> I was under the impression that 343 had much tighter control over things like the books than Bungie did. To quote Bonnie Ross:
>
>
> > We are a purpose-built studio, we are built for Halo. One of the things I did when I first started the studio, was to make us the steward of Halo. Bungie just managed the game and then centralized groups made the books and things. I asked, as part of bringing 343 to life, to have everything under Halo.

> > For me, that was incredibly important - I wasn’t looking at just the next Halo game, I was looking at the next 20 years of Halo. When you’re thinking about it that way, you have to think about what sandbox you’re playing in, what stories you’re going to tell - I think you have to own everything. For us, it’s about how we build that universe.
Then they have no excuse for Glasslands. Sigh. 343 could’ve been a good publishing house…
> All Smart AIs deteriorate after 7 years. Cortana already flirted with rampancy when she was overburdened with Alpha Halo’s information, but Halsey helped her. The Gravemind affected her, but she was able to shut herself down and save herself. Then she spent 5 years in isolation alone with her thoughts and time for an AI is processed differently than how a human experiences it. Her going rampant isn’t a surprise, the surprise is she lasted as long as she did and as stable as she did and actually made it to 8 years.
> Because smart A.I.'s aren’t themselves and get out of control after 7 years because they are filled with so much knowledge they start to think themselves to death, either by sadness, anger, or envy. This has been known in the Halo lore since the beginning and talked about more in the 2003 novel First Strike.
I was unaware the 7 year limit on Rampancy was put in place so early in the canon. I might have cared more if I thought it was more than a hand wave. Sorry guys.
But I think right there is one of the biggest problems. Doing some research, it’s clear to me some of the more obscure parts of the Halo Universe are giving spotlight positions in Halo 4. This is great. It helps the world to feel bigger and more expansive - if I know what the heck is going on. I may have enjoyed the game more if Halo 4 offered me more of an explanation as to what the heck was going on and less sappy dialogue between Chief and Cortana. Have both if you want, but do it well, and as though treading on thin ice.
I was unaware the Didact was established as a character in 2009 and his appearance in H4 immediately resonated as “New villain cash grab,” which is unfortunate because that’s exactly what the Prometheans were. It’s not like he was portrayed any differently than the trope would, though - Space -Yoink!- in a scary costume with a messed up face controlling mindless drones and utilizing telekinesis…making comparing him to Vader nearly mandatory.
I was unaware who Lasky was and what this Infinity was until I watched Forward Unto Dawn. It would be helpful if Lasky, like, explained why they were there.
I had a vague idea of who the Storm Covenant were, but the game certainly didn’t help me with that. Just more Covenant doing nothing but getting shot at. Why did we fight the war in the first place if we’re still shooting them? I thought. After all, the game does barely anything to explain that these are just defeated fanatics. They have one line of dialogue hinting to it and that’s it. It’s almost never mentioned again. I still think the entire spectacle seemed a little contrived.
But look at me. Now this is a hate on Halo 4 thread. Sorry everyone. OT I’d like to see moar flood. I like flood.
