This may make me look stupid, but could someone guide me step by step through the process of starting the download? Having trouble finding out how to initiate it
are you talking about the patch or the game it self?
The game itself? What’s in the patch?
multiplayer and fixes I assume, did you buy the game from the marketplace or did you get a code from say the collectors edition or console?
I got the collector’s edition console. I thought there would be an option to download the digital copy somewhere, the guy in the shop didn’t mention a code…
if you bought it from the market place all you need to do is go to the store, go to halo 5 guardian’s and click install, if you used a code then you go to my games and apps scroll all the way to the right to your “ready to install” list find halo 5 guardian’s and click install
yeah you have to go to the store and click on use a code then type in the code it should automatically start downloading as soon as you enter the code the code is in the steel book case along with all the other extra items
You won’t have to worry about the patch if you have the digital edition. As the main game you’ll be downloading will already have the patch applied. To start the download to to my games and app, tab over to your games waiting to install and find halo 5. Then you just need to tap the “A” button on Halo 5 and press install. Also if you have DLC for it (if you got the digital deluxe version) then you just need to manage your game and you’ll see available DLC you can install. 
this is under the assumption you’ve already redeemed a digital Halo 5 code
Ok I’ve found the use a code section…looking through the metal box here, the only 25 letter code I can see is the one for an Xbox live trial. I’m blind as a bat though 
its like a booklet with the headsets and controllers in it the code for the game is on the back of it you will need to scratch of the back with a coin
go to the games tab on the market place. The last option to the left should be something like “enter game code” or something like that. Just type in the code and you should be set.

Update: It’s now ‘installing’, will it show a percentage installed or not? I’m just paranoid something is going to go wrong!
