I can't forgive 343 removing campaign theater

No Campaign Theater is one of this games biggest disappointments for me. I’ve spent many hours watching Campaign clips in H3 and Reach.

The loss of Campaign Theater was singlehandedly the most devastating thing about Halo 4.

In particular, I was enamored by the panoramic/third person shots used in the ViDocs and trailer. So imagine my disappointment when I find out those were just done with dev tools.

It was a major step backwards. 343i only made it worse by taking 3-6 months to mention their progress (after mentioning it once in a bulletin), which was at that point, null and void.

> I agree. I was playing Spartan Ops and a Phantom crashed into the ground and EXPLODED! It was so funny, that I forgot that I didn’t own a video capture card. That moment is lost forever. Shame.

> It’s also annoying because the level design in Halo 4 is quite breathtaking, and there’s no real way of exploring it without pan-cam. You need theater for pan-cam, so that’s out of the question. I can understand that decision, though. They only had a maximum of 8 gigabytes to work with, and Campaign took up all of it.

Beats the heck out of what I once saw: a Banshee kamikaze against another Banshee.

I recall Halo 3: ODST Firefight allowing you to go freeroaming camera during a match when you died. That definitely needs to return.

> > I was definitely bummed to hear that a lot of features added in previous titles were removed. If 343i kept theater in Campaign and allowed us to use it in Spartan Ops, I think the game would have been a bit better for it. I’m also bummed that we can’t gain experience for playing the Campaign, aside from two weekly challenges, or matchmake co-operative games. It kills the replayability.

> > Perhaps Halo V will show us how much 343i has learned from their shortcomings. Definitely do not expect them to program all of this in to Halo 4 at all.

> ^YES
> I would be playing and speedrunning H4 non-stop if it had campaign theater.

I know plenty of trickers that’d give H4 a chance if it had campaign theater.

People send a lot of angst towards Reach, some going as far as labling it ‘the beginning of the end’. That’s a topic for another thread, but I think we all agree that the all-encompassing Theater mode was glorious. The meta-game aspects as well in Halo 3 and Reach definitely gave a new way to play the game. It’s a blast fighting against friends and matchmade players alike for that high score or to earn Weekly/Daily Challenge experience points.

Replayability was certainly not an issue for those titles. Looking back, it’s truly unfortunate that 343i had to make compromises with Microsoft’s relentless publishing agenda. Though I suppose it was mainly due to an uncertain business future of the franchise now that 343i had officially taken the reigns.

Halo 4 was neutered before it even left the womb. We can only hope that the devs were given much more leeway with Halo 5 and additional power of the next generation Xbox.

> They were rushed
> There is no problem

This isn’t even a problem compared to some of the huge game braking problems Halo 4 still has …

There have been many moments in which I was playing Spartan Ops, and something hilarious happened.
I would think to myself, “I gotta’ record that!”, but alas, I could not.

Also, Campaign Scoring is extremely useful if you’re trying to beat the Campaign on Mythic Difficulty.

On top of that, Scoring led to added Achievements in H3 and ODST which required you to get a certain number of points.
Those added replayability to the games.

It’s all incredibly sad, I miss tons of things missed out in the Campaign, while the story was good, and I replay it for the story, all these features just make the Campaign all the much better

It’s sort of like Pizza, a plain Pizza is nice, add toppings and it becomes better

> It’s sort of like Pizza, a plain Pizza is nice, add toppings and it becomes better

That is wisdom for the ages if I’ve ever seen it, Sir.

All of these mentionings of hilarious or curious events happening within the Campaign or Spartan Ops has my mangy feathers ruffled. Just this morning a Banshee, which I was certain would finish my unshielded self off in a few shots, randomly boosted and hooked a sharp right turn right in to a cliff wall where it promptly exploded. Oh, how I would have loved to capture that on film.

When I was doing Mythic on Reclaimer, after the Librarian cutscene and you meet back up with the UNSC a Ghost flipped out and launched at me and killed me, it was annoying but hilarious

I agree.

And the same MP screenshots, we see in every Bulletin, just in a different color and perspective, are reeeeeeeeeally boring after a while.

I never used it so it’s not a feature I miss. If campaign theater was removed to provide something awesome then I’d kinda understand. But I don’t see anything awesome to replace it. I suspect, if anything, it was removed for disc space issues. Here’s hoping Halo 5 brings it back (among other things).

I’ve GOT to show you this clip I made - I was low on shields and this one Grunt with an FRG takes out the Elite that was rushing me with a sword. Let me just bring up… oh, wait… nevermind…

I played Reach Campaign for Commendations and Challenges long after I made Inheritor.

In Halo 4, I fired it up the other day to help some friends to get Achievements, but otherwise never touch it. Frankly, I confuse myself sometimes, and mis-remember “Campaign” stuff that is really SpOps.
