Out of the 6 relevant detector units in the game (scouts don’t count), 4 of them are “support” units; that is, they should be utilizing range and engaging enemies from the rear of your army. Wolverines, Reavers, Snipers, and Rangers are all squishy and should not be on your front lines trying to detect a base. And the other 2 detector units (Nightingales and Engineers) are relatively squishy as well and are also high priority targets due to their healing. I just realized this while watching some of Nakamura’s custom games vs Berk on Youtube. He was Anders and trying to utilize Kodiaks against his opponent, but his detectors kept dying. He eventually won but the game lasted a -Yoink!-ing hour. It’s -Yoink!-ing crazy. Who made the design decision to give detect to the few units in the game that need range to be effective? Jeez. I know I’m probably really late on this, but it just blows my mind. So many things in this game artificially extend matches, it’s just ridiculous.
Detector units tend to be pretty fragile in RTS games, I can’t think of any “tanky” detectors in any game
I’d imagine because if something can reveal an entire cloaked army took forever to die, well they wouldn’t really be scouts. Even in real life there are examples of if the Scout dies, the operation is usually over.
Detection is currently fine. Pretty sure many of us wanted Starcraft like detection, but HW2 works in a different way by having more detectors available (one per building) instead of having more range.
The only issue was the cloak generator and with the detection radius extended to the building’s border that’s no longer a huge issue.

Other RTS’s have had camo? Crap I thought that was a native original to Halo Wars based off a mechanic in Halo Wars 1 that sucked and didn’t work half the time (For the honour guards).
If it hasn’t happened in other games, what’s stopping having one detect unit that’s tanky? Is it with balance purpose? Since, of course you have to protect your fragile supports.
Than again, how could it make sense if tanks are usually, well, Tanks like Scorpions or Wraiths, and when you think of healthy troops you think of Heroes.
Giving Heroes detect sounds a little fishy.
Is there even an answer to this issue?
Realistically, if I had the option, I’d put a friggin scanner on everything that moved at this point in fighting Covenant tech. It’s simply an example of things happening that make little to no sense outside of gameplay in a realistic setting.

Yeah, cloak is hardly a Halo exclusive. Command and Conquer has invisible artillery, bombers, walkers, tanks, snipers (duh), assassins, even commandos that can level an entire base can be cloaked. Even the bases themselves can be cloaked (just like HW2).

Maybe add a scan into your leader powers that has to recharge . Similar to starcraft , you have a scan in your command center and needs to recharge . Just an idea?!
The only thing I don’t like is that there’s more detecting units than there are cloaking. In all honesty I find cloaking pointless due to engineer/nightingale spam in every army.

Detect units in other games tend to be powerful casters or spammable units. So I think it’s a fair balance.

That sounds pretty cool actually!
Would UNSC get a flat scanner, but banished maybe something more gimmicky?
I could imagine something like that taking flight on something like a base, potentially! I mean, we’re getting building slot mega turrets soon, Buildings could be changed forever!
Nice idea!

It can also be used to scout an enemy base and see what they are up too. Maybe push it to second leader upgrade or something ?
