How to rank up in halo 4: A CSR GUIDE

Hello, I have decided to post about how to effectively rank up in the various playlists in halo 4 as there seems to be an underlying confusion regarding the ranking system. I’m going to be breaking down the different schemes used to calculate ranks and how to effectively rank up as per the schemes. I have two fifties at the moment and plan on going for more when I get the time. So let’s get into the details.

There are two types of ranking schemes implemented in the halo 4 CSR ranking system, these are individually based ranks and team based ranks.

We’ll cover team based ranks firstly as it is by far the easiest to explain.
The term team based ranks basically means that “the likelihood of you increasing your rank is down to your teams performance during the match”. Expressed in an even simpler manner, these playlists are based SOLELY on whether your team won or lost the match. As a side note k/d does not matter and neither does your score at the end of the game, it is purely whether you won or lost the match.

The playlists in which “Team based” ranks apply is as follows:

  • Big Team Skirmish
(This is the replacement for Team objective, which used team based ranking)
  • Team Doubles
  • Capture the flag
  • Team Throwdown
  • Dominion
  • Grifball
  • DLC playlists

(Feel free to post a correction if these are wrong or need updating)

Tips for getting your 50 in these playlists: Well all you have to do really is keep winning. If you continuously win you will see your rank shoot up. So if you have a good team of friends who also want to rank up recruit them and start winning. As an additional note to this, your chances of ranking up are increased if you are versing opponents of similar or higher ranks. If you keep beating unskilled players continuously you WILL rank up, however it will take significantly longer in comparison to versing higher ranked players.

Ok moving on to the individually based ranks!

The individually ranked playlists are as follows:

  • Big Team Infinity Slayer
  • Infinity Slayer
  • Legendary Slayer
  • SWAT
  • Team Action Sack
  • Flood
  • Regicide
  • Team Snipers
  • Multi Team

Individually based ranks refer to the above playlists and how well you perform in comparison to EVERYONE IN THE GAME, your performance (as far as CSR is concerned) is based SOLELY ON POINTS. I cannot make this clear enough.

A quick note: Individually ranked playlists have nothing to do with you’re K/D, or whether or not you won or lost the game. It is entirely based on score. An example, if you have the highest score in the game, say 500 points, but your team lost. You will place first. NOT fifth as the waypoint website indicates. Again, if you go 20-0, but you are outscored by your team mates or the opposition you will not necessarily rank up and could possibly rank down.

OK so now that we have that clear. We can move onto ways to improve your overall score!

To clarify your score is based on the number of medals you receive whilst playing, more medals = more points. A good tip for scoring high is to maximize the number of medals you receive in a match and we’ll go through how to do that right now!

Have a look at your medals after the game and what they are worth. Here are a few tips/tricks that will net you a few more points.

  • Shoot at any enemy you can see, racking up assists can be the difference between scoring first and second, an assist medal is worth 5 points, so ten assists per game will net you an extra 50 points

  • Assassinate enemies (With the animation NOT beat down), these are worth 15 points rather than 10 for a Melee or a Beat Down medal if you can get away with it, I highly recommend animating your opponents

  • Snapshot, although this seems hard for some, for others it comes really easily. A snapshot counts as both a sniper kill AND a snapshot kill. That nets you a nice 20 points for every snapshot. (Maps like Abandon, Haven and Adrift all have global sniper rifles and should be utilized where possible) Promethean vision gives a significant advantage when snapshotting as it can be used to determine your enemies movements and get a predictive snapshot ready.

  • Multikills, these are bonuses, for SWAT, they are critical. If you want a 50 in SWAT go for multikills. Double and Triples are worth 5 points each and as your multikill increases so will your points.

  • Loadouts, (This only applies to Big Team Infinity and Team Infinity as ordinance is not prevalent in every I.R. Playlist) now if you wish to maximise your points in a game you want to be choosing Requisition and Ordinance Priority. Calling down an ordinance is worth 5 points. So if you can call down 3 in a game, you’re scoring more than someone who calls down one or two. Don’t forget, your ordinance is also dependent on your points, so chaining your ordinance with more points is crucial. Requisition allows you to re-roll for a better ordinance. As an example, you get your first ordinance, re-roll to get a beam rifle. If you snapshot with that beam rifle, it is possible to get your next ordinance with 50% left in your Beam Rifle. This type of ordinance chaining will help you score above 300 points most games.

  • Generally for individually ranked playlists it is better to play alone and limit communication to your team. This is a very D-bag way of playing halo, and I don’t agree with it or like it, but it is the most effective way to rank up. As people are not stealing your kills etc etc etc. I have found through experience that playing with 50’s in a team is detrimental to you ranking up. It took me 2 games at the top of the board to go from 48-49 in infinity, then I played 15 games with a team and didn’t rank up. Two games alone again and I had my 50.

The reason for this is simple, If you want to rank up to a 50 you need to top the board consistently, and be beating people of a higher rank. If you are playing with a team of people and coming second or third in some games then topping the next 5, you probably won’t go up. It roughly works like this…

If you place 1st or 2nd you are most likely going to rank up, 3rd place and lower than that and you’re either staying the same or going down. This is very evident at high level CSR.

Ok so that about wraps it up, remember a few of these tips and you should be ranking up. This will NOT improve how you play halo, this will only help you score higher in the long run!

Anyway, remember to have fun and enjoy Halo

Valeyn.

EDIT: Also try to avoid join in progress at all costs. As you’re generally already at a point deficit going into the match.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they implemented a system that valued positive contribution instead of ignoring anything negative you do?

It would be nice, I had hopes that Legendary be slayer would be team ranked, but alas it’s not :frowning: Long gone are the good old days of halo. Sorry.

As someone who plays alone, I’m not a big fan of the win/loss system either.

My understanding of the Halo 2/Halo 3 systems is that they took into account whether you won or lost, where you placed on your team, what your spread was, how many assists you had… basically how much of a positive or negative impact you had on your team.

Its like quarterback rating as a stat. It takes into account so many things that you can’t really define what it is, you just know it does a pretty good job of evaluating impact.

343i said that Multi-Team uses team based csr so you have to win if you want to rank up.

Well, I would like to believe them in that. But I have been able to rank up in multi team without playing the objective at all. So it is kind of contradictory to that, the best advice I can give for multi team is to play to win as you will accumulate medals based off the objective. Hill defences, odd ball carrier etc. I did a quick look around the internet and found this guide

Hats off to the guy for an in depth coverage of CSR. I took no material from his post and all credit goes to him, I am only posting regarding my experience with the game.

If you’re going to play multi team, be a team player and play to win.

So I’ve been looking through the Halo forums talking about the Halo 4 CSR and I want to appreciate you for explaining how it works, but I am currently at CSR 47 and planning to spend my spring break playing Halo 4, I’m probably 50 wins away or something like that, I sometimes reach 1st or 2nd place which I get very lucky but when I lose games based on my teams performance, I don’t necessarily rank down, but instead I stay on my rank because of my “pro skills” or maybe how it works. Thanks
