How'd You Get Into Halo?

How’d you guys first get into Halo? I’ve just been wondering about this.

This is how I first got into Halo - I used to hang out with my friend alot at his house, we played COD 4 and Halo 3 Forge/Custom alot. Eventually when I finally got my first Xbox360, I bought Halo 3 as my first game. Once I was so amazed at the storyline and wanted to know more, it lead to me buying and beating every Halo game one at a time, which lead to me getting and reading all the Halo books, which also lead to me not being able to get enough of Halo. I got my Xbox360 two years ago, so I’ve been into Halo for over two years now. How many years have you been with Halo?

I started with Halo 2 and I would play at my friends house. We played alot of custom games

It was a beautiful Sunday morning in late spring 2002 when a friend of mine who lived in the same building as me called me and invited me for some coffee and because he had “that awesome game I gotta show you.” So I went down, sat down on the couch, and he instantly held a controller in my face.

  • “Hm… Grey-in-grey. Doesn’t look that awesome. What’s that game called?”
  • “Halo.”
  • “Halo? Like in ‘What’s that ring called angels have around their heads?’”
  • “Yep.”

That grey-in-grey map was, of course, Hang’em High. But back then I didn’t know that. So we started playing 1-on-1 splitscreen slayer, or “showdown” as it’s strangely called in the German version. We had a lot of fun and tried various other maps, such as Damnation, Blood Gulch, and so on.

About an hour later we decided to start the campaign “just to get a first impression.” So we started the first level in splitscreen co-op, finished it, started the second level, finished it, and time flew by.

The next thing I remember that doesn’t have to do with playing was when my wife called me and jokingly asked if she could expect me to come home again today. It was half past nine already, and it was dark outside.

The birth of a Halo fan. =)

Hung out at a friend’s house a bit, he had CE on his Xbox, we played a bit but I wasn’t exactly impressed. Then when my brother got an Xbox and Halo 2, that campaign blew me away and I was hooked for life.

I started playing Halo because every single boy in my local middle school and high school was in love with Halo 3 when it launched, I tried it at a friend’s house and loved it. I went out and bought a 360 just for Halo but then all of those people quit playing after CoD got popular… I guess its all right, I grew to be better than most of them in a matter of a month or two. The only ones that could beat me were the ones that were a good 3-4 years older than me.

Halo CE was the game that came with the xbox console I bought all those years back. I loved the multiplayer and the campaign even more. Since then I’ve bought all the Halo games as I’ve fallen in love with them (apart from Halo wars :P)

I walked into Walmart and bought CE.

My oldest brother got an Xbox and Halo christmas 2001. That night I sat up with him and watched him play til about halfway through The Silent Cartogropher (it took him a while to get there because he got lost A LOT). In what I believe was summer 2005 he brought the Xbox to my parents house and left it with me because he was in the military and was about to be deployed to Iraq. I decided to play Halo because, for one thing, it was the only game he had that I knew anything about, and he refused to tell me what happened after AotCR. I tell ya, 343 Guilty Spark is scary playing for the first time, at night, in the dark, when its raining outside, and wondering why your brother refuses to tell you what happens in that level. I feel in love with the story and knew I would likely buy every sequel.

I got into a Warthog and never looked back

I had a friend that had an Xbox and Halo. I saw it around 2004 and thought the game was rad. I beat Halo 1 with my one friend years ago, and then bought it for the PC in early '07 when I got a new computer. Then I got an Xbox 360 with Halo 2 (because who needs real 360 games), beat that, and was super-hyped for Halo 3. Halo 3 was amazing, ODST was also amazing, and Reach is in my opinion the very best since Halo: CE.

Back in 2001 when I was 11, I was watching some tv to help my day go by faster. All of a sudden I see this commercial for Halo: Combat Evolved. As I am watching this with my 2 other brothers, we were all glued to the tv that we couldnt speak. We knew we had to have this game. After the commercial, the day went on until I had the guts to ask my mom if we could get this game for Christmas. As always, the 2 words we all have heard from our parents were, “We’ll see.” Christmas soon enough came around and I was trying desperately to look for a present that resembled even in the slightest of what an xbox game would look like wrapped in wrapping paper. The presents were all going away so quickly that I began to lose some hope. Until I saw a little present in the back of the tree. Could it be? Sure enough as I desperately ripped the paper off, there it was. Lord and behold was the very game that would change my gaming habits for years to come, Halo: Combat Evolved. It was by far the best Christmas I’ve ever had. So I would say about 10, going on 11 years that I have been with Halo.

