How to use the AR outside of Team Slayer

T4R
how?

if i spray, no bullets hit

if i do short bursts, i can’t get the kill in time (meaning, i get killed before they get killed)

how?

  1. Switch to a Magnum

  2. Ditch the AR when you can for power weapons and/or DMR/NR

  3. Profit

-In my own experience and opinion.

answer my question

i’m not an idiot,
i know that the DMR exists, but i choose not to use it for close-range engagements

Exactly

So ditch it anyways since the Magnum is more useful for close encounters. Can also use shotty/sword for CQC as well.

The sad part of the AR is that it’s beaten in it’s own niche. Otherwise i would give you tips on how to use it effectively. It’s not a very effective gun and I’ve played more enough games being forced to use it “appropriately” ala AR starts.

How to use the AR outside Team Slayer: Don’t.

No, but seriously. Just wait until H4. They’ve said the AR is more powerful in Halo 4, and even thought the Title Update did buff the AR in Reach slightly, it’s still pretty useless compared to the Magnum, which you spawn with as a sidearm.

Only time I ever use it is at the beginning of Invasion, where you have literally no other choice.

At a distance: Short Burst until shields drop then full auto to waste em

At close range: full auto till shields burst, then melee

How to use the AR: Drop it for the first weapon you see.

I am assuming your issue is either:

A) Your aim is off

or

B) You’re not strafing

Short-bursts, aim, and strafe.

  1. Shoot at enemy.
  2. Switch to DMR or any perscion weapon you have.
    2a. Throw a gernade.
    2b. Don’t have both melee.
2c. Don’t have anything well bye.
  3. Shoot right at the head.
    3a. Hope gernade hits.
3b. Hope he runs and doesn’t fight back and melee him.
    3c. Respawn and get revenge.
  4. You win.

Real controlled burst’s I’ve killed people at a distance with the AR that you would need the DMR to make the shot with because I ran out of DMR ammo. It’s completely possible to kill them with the assualt rifle 3 bullet bursts keep the bloom down and they’ll hit on the mark every time.

Strafe. If you’re using the AR, it’s going to come down to whoever misses the most bullets. But the best strategy is don’t use the AR. If you’re close enough that the AR is effective, then you’re increasing your chances of a trade. Pick up a DMR or use your pistol and don’t let the other guy get into spray distance. If there is more than one enemy and you use the AR you are pretty much dead. Your best bet is to not get into close combat unless you have a Shotgun or Sword; the AR is a great spray and pray weapon, but most of the time it’s a couple bullets that decides if you live or die. If there’s more than one enemy then you are going to die, regardless.

If you also want an edge at close range, switch to the Bumper Jumper button layout. You can jump and punch while still aiming - if you can learn to use that effectively, you will win most of your close range 1v1s.

Long story short, Bumper Jumper, and try not to let enemies get close enough that using the AR is the best choice, because it will always be a Pyrrhic victory.

The Title Update did nothing to the Assault Rifle.

You wanna know how to use it? Experience.
It only takes me 1 clip from the AR to down a guy, that’s pretty low amount of rounds for me, if you can’t use it, that’s your problem, but It’s way better than the DMR in some instances.
(This is if you know how to use it and are fairly experienced.) You can’t just jump into a match and start using it to it’s capability like the DMR.
I would like to request a separate game type with just ARs and nothing else, it would get people’s skill with the weapon up and learn to appreciate it as the rugged, trusty rifle it was made to be.
