I love Halo Wars and I thought Halo Wars 2 was well done. I just can’t seem to find enjoyment replaying Halo Wars 2 but, I enjoy playing Halo Wars over and over again. Well here are a few things that I believe would make Halo Wars 2 fun again.
1: resources. In Halo Wars there were just supplies making building and research a breeze. It was simple yet elegant and instead of having to gather power to upgrade your made reactors to increase your tech levels. It made the game more strategic, as they also included themy within levels and they were strategic points to claim.
2: map diversity. I know I am not the only one who feels as though Halo Wars 2 maps were just copy and pastes of each other. Halo Wars had great maps and each map was unique and people had to think on their feet in order to get control of the map.
3: population counts. I feel as though the population in Halo Wars was more balanced then in Halo Wars 2. When I play Halo Wars 2 I feel as though my population isn’t right.
4: Marines. I feel as though the Marines are now just Grenadiers. I liked how they used ARs and when you used the units abilities it would inflict loads of damage.
Tell me what you would change in the game.
How is having just one resource more strategic? The dual resource system is easily the best addition to the game.
Also the population has been greatly improved from the original by allowing it to be more granular, this brings greater balance. For example marines are 3 and grunts 2, in the original 1 was for infantry but 2 was too high. So, more granularity = better balance.
I honeslty have zero reason to play this game as a PvE player. I had so much fun playing against the AI in HW1 due to the simplicity of the game as a whole. Gaining Veterancy for desired units felt very rewarding and consistent, maps felt unique with neutral NPCs added in for good variety, and Uber units actually were powerful.
Everything felt so off here in HW2 with PvE content. The AI just spams Shrouds all day as Banished and Nightingales as UNSC everytime with little to no variation. Verterancy barely has any noticeable effect on any units as far as I can tell. Maps are bland as ever, don’t need to elaborate since everyone knows what I’m talking about here. Blitz just becomes a clusterf*ck of framerate issues and P2W mechanics. Campaign felt even shorter than HW1s. Super Units here are far weaker than they look in terms of damage for the Scarab and health for the Condor.
The lack of replayability for us non PvPers is a detriment for a lot of friends I know that bought the game. Sad shame really, bought the Ultimate Edition out of hype. 343i/Creative Assembly hasn’t delivered enough content for me.
I’d just suggest whoever’s in charge of the development team to simply take more inspiration from what HW1 got right for replayability. That’s literally it.
- No disconnect issues, I honestly believe this is really hard to fix, but I’m sure it isn’t impossible, 34i and CA can take plenty of time to fix it and I’d be fine, I just hope there’s a fix - I believe HW2 improved over the original in many ways, but there’s one thing the original literally wins the gold trophy for while HW2 gets a participation medal. Maps, HW2 has pretty bad maps, keep most of them but replaying ten maps since launch gets dull. (I do like Sentry and Ashes though)! - Match making time, ok so me and my friend join Blitz open. Nobody plays that whenever I’m on and we wait thirty seconds before we find each other, I would include worse times but the thing is why’d it take so long if we were both searching, I don’t think setting up a map for the millionth time takes that long, especially a Blitz map.
-
The maps could be better, there’s not many and they kind of feel the same.
-
FFAs
-
Pickable colours.
-
A camera that can zoom closer and farther.
-
A higher population cap (for PC)
I find a lot of things need to be improved in this game. For the last few days, I’ve been playing against tons of rushers of main infantry. I’m all UNSC for Halo Wars you’ll barely catch me playing as covenant force (or banished doesn’t matter to me) leader. There has to be some increase in supply cost for certain units on both sides. Other than that they REALLY need to look at some of these Hero powers. Some are too OP and some need some adjustments. I recently did a fight with a guy who was playing Colony and it was a pain in the butt… the guy literally did 2 matches on me with rushers (yes I counter but no prevail) and he decided to be “nice” had only his hero who was fully upgraded with hunter units alongside some engineers. Was playing Jerome with medium vet force attacking for a while, then he just started to spam creating SCRAB, the problem was the guy wasn’t playing the game as serious anymore and had full upgraded hunter captain with hunters who kept healing each other over and over again. (Yes I did pretty much every trick in the book for the beginning)
So my thoughts are:
1.) Need increased cost on certain units on both sides
2.) Pop cost on certain units on both sides
3.) Look over of hero powers
4.) Look at cooldown rate and cost for powers for leaders
5.) New maps needed
That is what I think how we should improve on the game. I’m betting there is more, but I can’t really think of anything else off the top of my head. Again this is my opinion at the moment.
I think rewards for ranked would go a long way to making the game more competitive. Without something to work for, it makes every game feel really casual.
My idea would be to have blitz ranked reward skins and cool unit effects, like the flame warthog or wraith from hw1. They could even go further with just cool unit effects like flame trails behind units. Each season could release a different skin for a different unit.
All other ranked play modes reward blitz cards. This might motivate more people to buy blitz cards and in turn would fund development further. I’d hate to see the game stop being supported at some point because the population and funding isn’t there.
If blitz is just dead, they could have you unlock the skins from any mode, and give you the ability to buy the skin or effect from the shop once unlocked for something like five bucks.
Something else I think could benefit the game would be leader boards available from the game itself. I know you can check them on way point, but that’s totally different. I doubt many people check leader boards here at all, and that’s a shame. I remember playing halo wars 1 back in the day, and nearly everyone checked the boards every day or two. People would say things like, “wow that’s xxxx, he’s number one for cutter!” after we got into a game. Just a cool thing that you can track and try to climb without jumping through hoops and going on the website.
