How to improve my game?

Hey guys,
This is the first question I have asked on here so please be gentle. I played Halo Wars 1 to death and so I preordered Halo Wars 2 and picked it up the day it came out. However, since then I haven’t been playing it consistently because of exams and other important things. However, now I am willing to put in the time and effort to get good and improve myself while it’s in its prime. It would be helpful if you guys could point me in the right direction. As you can see my win rate is 66%. So I’m trash but not awful to the point I make others cry. Anyway, what do you guys suggest to help me? What are some good Youtube channels? What’s currently in the meta and should I follow it? When should I scout? and finally what are some good openers?

Any other tips and tricks would be helpful too. My goal is to get to Onyx during a season. If anyone wants to run 2v2s with me or do some 1v1s against me that would be great. Thanks for your help guys. (Again this is my first post in the community so be gentle.)

First off, welcome to the forums.

I think the best way to get better, honestly, is to lose. Not on purpose or anything but seeing what other people are doing is a decent way to find out what works. Even if you win, just let each game be a learning experience on what you could have done better or what your opponent(s) did well.

When to scout: if you’re ever unsure of what your enemy is up to. Never assume they will do something. It’s a solid guess, for example, to assume that Arbiter will build Elite enforcers. But it’s important to find out how many he has, where they are, and what his mini bases have on them.

I’ll post more tips later when I’m not using my phone to post. Good luck and welcome.

Hello! Welcome to the community!

Good YouTube channels to watch are TruthSOSeeker, Breaking the Clutch, and Nakomura. You should also watch RTS Yoda Vids stream, he’s one of the top two players in the game.

The meta currently is Jerome for UNSC, and really any leader for the Banished. Cutter is also very viable, Isabel can be but she’s kinda a one trick pony. If you’re playing an Arbiter be prepared for an Enforcer rush. Also you should make sure to build a hero in most situations, they’re really powerful currently. Some more than others but they are all at least useful.

If you want to scrim in 1v1s I’m game, just message me beforehand.

build a turret. it stops scout and only costs 300 supply. you cant beat that.

Twitch, he does it pretty consistently

you can just build marines until champion.

Flayerr (Gaming4ever) is also consistent on YouTube, TruthSOSeeker stopped uploading a while ago.

I don’t have much time now so I can’t really drop a huge knowledge bomb here, but I’d like to point out that 66% is not a bad winrate at all. A lot of high Champion players are in that range, if the competition is steep it’s pretty normal. Winrate isn’t as representative in this game as others because the harder your opponents get the more constant it will hold.

I was going to say some suggestions on how to improve but your 66% victory rate is actually probably better than mine  I guess feel free to study the build orders and game histories of the people you lose to here on Waypoint to understand their methods?

Good channels to check out are Breaking the Clutch and (sometimes) team respawn. My advice is be aware of your army and eco at all times. Almost always spend your resources on something, it’s a huge waste to stack them up without reason. Second, don’t be so concerned about your army staying alive, sometimes it’s best to sacrifice your stuff to keep the game going. Third, check the forums for tips and stuff. I used to be garbage at this game but I’ve asked for tips numerous times and am improving greatly. Lastly, come up with a build that suits you initially, then scout your opponent and counter theirs. Say you both want to reach tech 2 really fast, take the opportunity to rush your opponent. Hope some of this helps and I’m always up for questions. If you need a teammate I also play somewhat commonly only on Xbox though

This person has the right idea, study some top player’s game histories and build orders, that will help you get a general idea of what works well

Howdy.
Just play a lot, watch lots of videos, and check here every now and again, or post questions here.

Im always down for 2s, if you need a partner

Thank you. I’ll try to scout for frequently because I reckon that has lost me a lot of games.

I will for sure check those guys out. I didn’t think much of RTS Yoda because from what I’ve heard and seen I didn’t think he was a good player, but, if you’re saying he’s right up there I will for sure check him out. Also, is Atriox in the meta? I pretty much play exclusively as Cutter and I don’t think that’s too great so I might give Atriox a spin if he’s viable.

Thanks, mate. I already watch TeamRespawn even though they actually aren’t that good. lol. However, they are quite funny and that’s also a bonus. I’ll scout for sure, I think it might be one of the most important factors in winning a game.

Thanks for all the replies, strategies and tips everyone. I do believe the Halo Wars 2 community is one of the least toxic ones out there, at least on these forums anyway. I will ask you guys to a game sometime. One last question though, how crucial are power nodes? Do I really need them or are they a waste?

