So my friend made the plunge today to play this game. The first thing he did was play through the campaign on normal (to get a feel for it) and ended up liking it more than me. Several hours ago we finally got a chance to play some MP together. He generally averages 1.6KD in Halo, so I wasnt expecting problems. Not trying to dis him of course, I’m not much better at Halo than he is. So of course we’ll deal with tough competition. We’re not awful, but we’re not the greatest either. We get that. I guess it was my bad for not giving him a heads up on the REQ system (that REQ tutorial is cute, 343i, but out of the millions who’ve bought the game, a couple hundred thousand watching the video doesnt exactly help the majority of newcomers.)
But anyway, the last couple hours have been hell for us. Getting unbalanced teams, he barely had any REQ cards to play around with so we kept getting stomped by people who spawned tanks and banshees for days. We even ended up one match 45-1,000 on Stormbreak. I still dont think it’s a great idea to have a legendary at the very beginning of a match because whoever kills it already has a huge advantage. And once they made they push, we couldnt fight back. Level three reqs vs level five-seven and they camped the outside of our base with tanks. Not exactly the best first impression. I dont know if this was just a bad day for us, but I’ve never lost so many matches in a row before. Its like just because we’re a group the game decided to have us with randoms with no-to-little ranks versus clans of platinum and diamonds.
I’ve never seen him so disillusioned with Halo before. And honestly, I’m not far behind. When the matches are more even and it goes well, the game is great. But when it’s bad, it’s infuriating. Its not necessarily one big issue but a collection of smaller issues.
I know there’s some changes coming and we’re getting forge and btb soon, but a lot of things that could help save Halo’s longevity needed to be here yesterday. But after tonight, I fear that I’m not the only one frustrated with the current state of this game. And it worries me to wonder if the MP will end up drying up faster than Halo 4.
I mean, there’s a lot that’s a huge step up from Halo 4. But there’s also a lot that I feel they completely dropped the ball on.
EDIT: It also doesnt help how there’s no social playlist. There are times me and friends just want to play Halo MP without worrying about our KDA.

I figured that would be an even worse mode to play since I’ve already had several bad experiences being the attackers on the stormbreak map. How there’s essentially only one way up the ramp and you cant pick where you spawn and the inside is too well defensible.

Yeah, it does get pretty crazy. But I’ve grown to like it much more. It just takes a bit of getting used to.
Halo 5 is very noob friendly as compared to other Halo games. Cough, assault rifle, cough.
You’re issue isn’t a learning curve of any kind, it’s just team balancing. I have to say, warzone has the worst team balancing I’ve ever seen in any game.

Ehh, the BR and pistol crap all over the AR. Especially with this game’s bullet magnetism of precision weapons. the AR was OP in the beta, but now it’s next to average. Maybe just slightly better than Halo 4’s. From what I’ve tested of the automatic weapons, the AR is actually weaker than the suppressor, SAW, SMG and storm rifle. Especially the Storm Rifle.
But I agree that balancing of warzone is probably the worst of the franchise.

Warzone isn’t supposed to be balanced… That’s sort of the point.

Warzone Assault actually isn’t too bad, I find it to be a bit more fun than the normal gametype. REQ level doesn’t ramp up nearly as fast, so people aren’t spawning tanks and crap super early. It has direct objectives, and there’s all sorts of different ways to get into a base and create flanks. I’d definitely give that a try if you guys want to get some experience with the game mode under your belts and work on those REQ collections.

matching players with little to no experience with hardly any decent req cards versus a clan of players with friggin’ oni class tanks and warthogs isnt the point either.

While that is true, keep in mind that reqs still take a factor regarding loadouts. When you first start you only have the AR and pistol, which are dwarfed by the SMG and BR respectively.
We played a few rounds of slayer and breakout to try to break that rut, but no luck there either. I noticed the players we were up against a couple times were a group of two diamonds, a platinum and a no rank. I’m a platinum in slayer, my friend is a no rank and my two teammates were no ranks.

Yeah go play 5 matches in a row where the score is 50-1000 and you’re on the losing team. It’s the opposite of “fun” and I’d bet you wouldn’t be making that argument if you had the same experience that I’ve had.
This is just another thing to add to the list of where 343 have dropped the ball. Too busy growing neck beards to realise what it was that made Halo great in the first place.

I wouldnt exactly say that. Once again, when the game actually feels balanced it’s great. But right now there’s more broken and unbalanced than not. They completely nailed the classic Halo arena style gameplay. Just not the ranking and matchmaking.

As i can see from your last 20 warzone games there was 1 went really bad imo thats rare.
Warzone is not about winning and loosing(sure all want the Win)thats the reason its not ranked you cannot expect to win every game, just have fun.
Unless your ratio is ok 53% wins on warzone.

Im not trolling. This does happen. ie: if you’re team is able to quickly push through the bases on Stormbreak along with taking out the legendary, this causes an avalanche effect. the opposing is getting punished for being pelted by having a significantly lower req level than the dominating team, and for every kill they get is 1 point, while the other is three points. So they can literally just spawn trap you in your core base with power weapon and vehicles. And since their req level is higher, you have tanks and oni-hogs vs mongooses and needlers.
I know this because I’ve succeeded in doing it twice (one match 1000-65 and another 1000-115) and last night was the first it’s happened to me.

And normally this is a non-issue. But for some reason last night was just bad luck I guess. Or atleast I’d like to call it that. Despite losing eight matches (we dabbled back and forth between warzone and arena) in a row, I felt I did fine for myself for some of them with positive KDA’s and being in the top three for warzone and the top player in arena. but damn, last night really left a a bad impression on us.

Plenty of ways to attack the attackers in Warzone assault.
There weren’t “Millions” of people who bought halo 5. Its more like around 150,000 and yeah, since all the playlists are ranked, nearly everyone is tryharding.
