A big problem with Halo is that skill is needed to play. This turns off a lot of people. The easy solution was to divide the population. Firstly, Halo had social and ranked playlist. Secondly, the ranked playlist divided players by skill.
Now introduce Reach, 1 ranked playlist, an extremely broken playlist that none of the skilled players want to play. This throws them all into the social playlists, where they dominate and go extremely positive forcing the casuals into playlists like action sack and grifball.
Halo 4, come on.

I wouldn’t say that’s a problem. People don’t play games like Dota, Quake and whatnot because they are easy…
OP is correct. Every gamer has their preference, be it competetive, custom game, fun with friends, life or death etc.
Reach neglected a sector of gamers (i.e competetive minded), and everyone suffers.
I agree if you want to try to please the majority (I know you cant please everyone) having a ranked and a social will help very much. It is needed for the competitive players to play the competitive players not casual to competitive.
Unlike most threads I read which similar to this one…I can’t agree more. Divide the playlists. The community needs to be one but the gametypes the community play can be separate. We all like Halo essentially for the same reasons, we just enjoy different styles of play
Provide a ranking system, and as time passes better players will be separated out according to skill.
Exactly, the amount of times I get rage messages because I spawn killed or dominated someone on Reach is unreal. In Halo 3 I was In games where it was always a fair fight and I didnt feel like a -Yoink- at the end of the game.

Apparently not true. All playlists in reach (supposedly) have trueskill to match players of equal skill just liek halo 3, it just isn’t displayed.
Nevertheless ranked/social was perfect and ranked playlists need to come back just because it’s more fun.

They all did, but the deciding factors for truskill were bad, and the gap for finding people within your truskill was near never ending. Even if you had a very high truskill it was possible to be matched against an average player and visa-versa.

I thought trueskill was always done exactly the same way, based on wins and losses, because microsoft said so?

He means trueskill was used very loosely when matching players. Basically you can get the equivalent of Halo 3 50’s matching 25’s or even lower.

I got that part but not what he meant about bad ‘deciding factors’…
