So I was watching a Late Night Gaming Video about the AI of Halo 5, and he was mentioning how Halo 6 needs better AI. And he’s right. Halo 5’s AI is boring and non interactive. They are more like bullet sponges than anything else. Just think of the Promethean soldiers. They stand around, teleport a couple of times, and don’t really do anything. Enemies never try to flank you. Think back to Halo 3, when you would smash off the Brute’s armor, and they would into “berserker” mode? Remember back in Halo CE, when you killed an Elite, the grunts would scatter everywhere, desperately trying to get away from “The Demon?” Or when jackals ran for their lives when their shields got shot down, and they would run for cover to recover their shields? Or in Halo CE, how an Elite would actually take cover behind a rock or other structure to recharge their shields when you brought them down? And in Halo 3, how the grunts would either run away when the leader died, or they would pull out their plasma grenades and go into suicide mode? Or a Brute Chieftain would use his hammer in an actually unpredictable type of pattern? Even in H4, when crawlers would run up walls, watchers would fly away when you damaged them, or knights teleporting when they were close to death? And so on and so on. Now, when you break down a soldier’s armor, what does it do? Screams and continues to stand there. When you take down a Covenant leader, what do grunts do? Run away a few feet and continue to shoot at you. In LNG’s video, he mentioned a quote from a 343 employee, who said that 343 wouldn’t work on the AI much because “that’s not what sells games today.” Now I bet the development for H6’s campaign is sitting in their office, scratching their heads thinking, “hmm, how can we make a good H6 campaign. We’ve already screwed up all of these characters, and the whole Cortana plot twist doesn’t seem to be very popular, so how can we make H6’s campaign better?” I’m also betting that most Halo fans want a better campaign than H6. There are an infinite amount of ways to improve the campaign of H6. Now if they can’t make a great story out of H6 based on H5, then what we can do is make the gameplay engaging. First of all, we need better AI. That will make the campaign engaging and challenging, not running through corridors shooting immovable objects. Secondly, we need WAY less linearity. H5’s campaign was so linear it hurt. It would force you to use vehicles. For example, that part when you’re Chief and you are using the Phaetons, that was forced down your throat and you couldn’t use it how you wanted. If 343 needs an example of open and nonlinear environments, just take a look at Halo CE’s “Assault on the Control Room.” That mission is a perfect example. And you know why? Cause we have CHOICES. You can save any Marine squadron you want, use whichever weapon, and whatever vehicle. You don’t want to use a Scorpion, use a Ghost. Or a Banshee. Or just go on foot. It isn’t, “use this Phaeton because the Kraken is over a canyon and if you don’t use a flying vehicle then you will fall and also use the Phaeton to take out the immovable gunners because going onto the Kraken without doing so will screw you over.” Another great example is H3’s Scarab fights. You can use a tank. Or a hornet. Or use a Gausshog, or a mongoose, or go onto the Scarab and take out the core, or take out it’s legs. That is an example of choice. We don’t want to go down corridors and fight motionless enemies. We don’t want to be restricted by what the game gives us. Guys, if you want H6 to be good, SAY IT! If we don’t voice our opinion, we won’t get a good Halo game. We need to be vocal. That is why I urge the Halo community to be on the forum. This is the only way we can tell 343 what we want. This is the only way we can make a better Halo game. We can’t just leave everything to 343. It is clear that they need guidance. That is not an insult. But they seem to lack the understanding of what made Halo great. So please, if you really are a Halo fan, you will get involved.
