How to go about making fanfiction.

I have thought about making a couple fanfiction stories for Halo, but where to start, why to start where I want to, and how much writing to write is my problem.
If you were in my place wanting to expand on a topic by creating a new story, how do you think I should go about doing such a thing? My wish is to talk about the past problem, the characters involved and how they feel about what is going on, include some well written dialogue and dramatic effect, and have a logical conclusion that benefits the lore.
I have taken a couple writing classes while in college (in my fourth year currently), and I also thought this can be a neat application of it. I might not be as good as your everyday New York Times Bestseller, but I could try something fun.
Do comment and share on what I could do! I would appreciate the feedback.
PS: I wrote a couple stories while in the three or four writing classes I have taken in college. Most were sci fi or war stories.

If I were in your situation, the first thing I’d generally do is get a sheet of paper and a pencil and hand-draw a plot-mountain labeling and identifying the beginning, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

So I’d essentially be planning it out unto paper before moving to a keyboard and turning a simple plot diagram into a full-blown story.

We used to have a Community Creative Writing thread, which I guess you would have liked.
Anyway, you should find the little corner of the universe you’re the most interested in (be it a certain location, character or event) and start running with it.

Thats is a good idea. I need to do that first and formost. but before that…brainstorming is the best thing to do.What part of the lore do I want to add to? such decisions…much wow. :stuck_out_tongue:

Why are there two different threads?

Assuming you are well read / watched / played through the existing lore, however once you focus on a particular area (for example Sanghelli culture), it would be good to refresh yourself with the existing lore, noting any inconsistencies that already exist (so where possible you can avoid this aspect entirely).

The general line of finding a broad beginning, middle, end, and sketching out how any twists / plot devices may need to be used, so they get introduced sufficiently early to not appear to be a ‘deus ex machina’ solution. (An example from Harry Potter, the Whomping Willow which became another exit from Hogwarts was introduced at least one book, if not two before it was actually used).

Good luck.

Because I went to add a comment, but I accidentally hit quote to duplicate the same thing. Other than that, I dont know why It went twice…lol