Power nodes may seem very slight in effect but in the long run they will help you boost your eco by quite a bit. They’re pretty easy to cap early game as it only requires 3-4 core infantry, less if you micro them well. I recommend power nodes especially if you’re rushing or just don’t have lots of power buildings.

Your win rate is fine, play & you will learn. First time into onyx/champion is a grind but then easy to place back…:+1:t2::ok_hand:

the best time to scout is when your base is building up, but you havent decided on which of the 3 core units you want to base your army around. so basically after you’ve secured your income and before you’ve placed a barracks/hall/etc. or built up an army to rush. go see what your opponent has put on their first base. if they’ve spawned a barracks/hall you can pretty much expect a brute/flamethrower rush. if they have an armory or whatever they’ll be building a hero. when you get to tech 2 scout to see what your opponent decides to build. if they have a vehicle or air unit building and how many they have on each base. it also helps to find out where your opponents forces are stationed so you can use your aoe ability to remove hvt units.

I’ll play 1s with you, just add me.
This game is mainly broken down into stages Early, Mid, and Late.I’ll break them down hope it helps

  • Early game is when the game starts to tech 2 - Mid game is from the beginning of tech 2 to when you or your opponent has extensive economy (2 or more full bases) - Late game is after 2 full bases with booming economyEarly game - Get resource above all, figure out where the resources are use your Marines/Grunts you start with to gather near by stockpiles and use scouts (Ghost/Choppers/Jackrabbits) remember more resources MORE UNITS! - Scout the enemy! Are they going fast tech?(2 or more Generators) Do they have more then 1 base? Are they Rushing?(Barracks/Raid Camp/Summit) Are they getting power nodes? How many base infantry do they have? How many scouts? - Build your army according to your opponents. - Take map control (power nodes, and drive your opponent back to their base. (DO NOT OVER COMMIT) meaning don’t follow them to their base unless you know you can win. just settle for map control for now. Mid game - This is where your anti-opponent ball comes in. You want to make the cheapest and yet effective army you can. Choose your units according to what you know from your scouts remember Nightingales are necessary but Banished air support is not. Extra info on counter units Anti-Infantry(Snipers/Elite Rangers) Anti-Air(Wolverines/Reavers) Anti-Vehicle(Cyclops/Hunters) - Since you made cheap units you can steam roll your economy and be a beast. I usually try to have 5 Adv. Generators try to get tech 3 fast if your UNSC - Upgrade Units Infantry level 1, 2 etcLate game - You have booming economy now and map control through out the game now lets build building killers (Locust/Vultures/ODSTs) - Deal damage but don’t worry about killing the base(obviously do it if possible) Hit and run is usually safer. - UNSC tech 3 upgradesSide Notes - Stay away from building Air. Infantry are the cheapest units and as such the best early and mid game vehicles are kinda in the middle quite a bit of resources but not too bad they split the cost between supplies and power. Air is the most expensive and is not viable. A lot of people believe in Air but I can tell you from experience its not worth it. For example lets break down Reavers vs Banshees just with resources. With 5000 supplies and 5000 Power how many population could you get out of these units. Well a Banshee is 300/0 for 3 pop otherwise 100/0 per pop so you could make 50 population of Banshees(16 Banshees). Now Reavers are 175/225 for 5 pop or 35/45 per pop. Which means you could make 111 pop with that amount of supplies. (22 Reavers) It takes roughly 8 Reavers(1400/1800) to kill 16 Banshees(4800/0) - Scouting is important don’t over look it - Scouts are usually the way to go early game mobility, sight, and no hard counter early game. Where as Suicide grunts, Snipers, and Flamethrowers kill infantry. - Picking a good leader UNSC choices Jerome or Cutter. Banished anything but Colony  Shipmaster and Jerome being the top 2. Jerome being #1 - Late game Locust + Teleport is unbeatable

Thank you! So much information to take in. I’d love to play against you and pick up some skills. I don’t really trust myself with rushing so perhaps I can try to stall and bring it into the midgame. In the early game, I might just focus exclusively on map control. I usually go infantry then air but if you’re saying they aren’t actually viable that might be my letdown. I think I’ll play around a little for with Shipmaster but why isn’t Colony viable? He seems like a fairly alright leader. If it gets into the late game I often go all out on bases and that often leaves me open. Attacking generator is a much better option I think.

Thanks for all the help. I think I’ll hope into a match now.

Also another heads up, I like to build a scout unit right away or after I have to pads/harvesters down. You’ll notice a very large or cylindrical stack of power in the middle of the map (1s & 2s), or to one of the far sides (3s only), send yours scout unit to pick this power stack up. It’ll give you a great boost to your starting eco
