How to kill an Elite?

I’ve gone through HALO:Reach twice in normal mode now, and I’m slowly getting better at it (haven’t really played any shot’em-ups for about ten years).

But now I’m about to try heroic. Very soon one meets three white Elites and two red (or was it gold?) Elites. I didn’t stand a chance, especially with the BB gun I had! All five of them (plus a couple of grunts, which are quite easy to kill if it wasn’t some Elites covering them) keept shooting at me, and as soon as I got one of them in front of my gun, it sidestepped and kept shooting at me so fast, I died before I could find it again :frowning:

I have max life, full set of granades and even tried a gun from a grunt and another gun (can’t remember it’s name, their form of light machine gun - a blue and white one which overheats if shoot to long) but nothing seemed to help.

I even had problem with them in normal mode, but eventually I got each and every one of them as long as I didn’t leave them be to resharge their force shield… But in heroic, there’s just to many of them to handle with my limited technique…

Is there a trick or magic on how to kill them that someone might care to share?

If you went through on Legendary first, it would have been a walk in the park! XD

Anyway, I’d first try luring one of them around a/the corner, shooting him with an overcharged Plasma pistol, then get a headshot off him with a precision weapon (Sniper rifle, Needler Rife, DMR, etc.) Try going for one of the Ultras (White) first, because they have more armor. Zealots (red) are weaker. If its a General (Gold), it will have as much shield as an Ultra. They both have strong shields.

Of course, I’d consult a professional. There are many mission walkthroughs around on youtube, probably a Heroic one as well.

Try this, you’d be amazed at what you can learn.

Here are a few tips that I can provide you.

First, eliminate the Covenant’s ability to overwhelm you with firepower. So I would recommend first taking out the grunts that are with the Elites. Grunts alone will probably not take you out, but they have a nasty habit of reducing your shields so that the Elites will. If you are not good at taking out the Elites yet, then go for the quick kill first. The fastest way to down a grunt that I know of is using a nicely placed headshot. To encourage headshots, I typically turn on the “Grunt Birthday Party” skull. With this skull, headshots cause the grunt to explode in confetti and you will hear a celebration cheer. It’s fun.

Next, use cover when possible. Become an expert with your precision weapons and use the corners to your advantage. Duck out and take a few shots…then drop back and reload. Repeat until you drop that Covey. And remember to duck behind crates and boxes if you need to, especially if your shields go down. Know where the health packs are located, just in case. But basically wait behind that cover until your shields are fully recharged. Then you continue your attack.

Now if you like to stick plasma grenades on your foe, remember that Elites have pretty good shields at higher ranks. If fact, there were a few times when I’ve found myself in a pickle because the grenade was only able to take down the shield. So if you enjoy sticking it to your opponents, either take out its shield first or finish the attack off with something like a rifle.

And don’t underestimate the power of a vehicular mounted weapon. A turret is a very fast way to take out any Covenant opponent. Personally, I’m a fan of the Ghost, because you have controllable firepower and mobility.

But the thing that helped me most in Reach was using the custom firefight. It’s a great way to set up personal training programs. First, you can control what enemies appear in each waves, so you can really learn how a particular one reacts. Second, you can adjust the shields, the ammo, and health of everyone in the firefight. So say you want to practice getting your timing down for firing a weapon (what I call the “tap timing”), then give yourself unlimited shields and ammo. Then, you don’t have to worry about the dying. Focus instead on your quick aim and how to fire properly. But what if you want to improve your dodging skills instead? Then give the Covenant unlimited shields and reduce yours. Believe me, you will have to learn quickly how to get out of the way then.

At any rate, I’m sure you will become a great warrior in no time.

Couldn’t have phrased it better myself.

Shot it.

There you go.

Ok, I kind’a already figured that out, but I’ve always left the grunts to last because they’re so easy to kill :). Guess I have to do it the other way around then, thanx!

Indeed! I found the skulls for my second run through and that was quite cool!

> Next, use cover when possible.

Ahh, this is my big problem currently. I get so excited when there’s so many enemies around, I forget to check my health until it’s to late and there’s no time to get out of the way of all the shootings :frowning:

Sometimes, most by luck, I managed to stick them with a granade and then take them out with a burst of bullets. To bad one can only carry to sticky granades…

Indeed, same here!

Thanx, I’ll have a look at that!

Always take a vehicle, utilize the plasma pistol overcharge on elites, the plasma pistol regular shot on brutes, the needler and needle rifle on brutes, anything on grunts, and make sure to conserve your grenades. I have finished Reach on Legendary, and the only truly hard level is PoA.

Man, that Engineer, Fuel-Rod Elite with the Elite with the Energy Sword . . . took me so long to beat PoA. But after I finished doing so Legendary solo, it felt so rewarding.

The sword Elite just walked off the Spire on my LASO run. It was amazing.

How many deaths did you guys end up with on each level?

I’d steer away from automatic weapons on Heroic or Legendary (exept the needler, but that runs out quickly). First of all, kill all the weaker enemies right away to prevent a rain of plasma on you. Then, like others are saying, use a charged plasma pistol to knock out shields and then use a precision (DMR, magnum, needle rifle, ect.) to get a headshot. You could use other weapons to drain their shields, but it takes longer and it uses a lot of ammo. Don’t go in the open - let them come to you.

I personally don’t use the sniper often because I’m not good with it, and it takes 2 or 3 shots to kill an elite on a hard difficulty. The needle rifle is great because it is relatively common and can blow up enemies that don’t have shields in 3 shots (doesn’t need to be in the head). It’s really useful for brutes or elites without shields, but don’t use it to drain the shields because then it’s not very affective. Also, it can help you if your about it die because if you shoot it at any enemy they will tend to try to dodge it by jumping out of the way, giving you a chance to escape!

Plasma weapons are ideal for popping Shielded targets (mostly Elites but Brute Chieftains have them too), so always carry one as a backup when carrying standard weapons. While Overcharging a plasma pistol is effective, simply firing a couple of rounds is even more so (since Elites have a nasty habit of evading charged shots). If plasma pistols aren’t available, try the Plasma rifle (for the higher damage) rather than the plasma repeater. Remember, headshots are your best friend. An unshielded Elite will die in one headshot, regardless of how much health it has. When getting up close and personal, strafe to the right. Chances are, his initial melee will miss you, leaving you primed for an assassination/beat down.

Funny you should mention him. During my LASO run, he was probably the single worst Elite I’ve ever met. Here’s what happened:

  1. Elite walks over to a wall, fires FRG, hits self.

  2. Because of shields, survives. Proceeds to throw plasma grenade. Grenade hits wall, falls and Elite evades away.

  3. Returns to same spot, hurls another plasma (where do they keep them, I wonder). Sticks himself.

  4. Infuriated, Elite switches to sword, charges and melees my hologram (which I placed beside the wall I was hiding behind). Hologram disappears, Elite switches to FRG.

  5. Fire another Hologram. Elite melees (with his gun). I charge out with a sword. Elite melees me (survived), circle-strafe. Elite then winds up with a sword in his back.

I actually have this video on my file share if you want to see it. I’m just not sure how to upload it to this site (if there is a way).

That Elite jacked my Banshee that I (purposely) jammed into the entrance. I then boarded the (now hostile) Banshee and Falcon-kicked him off the Spire.

Check out Mythic Tyrant or Naked Eli’s channel for help. I recommend just PP overcharge followed up by a headshot on the elites. Also try to quickly headshot the greunts for afar earlier for less damage being taken. Also when you kill an elite, backstrack tot the last checkpoint to ensure it will stay dead.
