I know that you have to unlock them with certain commendations and challenges but where can I find these at and how to do them?
From what I’ve seen so far it takes master commendations to unlock armor. You can see your progress and all of the commendations if you press start, go up and select the commendations tab.
From there, I’ve noticed most of the ones for armor unlocks are: Player->War Games.

It does not show the ones it takes to unlock the armor.
when you scroll over the locked armor, it should say which one you have to master in the prerequisites ie. splatter master to unlock verdent visor. you just have to do something in that commnedation and then the armor should be viewable.
You have to get the first level of a commendation to be able to see the requirement of getting the Master commendation to open that piece of armor. If it says Novice under a Commendation, then the armor won’t show up.
How long does it take to get master on a commendation…?
