I almost want Cortana to die (Hear me out!)

You’ve probably read the title and thought ‘What are you on about, total idiot’. Now believe me, I love Cortana just as much as you guys; she’s been my virtual girlfriend for ten years.

That being said, I almost want Cortana to die off in a manner of speaking, for the sake of the story. I adore than blue entity and all of her British mannerisms; but I don’t think 343 can legitimately save her from Rampancy without conflicting with the story.

I suppose it’s important to remember that we’ve only had Cryptum thus far in regards to the Forerunner trilogy. Thus far, the only way I can see Cortana being saved is via a Forerunner technology that we’re yet to know about. (Let’s face it, 343 Guilty Spark went on for over 100,000 years…)

I hope to God that they have a way to save her, and still make it seem like a probable outcome. What do you guys think?

I dissagree because all she needs to end rampancy is to be in a computer big enough for her to expand her knowledge as much as possible. And then she will become metastable.

Alot of Halo 4 may be about Cortana trying to hinder Chiefs efforts (ie trying to get him killed).
They could go the other way and do what you suggested about the Forerunner technology prolonging her lifespan, but personally I want the evil Cortana to stay.

Just occurred to me that maybe the Reclaimer trilogy will be the process of Chief vs. Cortana, in the sense that she becomes Rampant, and the Chief has to maybe create some sort of Alliance between the Precursors and the Forerunners to stop her? Picking at straws here, but maybe Cortana’s story will be bigger than we imagined.

Really Cortana was dying in Halo 3, I don’t think she’ll last that much longer. And when you reminded me of guilty spark, I’d like to point out that guilty spark as well as some of the other monitors malfuctioned and are broken. It points that out in some of the Terminals in Halo Anniversary, And became apparent in the main games it was obvious that spark was very unstable.

I think Forerunner tech will save her.

She should become a Purple lensed Monitor to prolong her life span and give her more of a use (Like being able to use aspects of Forunner technology to progress through the Constuct/ship/portal/ thingy.

Halo’s not worth playing without Spark or Johnson :’(

I agree Johnson was a terrible loss. but there will probably be a monitor to replace Guitly Spark. Like the red monitor in Halo 2.

if Cortana dies I want an easter egg vehicle made for her.

I never liked Cortana much to begin with. So…

Yeah probably

Or she and all the other UNSC AI can learn what the “delete” function does?

I seriously find it odd that AI are destroyed or go rampant from an overabundance of stored data; shouldn’t they be intelligent enough to prioritize data and delete low-priority intelligence? They’re based on the human brain, which does the same thing (albeit overzealously and inaccurately) every millisecond one spends alive!

Someone on bungie.net brought up the point that maybe she went through rampancy when she was with the gravemind.

A theory I had for the Reclaimer trilogy was that Cortana goes rampant in Halo 5, and tries to kill the Chief throughout Halo 6. Just my theory.

I like the idea about cortana becoming a monitor because that would make more of character that we can see more often not just hear her. The whole thing about her going rampant and trying to kill John is just stupid. Maybe John puts her into a monitor or other forerunner tech to stop her befor she goes rampant.

She might. But not in halo 4. But maybe Halo 5 or 6.

If the Monitors survived for so long, Cortana can too.

I hope she does have a major plot role, though. In CE, she was initially going to go mad and try to take over, but Bungie scrapped the idea. Maybe 343 will resurrect it?

I heard about this. Part of me though still adores her as a companion, and 343 would have to tread carefully not to divide the fan base.

I think it gets to the point where they can no longer help it, and hunger for knowledge so much that they forget about everything else around them. Naturally, it wouldn’t be great to be in the field with an AI that doesn’t bother about the things that are happening around it. We can see this with Cortana in the Control Room; she forgets about what she and Chief are supposed to be doing.

Cortana’s state of mind will, I hope, play an interesting part in Halo 4. I can’t really imagine her going mad and trying to take over everything, but I can see her becoming a problem John will have to deal with eventually.

this would be awesome IMO, as much as I love Cortana.
