How would You make the AR better?

The AR, imo, is getting weaker with every single halo game. Compared to its HCE version its virtually useless. Is there anyway for this once good weapon make a comback? If so how?

Make it stronger and more accurate.

Less spread/bloom. Larger mag. More damage, I can kill faster with the DMR/pistol than with the AR in Reach.

Replace it by SMG

Actually, the gun has gotten more powerful with each game, but anyway.

To make the AR (and any automatic weapon useful) I would increase the bullet spread and make it more powerful, much the like the Retro Lancer from Gears 3. This way, you wouldn’t be able to fire it full-automatic and hope to hit another player, you would have to fire in bursts, but you’d still have to chance to kill your enemy. With something like this, the AR, and any full-auto weapon, would be a useful.

Its power is irrelevant when the magazine size is cut in half, especially if you nerf that power from Halo 3 to Reach.
In other words, NO.

Reduce the accuracy of sustained fire drastically. Increase damage drastically.

Burst Fire will be feasible up to medium range. Up close it will hurt.

Vs the Plasma Rifle, say. Which needs to be more accurate and powerful than the AR in any fight that isn’t up close. The tradeoff is that it has slow moving projectiles.

Make it’s reticle slightly larger than the DMR’s, but keep the bloom. Buff the damage so that firing in bursts is actually effective and idiots don’t charge at you holding down the trigger.

I wouldn’t mind having a zoom option (think silenced submachine gun) for mid-range combat, especially in firefight.

A bigger clip would help a lot I think, when you’re spraying you can often need to change clip without picking up the kill.

Maybe narrow the cone of fire for the first 10 feet or so, so it’s more accurate at close range, but spreads at distance, I’m not sure how doable this is with their current weapon systems. shrug

So at medium - long range it still has the same hopeless inaccuracy as it does now (unless you pump your shots), but in close quarters it’s a pretty reliable stream of bullets. You want it to be better at close range than the DMR or whatever its Halo 4 equivalent will be.

Increasing the damage or rate of fire would give you a quicker kill, but I’m not sure that’s what’s wrong with the AR.

EDIT: Urg, had to tweak my ASCII diagram to make it display properly (it’s ignoring spaces), hopefully it still makes sense.

Here’s my idea:

  • Give it CE’s big 60 round clip.
    Kills in 22 successful impacts.
    More accurate but from medium long to long distances fire in bursts. (Grip on the gun would be logical)
    Shoots as fast as the CE AR.
    Give it a 1.5x scope to increase range of efectiveness.

It’s basically the newest model of the MA5B.

Take the Reach AR, drop the bloom by 25%, add 13 bullets, nearly double the ROF and voila.

Why would you even think that?? There is no way they would ever replace the AR with any gun unless possibly it was a new AR released in the story but I doubt they’d do that either. The SMG is a great gun that should come back but not replacing the AR. You should be able to come up with several reasons why this would never happen without even a minute of thinking.

make it a 16 bullet kill and make it much more accurate (smaller than h3’s reticule) of course keep a small amount of invisible bloom

the AR in halo reach is by far the easiest gun to use in all of the halo games. the way to make it better for gameplay would be to drastically reduce the bullet magnetism and slightly increase the damage. this would make strafing actually work to dodge the shots and help speed up the kill times a little.

make two types:

retro ar 60 bullets moderate range

recon rifle 32 bullets kinda of powerful at medium range

I have an idea I’d like to add: Give the AR three firing modes so people can easily fire in bursts.

  • There should be three firing modes:
    Full auto
    Three round burst
    Semi auto

60 clip size, and + around 7% damage increase per bullet (so a small damage increase).

clip size is needed so you can actually kill 2 people with 1 clip (derp. lol), and damage increase is needed so its actually a viable weapon to use in the first place (as opposed to reach, where its a TERRIBLE choice when you could use the STRICTLY BETTER pistol / NR / DMR).

Do not increase damage, ONLY magazine size.