Last thing would be some kind of clan system. Clan battles would be amazing and could also offer some kind of reward for winning tournaments. This would also encourage more esport stuff and build a stronger sense of community.
The very last thing, is we should all appreciate the work the devs have put into this game. For a long time we never thought we’d see another halo wars game. Reading the forums, it’s mostly just complaints and hate, and how they should do this or that to make the game more like the original. I get it, I agree and miss things from the first game as well. The rebel bases were really cool to try to take down early with leaders, and there’s nothing like flying all over the map as prophet of regret beaming everything and running away. That game is still there whenever we feel like playing it. I think they’ve done a hell of a job balancing as many cards as they have. That’s something the first game never had. Over half the units were completely useless in nearly all situations. Let’s just enjoy ourselves and give constructive criticism without all the hate.
I can really appreciate 343 always updating balance and trying to make the game even funner than it is. I was a die hard halo wars fan but the transition to halo wars 2 is like a completely different game but that’s ok! We adapt to it, and it’s a lot of fun; however, there is an easy improvement that would make halo wars 2 a whole other lever. The maps, the game modes, all require control of the maps. Every single one, unless of course there is a major and successful bum rush, which I appreciate lol, that is the main key to winning, controlling the nodes and buying them free bases. Kind of like playing on coagulation on halo wars 1, but this is the entire halo wars 2 maps. Lets say, we had some maps with zero power nodes and some with and without free bases to claim and of course, if possible, them rebel bases? This would change styles of strategies, give other leaders the upper hand on certain maps, make things really really interesting for us especially for the procedural fellas. This means that maybe tech 2 rushing is ok… if your opponent doesn’t know it lol. But you see what I mean? I think this would make halo wars 2 f wording amazing!! Imo, maybe I’m wrong as heck

I most certainly agree with the variation of maps! It will create a bit of chaos maybe but that’s what a war is! Very brilliant idea, even for a large lizard :D.
But remember the time on halo wars 1, on chasms where your enemy base is a stone throw away? What a blast and stressful situation! Remember the flood level where there were no hooks just the far away base and supplies in the middle up for grabs? I will not go on but you see, all this is possible in halo wars 2, a game that with it’s progression, is destined to be the best game on this planet.
Player population counter.
343 just totally dropped that functionality it seems. Was in all modern Bungie Halos, and Ensemble even included it in Halo Wars 1.
Playing on Windows 10, this sentiment becomes even more pointed. Sometimes you can play Blitz within 5 minutes; sometimes you can search for 20.
I’d say lower the price. $53 for the ultimate edition is the lowest I could find, but the game isn’t going to sell more at that price point. Advertise it as a sale on GWG if they want more people to play it.
Oh, and add crossplay between PC and console, but make it so that PC users are forced to use a gamepad as their input for matchmaking, so they won’t have an advantage.
Add in a map veto system so we don’t end up on the same map 3 times in a row. It will also give me a chance to avoid highway when it comes up
A voting system would be nice for multiplayer. It gets especially annoying in Versus AI. Give us a choice, in Versus AI especially it gets old playing strongholds or domination multiple times in a row. The Map variety needs to be fixed, always seems to be the same maps. I would appreciate it if they would fix the rush style with all one unit, Even in the tips it says to diversify the army, but the AI doesn’t. I can’t tell you how many times its all hornets, Marauders, Jackrabbits or warthogs even. The AI is not very good other than a rush strategy and it gets old, easy enough to counter most of the time, but when Anti-Air isn’t powerful enough to take down all air units when you have all upgraded anti-air it is a problem.
I like the Cross-platform idea, would be good because there are not that many of us on PC, at least when I play. I mostly stick to the console easier to find people, but the game runs so much better on PC.
The connection issue problem keeps happening every so often, more noticeable when you play with a party. It will disconnect one or both players during the game. This happened to me the other day in Versus AI on console, needless to say I was the only one versus 3 AI which in turn was another loss added to my record because something connection side is broken. I have done multiple network checks on my end, with the reports of others still having this issue I’m glad I’m not the only one.
Lastly I know it’s a long shot but could we please get a flood type leader. Like a pre grave-mind or something along those lines. It would add greater variation and play ability to the game.
In a perfect world, and on a perfect console, having a high population limit would be great, but such just isn’t possible with Xbox One, because it needs that level of openness to be able to run as smooth as it does.
Smoothness is important!
Other than that, I’d want a slew of new maps with the maps that we have already only being used for Ranked, and these other variations having certain map control gimmicks like a Megacannon in the middle of the map that you have to capture from the enemy in order to use.
Or a nest where you can reverse engineer flood units to play for your team!
endless possibilities, be it levelution, Unit Production, Healing stations, anything!

The 2 resource sources are good, ish, as it stops people from rushing others
You know what can really actually help? Fog of War screen mode. I really kinda hate the fact we can see each others base in the 1st place, because one, it lets your enemy know where the heck you are, two makes them think, “Hmm lets a get rush going for the heck of it” (I’m a rush hater, its really annoying tactic and takes the fun out) and 3 well, makes you think more what needs to be done. So that’s one thing they should have and they should at least allow us to have bases at different spots like a rotation or something at least for them 2v2 maps and 3v3 ones during 1v1 matches.
