I doubt that I am the only person to have noticed that the three Warzone maps have a lot of open spaces which make medium to long range weapons, and vehicles dominate over close quarters combat. Personally, I prefer medium to long range combat, but I see this being unfair, and even makes spending REQ cards for close quarters weaponry a rare option. I have thought about this for a while and I believe I have come up with a way to make this work. I believe that one of the main concerns that people would have is that more close quarters means smaller maps. This is not necessarily true. One way to make this possible would be to have a large city space. A perfect example of this would be something like New Mombasa from Halo 3: ODST, or imagine an extended version of the Arena map, Plaza. There would of course still need to be enough space for vehicles to have some maneuverability and be effective purchases, but I definitely feel the more complex terrain would make for an interesting Warzone match.
If you are capturing the objectives, it is VERY close quarters.

True, but if you are gearing up to capture an objective by using a REQ card suited for close quarters, you must be at a location that you already have captured. Then in order to reach a location that you are trying to capture, in the current three maps available, you will inevitably need to cross an open space which puts you at a disadvantage. There have been so many times I purchased a shotgun, SAW, or energy sword, only to leave it in the middle of an open area between my base and the objective because anyone with a BR could take their time to pick me off. If people worked together well enough I could have cover fire on my way, but that rarely ever happens. Ultimately, my point isn’t that close quarters combat never happens, but this type of map could definitely be a more more viable strategy. Also, if the map is balanced correctly, long range weapons and vehicles could still be viable as well, but the goal is to make them less over powering.
I definitely agree with you but it’s not just close quater power weapons that I lose to open spaces.

> I definitely agree with you but it’s not just close quater power weapons that I lose to open spaces.
Of course not, but if you’re leaving East Armory on Apex to take the Spire, and you see an enemy on the hill with a BR, would you rather have a Railgun or a Shotgun? Either way you are at a sever disadvantage, but at least with the Railgun, you could potentially kill them.
I’m just saying that the amount of open spaces are significantly greater than the amount of close spaces, and there is nothing wrong with that. This is simply a suggestion for an alternative map design, and how I believe it would ultimately impact the overall play style compared to the current play style. Maybe I should have worded the title differently.
It’s long range until you hop into a scorpion and start feeling claustrophobic, and that you may be hijacked by some guy camping out waiting for you

To be honest, I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying, but I am going to try and interpret. Being in a Scorpion is definitely better if you have a lot of open space because it is slow, has poor maneuverability, has a slow fire rate. If you were in close-r quarters, it would definitely be easier for someone to potentially hijack/destroy your vehicle, and harder for you to react to, just about everything. I acknowledge that this basically puts Scorpions at a disadvantage, and it ultimately may not be wise to call one in on this type of map. In my opinion that should be actually be the goal. Understanding when a different tactic is strong and when it is weak should be something that different maps are designed to emulate. The fact that the same tactics work for all three of the maps currently available is what inspired this post to begin with.
Well, it looks like there is going to be an Urban Warzone map in this next patch, so hopefully my prayers have been answered.

I suspect that the new map will use the same general design philosophy as the others. I’d rather see CQC-focused players go the arena than have the warzone formula changed. I feel like all of Halo is designed for people who like small, fast maps and lots of in-your-face game play. All I ask is one space within the Haloverse where I can BR camp and not have to constantly be worried that I’ll be assassinated. And that would be warzone.
Swords and shotguns are crazy powerful and don’t cost a a lot I don’t know what your talking about Maybe you just need to change playstyle defend bases with your shotgun and when you get 4req back grab a camo then go close
Or even grab the speed armor mod to get in the face of the enemy
And the most important play with good players and a full party
Its not the same game when you run with a 12man party
You get to attack the core more often and always have teamates around you Its 80%close combat
To me it would seem that it really just depends on your play style. If you play it long/mid ranged then you should definitely use those longer ranged weapons. Or, if you play the objective, you can use all of those closer range weapons.
You could use a scout warthog to get to the enemy armory safely or sneak there.

I love assassinating people who think they are safe camping.
(Tip: Watch your radar even while camping, most people don’t)

Motion tracker, even at 25 meters, has only a moderate amount of value in a game where people can thrust and pound and charge and sprint. Believe me, I’m that guy that lives and dies by his motion tracker, but in this game those little red dots just seem to instantaneously teleport all over the place. It’s so much easier to just keep my back to a wall.

I don’t expect for the whole map to be a maze of corridors and interior spaces, but I simply would like to see more opportunity to cross distance without being out in the open, and I feel this is their opportunity for that. I mentioned before New Mombasa from Halo ODST. If you look back at that game you will remember that there was still large open spaces in the main city, large enough for vehicles to maneuver easily. Also, if you look at the current arena map, Plaza. If it weren’t for those vehicles in the main road ghosts, warthogs, and mongoose/gungoose could easily run up and down that street. Scorpions and Wraiths could also creep through but I definitely feel they would be at a greater risk (as I mentioned in a previous post). The map would of course need to be expanded and there would need to be more streets that ultimately lead between objectives, but this would still make for a great template. I am not looking to change Warzone all together, there will of course still be the existing maps, but can’t we have other maps with a different play style also?
@ Awake IXI
Maybe I’m not the social butterfly that you are, but I am lucky to get to party with one friend, so twelve is probably not going to happen anytime soon. It definitely sounds like a lot of fun.
Use the advanced sensors armor mod with a silenced weapon (My preferred loadout is a silenced BR, silenced SMG, and advanced sensors) You can just walk into an enemy base and they would never know. You can shoot anything and you don’t show up on radar. Makes infiltration much easier
I honestly get into so many CQC moments when I try to take bases lol It usually doesn’t end well

I am the opposite side of the same penny – I love assassinating, but unfortunately, I can no longer safely rely on my radar to let me get close enough to an enemy player to assassinate them unless I have camo. On top of that, even though I know it’s not LOGICALLY true, I am convinced that my radar has more distance on the front side than the back. I’ll be watching my radar, not get a single blip, and still be spartan charged from behind. It’s ludicrous.

I was not aware of this as an option! Now I just have to wait to unlock the advanced radar… Le sigh.
I always like to keep my enemies at mid to long distance, since I’m not a good cqc player.
