I wanted to address the wide skill gap in arena games. I’m also wondering if 343i planned on shrinking down the number of playlists. I’m a mostly platinum player and tonight…well, it was rough. I played a few slayer games and a couple of SWAT. In the slayer games, I got crushed every single game. I wasn’t even close in skill. I messages and apologized to a teammate after one game who ended up with 24 kills and I had like 3…we lost.
Part of my problem is I’ve been focusing on growing my business and I haven’t had the same amount of time to dedicate to playing Halo as I did a year ago or so. So I’m not going to get much better only playing a few nights here and there. Coming back into playing Halo after a few months off I knew I’d be rusty, I knew I’d have a hard time at first. I feel like the rust has come off for the most part but I am being out-shot, out-positioned, out-played routinely. My issue is I’m playing mostly Onyx level players while I rank Platinum. All I can do is “git gud” but I feel like a junior varsity player going up against a semi-pro. I’m not sure how much I can learn and slowly get better if I’m getting demolished every game.
I thought consolidation of playlists would be a bad idea. I’ve always advocated for having Doubles, Snipers, etc. But clearly there are not enough players to support all the playlists.
I think as a community we should consider moving back to a format of 5 arena playlists. Arena, Slayer, Big Team, Doubles, and Objective (breakout, flag, strongholds, etc). I know a lot of people love goofy games so maybe switch out Objective for Action Sacks. I think fewer playlists with more skill equality in-game is worth it.
What do you guys think? Have you noticed the skill gap that I’m seeing? Would you consider less playlists for more evenly balanced games? Is sprouted-grain really healthier than regular grain? Thank you in advance for any contributions.
I think its due to population
It may be due to population. It’s been mixed for me. Sometimes I do the crushing and sometimes I get crushed be it’s always been that way for me.
Have you tried changing your search parameters to focused? I’ve noticed when I was playing solo on balanced, I would go on really bad losing streaks (1 win and 8-10 losses). Ever since I changed it to focused, the ranks between teams have seemed to be more evenly matched. I would say try that out and come back and let me know your results.

Judging by your service record, most of your losses aren’t really your fault rather, its the matchmaking system. You’ve regularly gone against diamond and onyxs and even a champion at one point. Try playing some of the higher populated playlists for good skill matching and improve from there. There is that one game where your team somehow lost to a 3 man team with a gold level player 50 to 15 but I chalk that up to a smurf account. Skill gap is present but as I said before, its mostly the system messing up your matchmaking. Theres no easy answer to whether or not to reduce playlists. On one hand reducing playlists would concentrate players and improve skill based matchmaking but it could also drive players further away.
As for the grain, i don’t really know
Good luck with your business

That’s a good idea. I totally forgot about that. I’ll come back and update after I’ve done that to see if it mades a difference.
