I am REALLY worried...

I’m going to be fairly straight forward with this one, as my brew is getting colder by the minute…

With the whole 8th Generation (Or whatever number we’re on now) of consoles mainly being catered to online multiplayer nowadays, And after noticing that you can’t even use the custom game mode whilst playing offline, not to mention the fact that system link is non-existent and split-screen as everyone knows has been abolished…

I’m extremely worried about this game and it’s sequel because of this, what will happen on the fateful day that the servers finally go dark? Will all of my matchmaking, forge and custom game variant efforts all be in vain? Will we no longer be able to take a nostalgic trip to gaze upon our former glory days because of a bloody error message?

It’s a bit saddening to know that my copy of Halo 3 will be more accessible than 5 the day the servers get shut down for both of those games

I’ve felt quite pessimistic about this since I first purchased my Xbox One, I feel like I don’t truly own the game.

Debate.

Im quite sure the classic player hosting (Halo 3 and Reaches form of matchmaking) is still used as a backup in case that exact situation happens. If not, 343 get onto it.

There is no debate. This is like crying that we go to the supermarket to buy food instead of hunting for it because you like the blood stains in your home. In 10,15,20 years, whatever it may be, if you’re still playing the same game, you literally have an issue and you cannot blame a game company and the world’s trends on not catering to the 5 people that feel this way. Games are turning into services. I’m sorry you live in 1990 where you just go buy a game and that’s it, no patches, no dlc, no anything post-launch. Now, they add content for years after a launch, but to do this, things need to be online. And yea, you could debate that certain things shouldn’t be online-only, but this is part of the problem. You are complaining that custom games are on dedicated servers. I mean, what the -Yoink- is wrong with you?

It’s a video game. It’s completely virtual - figuratively and literally. And it’s ephemeral. It’s designed to become obsolete and to be replaced. And for it’s memory to fade into oblivion. That’s as it should be. I don’t want to be that sad middle-aged guy with a wall full of high school football trophies. I want to move on to the next thing when the time comes. That’s not just the nature of video games - it’s the nature of life.

I’m not complaining about anything if you read my little query chap.

The thing that is saddening me is that in the future, when everyone is playing their Xbox 5000, perhaps I want to take a nostalgic day visiting my glory days on Halo 5, but WAIT! I can’t because Derpicated servers, yet my 360 (Reach, 3, 4 whatnot) Will still be able to function WITH all of my old maps, game modes and such.

Sorry that I can’t keep up with this ridiculous new age philosophy on gaming.

I think when I first played halo 5, I got ticked off of there not being any split-screen. But I didn’t just stop playing, I played the online modes warzone and slayer. I had fun and I still do playing this game. However, when the time comes, I can’t keep playing games, I gotta focus on other things to do in life like exercise, draw, and read comics. I have fun playing games but that’s not what I do my whole life.

It’s normal for servers to go down, but considering the game is funded by Microsoft and REQ packs, the servers will be up for years. H1 servers only recently went down for PC…

But surely a trophy is a symbol to reminisce on your past glories?

I can absolutely respect that technology will continue to move up and on, but that doesn’t mean that 3/4 of my halo 5 disc should become obsolete and inaccessible when previous installments are…

That’s quite a pessimistic outlook you have there chap.

I know this doesn’t sound like much but, if the matchmaking doesn’t work, then at least you can play the campaign and watch theater mode. The campaign is the only game mode you can play without internet (which sucks). But hey, at least you can play something without internet in this game.

Sad truth is we gamers feel like we CAN have our cake and eat it too. But we all know that’s not how that expression goes.

This is true, but it’s upsetting to know that in the future my copy of Halo 3 will be more accessible with forge and customs still working (Although obviously without the player cap), Eh, it’s a substantial change to enable the use of forge and custom games offline, but i think they should implement it before the end of the game’s lifespan. At least, as a consumer i’d feel a lot happier knowing this product is mine for as long as I choose to have it, not how long microsoft chooses.

I’m also quite shocked that people are so willing to let this slide without question…

You dont own any of your games. You own the right to play them, thats it. Its amazing how often these companies use that loophole to substantiate the types of things you alluded to in your post.

The connected world we live in will most certainly be a very sad place in 5-10 years.

It isn’t meant to be pessimistic. It’s born out of experience. For example, nobody loved Reach Firefight more than I did, and I miss it every time I play Halo. But it’s gone, I can’t bring it back, and if I spend too much time thinking about it then that’s the moral equivalent of wishing away the present. And the future. Another example: I have a usb drive filled with about 150 of my Halo 4 forge maps. Will I ever play them again? Nope. But that isn’t the point. The point is that all of that work, all of the hours I put into those maps… that’s all in my head now, and I’ll carry that knowledge and experience with me into Guardians forge. And there I’ll build maps that I never could have built without that previous experience. And they will be amazing. And the work I do in Guardians becomes the monument to all the past work in all the past games. The service record I build up here is representing my entire Halo career. I don’t think that’s pessimistic at all. Making a virtue of necessity? Sure. But I think it’s still a pretty healthy attitude given the temporary nature of the world we live in and the games we play.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory. Haha. It is what it is. If you feel as though one day all the spent time may be in vain and all will be lost then maybe playing games isn’t the best option for your livelihood.

Not true, take a look at the substantial list of single player story driven games on the Xbox one, they’re still going to be playable when the Xbone becomes an old dog looking to be euthanized

Is it really too much to ask for the devs to implement a change like that? Even if not possible now, but at some point during the end of the game’s life span.

Split-screen will probably be back in Halo 6 or later, Frainke himself said so in an interview (source). They couldn’t optimize the engine enough to implement it even though it was planned. It’s a bummer, but I can live without it. If my friends come over I’ll just play Halo 1-4; Halo 5 not having split-screen doesn’t affect my enjoyment of those games. Anyway, Halo 5’s campaign is playable offline, so that’s a plus.

To bad now the single player in this game is only one mode. Why can’t the good old split-screen come back? Tons of people miss it already. Does 343 just think that having Xbox live and being connected to the internet is the only way to play with friends? It’s not.

Split-screen was originally planned but had to be scrapped because of time constraints. Frainke said that it will probably be back in Halo 6 or later.

I really hope so. It’s just that people do have a good time playing on local split-screen. Since this was scrapped in halo 5, in the future, people will look at this game and say, “Man Halo 6 is so much better than this.” It’s because that game will have split-screen.
