Part of the reason why we got the entire Blue Team in Halo 5 was because 343 did not want to have 4 master chiefs. This was a thing in the older Halos, although I don’t think it was necessarily complained about. Those 4 Spartans have different shield outlines, they talk to each other and many other things. Partly I think this isn’t good. You have to make part of the story about the team composition if all four characters are important main characters.
I think what made at least Halo: Combat Evolved so good is that it’s not overly complicated in ways like this. the lore is more about the mystery of this new world, and the devs shouldn’t need to be worried about getting all of the characters enough screentime that a player thinks that any line is just unimportant or filled in because “P4’s character [Who is a Computer Player in Single Player] needs to talk”.
What can 343 even do?
In Halo 3: The story gave you a (1) AI Companion that Player 2 took over. The Arbiter!
This is not recommended, it worked because the story of Halo 2 worked up these characters of Master Chief and The Arbiter, they were well-loved beforehand and it lore-wise made sense for them to work together, but I genuinely think the AI companion route is bad. Allies in older Halo games were marines who were able to die, but who had good personalities and were overjoyed to fight alongside you. This is the route I hope 343 takes. In addition, there were two additional characters who were given rich backstories to make you still feel important even if you never wore the green combat boots. They worked with the Arbiter, and thus in the campaign, but they weren’t in cutscenes and they didn’t need to take screentime.
This strategy can work. it just needs to be explained who these guys are, why they are important but not enough to be equal to the Chief and Arbiter, why they have enough combat prowess that the gameplay would be relatively the same, etc.
In Reach: You play as your multiplayer spartan, so there’s no issue of four identical people.
It’s not bad. It’s okay.
I dont think this is a big issue for most people. Who cares if there are 4 Master Chiefs, its just like that because they are giving you the common courtesy of a 4 player campaign. Personally I think we are trying to point out giant plot holes in something that they do not have to do. Just be thankful they have 4 player campaign.
I mean it would be cool if players 2 3 and 4 get to use their own spartan or even elite if they’re playable since we’re probably working with the swords of sanghelios
Halos 1, 2 and 4 all had the co-op model of Master Chief. I doubt anyone would care much if that was the case again, however i am rooting for them to put in the Arbiter at the very least, and the use of your own online spartans like Reach.
I don’t care if there are 4 MC’s in co-op. It’s a game, I don’t need everything to make sense, something like this is one of those things. It’s nice when they can have a reason to use other characters in co-op and it make sense, but it’s by no means a priority or necessary to me.

Exactly. If the story only has one one character experiencing it… then fine, have four of them. I did enjoy having random elites, reach team or blue though. Either way, you are playing your story. Enjoy the environment.
I like the idea of Player 2,3 or 4 being a member of Blue Team or something like this. I just don’t want squad mechanics and such like how Halo 5 did it. I honestly couldn’t stand the fact that there was three AI controlled players on the screen all the time if you were playing by yourself. I just wanted it to be single player but if you play with someone else then that player is say a member of Blue team or something. Pretty much how Halo 3 did it.
Something I really liked from Halo 5 was how they improved the coop experience. You could turn in, choose a different character from the team and play with them. If Halo Infinite’s storyline allows for a team then I’d go with Halo 5’s solution, otherwise I don’t really know. Like, I would be fine with 4 Chiefs, but I guess people would see it as a step backwards. They improved the coop experience once, I’m sure they can use that as a starting point to make things more interesting.

I also hope they keep the halo 5 approach as I’ve wanted to play as a squad of spartans for as long as I’ve know master chief wasn’t the last surviving spartan. Also having blue team with you fits perfectly as it makes sense for chief to be with his squad.
I agree with consensus here. I don’t need 4 different characters. I don’t have a problem playing 4 Master Chiefs (or two in Halos 1 and 2). This is just not an important issue for me personally.

I made a thread about this once a month ago I think. Its doesn’t have to be focused on entirely but to fit most people’s immersion and OCDs, I think its best they do what Reach did and make other 3 co-op players besides player 1 (Which is Master chief) your multiplayer Spartans.

I mean, it kinda makes sense since all of the Halo universe just tells you over and over and over how Spartans were meant and trained to work mostly in teams. Also this would mean the blue team coming back, which is something I really look forward to as we didn’t really get too much playtime with them in Halo 5.

A squad worked for Republic Commando but didn’t work in Halo 5: Guardians. Four Chiefs is perfectly fine for co-op, or they could go the Halo 3 route. But having six additional characters in the game that were always there, just for the purpose of co-op, weakened Halo 5’s story. The only one I cared about was Buck, but that’s purely because of ODST, and the fact it’s Nathan Fillion. The other five had no character, and played no part in the story.
If it fits the story, then go with the squad mechanics. But don’t try and make the story fit the mechanic like last time.
This paragraph is less relevant, and it’s more of something I’ve been sitting on for a while. But to be honest, I would have had Chief alone in Halo 5, and have Osiris as the squad of four. For one, the missions with Chief would be quieter, and you would have felt the impact of the loss of Cortana after Halo 4. It would have also created varied gameplay, and allowed for greater difference in mission designs. Another effect would be the player actively experiencing the power difference between a lone, decades-experienced Spartan II, and the new Spartan IVs, which would have raised the tension for Osiris completing their objective.
Lastly, I just prefer Chief being the “last” Spartan II. It makes him more badass, and gives the player a greater power fantasy, as you, as the Master Chief, are the ONLY one that can save Humanity. By Blue Team being present in the main games/main story, it weakens Chief’s feats from not only Halo 5, but also the previous main games. You, as Chief, weren’t the ONLY one that could save the day. You were just the only one there at the time. I think it makes Chief, and by extension the player, less special.
I’ve said this for a while: Player One should control the Master Chief. Players Two, Three and Four should play as their custom multiplayer Spartans. It’s as simple as that.
I did like Halo 3 where player 2 was Arbiter and 3 and 4 were elites. This setup was perfect for this game, but not sure if it would apply to future games.
I don’t want the whole blue team or Osiris team. I hated all that. Too much wasted time on characters I don’t care about.
