I have been playing Destiny for a while and thought that they had their Crucible matchmaking screwed up. I remember how Halo 5 was when it first came out, so I thought, I’ll go back to 5 because the games are balanced as far as skill level goes.
I am shocked. Every match I played tonight was a pub stomp of me and my teammates. I would use the “focused” setting, but we would get stomped again.
What has happened to this game? I know jerks will say “git gud”, but guess what, I’m not. And I don’t want to play with a bunch of Diamond and Onyx level people to ruin what should be a fun gaming experience. 343, I’m disappointed. I had heard Halo 5 was and improvement, so I came back. I don’t see the improvements…
What was the rank of your teammates? I noticed you were playing alot of Slayer recently, and that your top Slayer rank ever is Platinum 4. Halo’s matchmaking goes based on the average rank of your fireteam, so if you were playing with diamond or higher friends, it could end up matching your team against players of higher rank than yourself.
I faced a lot of diamonds. Over time, it put me with more platinum. What I’m concerned about is I saw golds tearing through platinum and diamonds, and I honestly felt like I was with a group of randoms while we faced teams that seemed to be grouped together because their timing was impeccable. I don’e expect to win every game, but I want to be in a game where it feels like I have a chance. I think my platinum 4 was a joke or mistake. Gold 6 this time, and I don’t see how I got that.
In terms of rankings now compared to back at launch, it’s true that playing skill has leveled out as people learned the game. So it makes sense that your current rank and your all-time rank are no longer the same. Again, the matching is based on average rank, so the people you play with have an effect on who you get matched with. I went back through several of your Arena matches to see the ranks of your team and the opposition. It appears you were playing solo, as each fireteam was composed of different people. Playing solo, of course, offers a mixed bag in terms of matching, because the system has more variables to work with. It’s true that you saw opposition of diamond or higher ranking in some cases, but most of those cases also saw low to mid gold rankers on the same teams as the diamond+ rankers. So, in respect to average team rank, most of those matches were closely matched. The matchmaking system isn’t perfect (no system is), but based on your game history, I see nothing wrong with the matches you were in. It could be that you experienced a string of bad luck. In your last 10 games, you had 3 victories and 4 defeats, as well as 3 DNFs (quitting is bad, don’t do that). You’re sitting on a positive K/D and a win percentage just over 50%; that suggests that you have been getting pretty close matches in terms of games, but have been coming out ahead more often than not.
I feel your pain. I was just playing ranked Halo 2 on MCC. Out of eight players six were ranked in single digits and then each team had a 50. I know that’s a “balanced” match, but I’m pretty sure that if the population is so low that you have to have the widest rank spread that’s mathematically possible then you have a broken game. I don’t know if H5 is that bad because I only play warzone, but the ranking systems of the Halo franchise have been failing since the day Halo 2 launched. I guess we’re crazy to expect them to be any better now than they’ve ever been.

I understand where you are coming from. As far as the matches I left, one was down to a 4 v 1, me being the one. The others got out of hand in the first minute. My point is, I know what you’re saying is mathematically balanced, but it is not real life balanced. Tiers should only play that tier and possibly the lowest tier from the one above it or the highest tier from the one below it. Right now, the game allows too many players to get trashed. This affects the population, when the population is lower, then this problem exacerbates itself.
