How to make matchmaking faster

Since launch the matchmaking in Halo: The Master Chief Collection has improved. When once I got into three games in sixteen continuous hours of waiting, game relaunching and console restarting, now we have something more acceptable in terms of a between match interval. However, I feel this could be faster.

The simple fix would involve allowing players to Vote for a rematch by opting to Press (Y) to Swap spawn positions on an already loaded map, some dropout may occur requiring matchmaking to fill in the gaps, but I believe most people would stay to have a chance to beat the opponents that just beat them or to demonstrate their superiority. Due to there only being a pair of spawn positions for two teams on every map there wouldn’t be any point offering this option for a subsequent rematch. Once is enough.

The complex fix, which is far harder to describe, would involve removing players ability to Vote on gametypes in all Halo titles (except Halo 2 Anniversary). This would mean that Halo 1-4 would each automatically load the next Social Slayer map in some predefined sequence chosen by 343i whilst simultaneously finding players for it. There would be more than one of these map rosters to cycle through admitting new players in a staggered succession as otherwise you would have to wait up to 15 minutes for every match to finish if they admitted players in clockwork synchrony. Those wanting the option of a Social Objective match would have to Press (X) to Party Up with people on their side and then lead them into a Custom Game of their choosing which if successful could eventually lead to them adding them to their Friends list for convenience now that they knew that they liked a similar aspect of the same Halo title and conducted themselves in an appropriate manner.

As it is the playlists available in the UI divide the server population up too much and I suspect many flit from one to another having waited a while, but not quite long enough, and incorrectly assumed that that playlist is unpopular rather than those who are in it are mainly mid-game. It would be a shame for the same fate to befall this as did Titanfall - which made the mistake of having far too many playlists doing similar things (e.g. you don’t need Attrition and Hardpoint when you can play Hardpoint and ignore captures completely as if you were playing Attrition and every Objective gametype could have been lumped together in rotation under the Variety Pack: Last Titan Standing, Pilot Hunter, Capture The Flag).
