How to get caught up to the story in Halo 5?

Hey Guys, I’m coming back to Halo having not played consistently since halo 4 came out and I was always more of a multiplayer person anyway. I read The Fall of Reach years ago and think I understood the story of Halo 1-3 mostly. Halo 4 confused me somewhat (The Diadact/ Librarian? Ancient humans fighting the forerunners? Prometheans? Why are Buck and Locke spartans now and why is his team so awesome in the trailer?) I’ve started playing the MCC collection again. Anyway…I find myself overwhelmed by the content available. (TV shows, Novels, Graphic Novels, Mobile Games, Spartan Ops, Podcasts) I don’t think I have time to read multiple novels in the next month. Is Nightfall worth watching? Whats the best/easiest way to get the gist of whats happening?

Cheap answer: Read the plot summaries of the novels on the Halo wiki

Best answer: Read the books. All of them.

There’s a YouTube channel called “Halo Canon”. Go subscribe to him and do some browsing through his videos, that should catch you up well enough.

I know how you feel, I’ve been keeping up— trying to keep up— and I’m still kind of behind. I have pretty much everything down up until Hunters in the Dark, but the lore is so monolithic at this point that for every one book, comic or video I read and watch, it seems like two more are published or produced. MS have their Star Wars.

Master chief always wins

Sucks, doesn’t it? The only reason I played Halo 4 was to get up to speed for Halo 5 and apparently that was nowhere near enough.

I just posted this in another thread.
What you need is The Fall of Reach, the Forerunner Trilogy and Hunt the Truth. And if you’re a Buck fan, which seems to be the case, New Blood is a must.
The rest would obviously help but they are less important.

I think Halo 4 did a very poor job of that and relied on the extended universe, but Halo 5 hasn’t come out yet. It’s entirely possible that everytging you need to know to understand Halo 5 is in the game (and in Halo 4, I guess).

The things I listed are just the pieces of fiction that tie into Halo 5 the most significantly. I could list most of the EU of as related to Halo 5 (especially the newer books).

This guy’s right on the money I think.

The Forerunner Trilogy is a good read in itself but it is easy to get bogged down quite a bit in figuring out the lore. If you’ve read some of the earlier Halo novels, it’s quite a bit different to those so don’t expect a light-hearted romp through the space countryside.

Hunt the Truth started as an ARG/podcast advertising campaign for Halo 5 earlier this year but I’m hoping they make it a much longer series (343, please make it go on forever). If you only want to read or listen to one thing going in to Halo 5, this is it. It’s made to be accessible for those who have never been exposed to the Halo universe before, but it’s definitely worth listening/playing even if you’ve read every single thing with Halo stamped on it. The story of HTT is set before and during the events of Halo 5 but it doesn’t intersect directly with the main Halo 5 plot. It will give you a heads up on the current state of human affairs - ONI, the UEG, insurrections, the SPARTAN program, and just what is going on in the outer colonies. Best listened to while cowering under a blanket fort in a dark room.

Bring a box of tissues into your blanket fort. Should have put that earlier. Excellent voice acting, writing, and atmosphere

-Yoink!- I’m starting to cry man. Is anyone secretely a gold elite? this Johnson needs a hug.

Back on the original topic, there’s also Last Light and Hunters in the Dark which are the two most recently released standalone Halo novels. I haven’t read either so can’t comment directly on how important they are to the plot of Halo 5, but if you haven’t got the time, patience, or attention span to keep up with a series of things then these two books will give you a bit of story. Last Light follows Chief’s buddies the Blue Team, while Hunters in the Dark is your introduction to one of Locke’s Spartans, Olympia Vale.

What is everyone so confused about for Halo 4? Playing that alone should be more than enough to catch you up for halo 5’s larger story. Maybe Hunt the Truth for the innie story

Thanks Guys, this is really helpful.
