
You know what grinds my gears? Stuff that has been in Halo since CE or Halo 2, and NOT being expanded upon whatsoever…
-
Despite vehicles having set health since Halo Reach, health bars have not returned. This is unfortunate, because you WILL explode at full shields if your vehicle is badly damaged. We kinda need it now…
-
With body suits being two-toned now, we could have primary, secondary, and tertiary color options.
-
They added Elites to Multiplayer in Halo 2. Not only is that feature being adamantly shrugged aside, but if they added one playable species to the series, don’t you think they planned to add another? Where’s my Grunt Slayer - no precision weapons on map, and Sniper Rifle spawns replaced with half-empty Pistols? Make it happen. It might even be competitive!

I like the idea of these features (minus money matches). However, none of these things impacts the game from a gameplay standpoint. Many of these are multiplayer only options, and are purely viewing related. To a player, these might as well not exist, so on the surface, it would in fact be a rehash of games prior to it. Halo 3 changed a bit from 2, although many of the changes were evident in the story (enemy types) or weapon specific things (variety/added to sandbox). While many people seem to think 3 took everything from 2 and made it better, some of these issues bogged down the enjoyment of 3 for some players, and the reduced player speed led to campier gameplay than in 2.
What would be some things you would add to the GAMEPLAY that would still feel like Halo to you, but not be a rehash?

You should be pretty freaking stoked about H5 then, as it certainly has all of these. Also, the changes you mentioned may make it into the final game. Remember, we played a beta which was literally probably about 1% of the game itself. You can’t compare a beta to games that have been fully released and had multiple expansion packs released as well.
Also, you said in the OP that you want a new experience and then went on to ask for experiences that are (as you stated) in COD:BO2, project spark, and previous Halo titles. Very counterproductive to your point.

i like these ideas, the op gets it! i did not like call of failo 4 nor the direction 343 is going with in 5, it does not feel like halo.

Not really.
It has the old Halo stuff with old COD stuff thrown on top. I’ve already played all of that.

SO You totally throw away a potentially great game. One in which you have only encountered but a fraction. ANd all because a few minor mechanics?
This train of thought astounds me to no end lol. The beta was seriously the most fun i have had in halo since playing halo 2/3 split screen lan with my friends in high school.
Halo 5 has so much potential And we no only a small fraction of what we will be fully getting.
Well said, deltaunithink. I share your thoughts.
These are definitely the types of changes I would rather see.
People need to realize that the so called “purists” want new things as well. New maps, new weapons, new gametypes, new features, new enemies, a new story, everyone wants these things. The difference is that the many people want the core gameplay to remain recognizable. This should not be an unreasonable desire for a game in a series.
Halo 1-3 all had flaws, but there was not anything fundamentally ‘outdated’ about them. There is so much room to tweak, improve, and refine, that the claims of “they just want Halo 2/3.5” are just silly
On top of the OPs suggestions I would like to see things like: A clan system where members can rank up within the clan by playing and winning together, Firefight on multiplayer maps with forge support(for trolling AI), create your own skulls. And as far as gameplay tweaks go they are too numerous to list, everything from FOV adjustments, player speed and jump, levels of auto-aim and magnetism, etc, etc. I could go on and on.
I don’t want a rehash, but I also don’t want a game that doesn’t feel like an entry in the series.

I wouldn’t call sprint and ADS minor features when they affect they way the game is played so much. Sure there’s a lot more to be seen but again those features affect it which turns me off.

Some features work while some do not. Halo 3 wasn’t the first video game to add theater mode or forge but it definitely brought new experiences.
Title says it all. No one can be happy with anything anymore. We are a generation of know-it-all would-be game designers who want a game which is exactly the way we would make it if we were 343, and anything which varies from that is a “failure” which “ruins” the franchise. I’m not trying to be hard on the OP - I’m pretty much that way myself at times. I just think we need to stop going into panic mode based on some minimalist three week beta that happened almost a full year before the launch.

343 wanted feedback. I’m giving them feedback. Unless they actually remove some of these mechanics I’ll continue to be a “know-it-all would-be game designer”

I get it, and you’re absolutely right. But that title really was a button-presser, I gotta tell you.
Yea I agree. I think I know what makes most of the community pissed off with 343i’s beta.
Of course we can all say , Halo would be a much better game if it featured X,Y, Z.
But I believe the real disappointment is here because 343 displayed 2 games in a row, they can come up with nothing that is Original, Spontaneous, or Innovative.
I mean seriously dude. Without even being biased…
Everything from ADS to hearing players say “Enemy Grenade”
Its like no effort went into creating a new experience. A game should not feel “cheap & generic” before it even came out.
The gun lowered while sprinting, players “chatting”, clamber … All of this Is available in the gaming market elsewhere.
If 343i wanted to keep these features and were honest to making them work.
Well… I would have to say they failed. Because Its not what you say but how you say it…
And as far as implementing map design, Spartan Abilities, Call-outs, Weapons(New or old)…
Nothing feels engaging, unique, spontaneous, and It even does not have that Halo feel.
343 Confirmed the whole terrain editor feature,I like weather.

I’m pretty sure it’s just placing terrain pieces like in Halo 2 Anniversary. I would much prefer a full on terrain editor