I was introduced to Halo in early 2005 when I found a Halo 2 trailer online. Soon after, I asked a friend who had an Xbox about it, and he pulled out Halo 2. I sucked so bad.

I started asking other friends about it, and I was introduced to the Halo books. This is what started my love affair with Halo.

Back in 2001 Got an Xbox for Christmas with a copy of Halo CE… Best Present Ever. Now I have all the games, all the books, and am a Mega Fan. Awesome thing was my best friend got the same thing also, So we would always bring our consoles over to eachothers houses and attempt to move the TV’s around to play System-Link.

Best thing is we are till best friends, and have regular Lan Parties, Depending on the house we go to, the person brings their Xbox. Good thing is we both a have a spare TV in our Basements so we dont have to lug them from other rooms in our houses anymore

I just always remember going over to my friends and playing. I was getting owned but it was still fun and my friends were good sports. When I finally got an Xbox 360, I bought Halo 3 and I enjoyed it ever since.

Halo helped to pass the time during deployment in 2003-2004. We would huddle around the 13" tv and play 2v2. Sometimes we would get another xbox and LAN a 4v4. As a way to say thank you for Halo, I am big fan and advocate for the games.

I may play other games, but you will always find me going back to Halo.

> How’d you guys first get into Halo? I’ve just been wondering about this.

One night, about 10 years ago, a few friends and I were walking the streets of our humble and small city when a flash storm happen upon us.
Out of nowhere the full moon lit sky darkened as the clouds choked the white light away. The winds gusted with enough force to slide the garbage cans scattered about to keep it clean.
This confusion caused us to split in all directions, mostly likely because we lived scattered throughout the city beyond the core and that was the way home for most.
But not I. My curiosity would quell my fear to experience the freak moment now upon me.
However intelligence would soon override curiosity as the heavy rains turned to hail. Forcing me to take cover in the doorway the closest building.
It turns out this building was the then area’s game-shop (back then, they were actually cheaper than big name outlets for buying games most often).
It was there the light caught my eye. The shop is closed, and the power is out, how can there be a game running? I thought as I poked my face to the window to gain a better look.
Suddenly gust of wind caused a venturi effect that almost sucked me out of the shop’s recessed doorway. A surprisingly strong dual grip was needed on the door to keep me in place.
And that is when the door swung open. Recovering myself without thought into the building, the door shut just as quickly as I was nearly taken. No power, no alarm. What is that “aweing” I hear?" I was able to see the light was illuminating from around a cubby and again allowed curiosity to take me.
Rounding the corner was the awest site to behold at that moment. A 32" flatscreen cathode tv, supported by a 2000 watt dolby 5.1 system with sub, waited, situated in front of super-plush leather reclining leather chair. And on the screen was displayed a giant ring, as though sliced from Earth and twisted inside out and beaming at me.
Now the sounds of the Gregorian choir, heard clearly (as the sound was not turned to 11 but still down at 1), enhanced the awe I had found.
Most fascinating of all was a helmet and a set of gauntlets that lay on the chair. Where’s the rest? Does it fit?" Again, without thinking, I had moved the gauntlets to a table, sat down and was holding one of the most beautiful helmets I had ever seen. It was a type of green I had never seen. Its visor, both bold in shape and coloured gold starred back at me.
I then bounced it slightly in my hands, checking to see that it truly existed. It was real enough to feel. So solid and heavy. I flipped around to inspect the inside. Padded and inviting it appeared. So I did what anyone else in my position would do, I raised it to my head to put it on…

Oh sorry. Blacked out there for a moment. How’d I get here? Could have swore I was just kicking -Yoink- in outer space a moment ago.

My brother took me to LANs of CE and played Co-OP with me. Good times.
