Longtime Halo fan here (I was one of the few people who never veto’d Snowbound, sue me haha)
I got the MCC later so didn’t partake in the H5 Beta and I have some questions for those who did.
How well did it run? And I don’t mean like the current MCC. To be honest, I see posts saying it’s fixed now, but I don’t know…
I mean, it runs much better than in my first games, but you still have to restart your search every time, I still spend time looking at searching screens for over 5 minutes once in a while.
Now I do understand that a big part of that could be that the MCC is well, abandoned… But I just want to know if the beta ran like a modern game in terms of matchmaking. There’s really no excuse for whatever’s happening in the MCC on a next gen console. So please tell me that the beta was a much better experience? I’m talking COD and Destiny (not the lag part lol) performance here. Was is pretty much consistent?
I really want H5 to have a smooth launch, my only fear would be clunky matchmaking and a significant drop in player population within the first month or so.
Matchmaking was horribly broken, even worse than MCC’s. It was both slow, and would restart itself after every crash, which it did frequently during the matchmaking process. Restarting the Beta app took something like 3-5 minutes. However, once in-game, I encountered very few (if any) issues, and it played very smoothly.
A couple crashes and occasional difficulty getting into a match, but apart from that ran very well. The only issues the game had were rooted in networking, which was fair enough at that stage.

Was that something you felt got better as the beta progressed?
Thanks for all the replies guys, keep em coming. Would be cool if we could come to somewhat of a consensus on how well it performed, more or less.

I honestly can’t remember. I played fewer games as the Beta progressed because I did worse on Eden and Regret than I did on Truth and Empire. Kept getting pwned by BR’s.
I never experienced any fatal errors or crashes but the networking was horrible, most games were on US host and so it was very laggy, the fee games where it put me on the proper Aussie host played really well.
I remember having to restart searching during my first few games, but after that everything was pretty smooth. Didn’t encounter any serious issues, nothing really lagged and had some great games with my friends
Matchmaking had an issue on occasion, but the game itself was quite smooth and worked well.
For a beta a year before launch, it performed pretty well overall.
Most people swear that it ran better than the MCC did at the time. I say “most people” because I’m not among them. It searched quickly enough, but frequently disconnected and crashed to the point where I spent longer playing Menu Simulator than I did Halo.
Honestly it was really smooth and great for me except for one issue with inviting my friends to join me. It was a little weird working the roster and getting everyone in. I think it was a bug because once I restarted the game and came back in it fixed. But other than that which didn’t happen but like once or twice, it really worked well. I didnt have to wait long for games and never crashed.
Don’t get me started on the graphics though if that’s what you mean. The bro stuff after matches had some of the flat-est looking terrain I’ve seen in a long time. Aliasing was an eye-sore.
