My buddy and I hopped on today to play some ranked Halo 3 and we can’t queue together. It says we’re on different versions of the game but neither of us have an update? Was there a recent patch or something for steam that just hasn’t gone out yet or something?
It could be that H3 ranked has cross-play disabled.

I’m not sure if this is in fact the problem, but make sure you both have crossplay enabled.
Make sure you’re on the latest version which is 1.2589.0.0
