How to get better at online play

hi every one well i might be leaving myself open to ridicule but here goes, what is the best way to learn to be at least be a bit competetive at online play,i practice with firefight etc but i always just get mowed down every time i go into a fight, now i love playing as part of a team and love objective games but i always stay away as i feel like im letting everyone down ,i try the head shot thing and still seem to fail, hey ii dont want to be pro or anything lol but if i could at least stay alive a bit longer and not let the team down it would be a bonus ! the only game i can play without a total dfeat is grifball, cheers anyway feel free to take the p##s

Overall i would say learning by doing.
And IMO Playing smart is much more important than a good aiming!

if you want to nail the headshot trick, play SWAT, i almost always nail it now

the best thing i can tell you is try to stay close to your team. keep track of where they all are, that way you won’t get caught in a 3 vs 1 fight where you will be lucky if you can take 1 with you. other than that, make sure you learn where all the power weapons spawn, and learn their spawn times. for instance, always grabbing rockets as soon as they spawn will be good for you.

other than that, just try to be aware of where your opponents are on the map, once you get used to their movement paths, its much easier to ambush.

but again, the best thing to do is stick with your team, its harder to die when you are team shooting the guy trying to kill you.

I got better through what you could call “playlist progression”. I played some Snipers and Swat to improve my aim, I played Doubles and Multi-Team to improve my small teamwork, then Team Slayer and Big Team to improve how I worked with larger teams. Finally, I started to play Arena, and I started shooting up from Iron Division to the top of Silver. That doesn’t make me good, but certainly better than I was. Now, I mostly play MLG, and it’s not too hard if you communicate, and just playing MLG has probably done more for my game then anything else. The other day, I went into Rumble pit and went +52 in KOTH. Hopefully this works for you.

Oh, and don’t use Armor Lock. None of the competitive playlists have it.

The first thing that you should do is work with your team. You don’t want to be found alone. In objective gametypes, don’t rush in alone for flags or bombs without thinking.Make sure that you can get out safely and that no one will follow you if you are alone. The best thing to do though is to setup with your team.Get your team into the other teams base.Once they have several people dead, take the objective.Bring up the scoreboard, and see who has an X by their names that means that they are dead. You also need to be good at fighting for yourself. You have to avoid shots.Strafing is the best thing to do.Just move left to right on the spot.Do short strafes and long strafes to be unpredictable. When you are almost dead or your shields are low, do either of these 2 things.Jump to avoid the last few shots, or crouch to avoid shots.Jumping is always good, but crouching should only be done at closer ranges as that is where it is most affective. You can Ghandi Hop as an alternative.Just jump in the air and keep pressing the crouch button so that you stay in the air longer. When you and another player are both one shot to death, jump so that you can get a headshot and they may miss. Also, learn the weapon spawns.Rockets, snipers, and other power weapons can quickly change the tide of a battle. In Big team, when using a DMR, crouching lets your reticule bloom grow slowly for a more acurate shot. Also, remember what weapons to use.Always take the Needle Rifle,DMR,and magnum over spray weapons like the Assault Rifle as they are far more effective. With the magnum, don’t shoot until the bloom completely resets the reticule except in close range. Also with the magnum, it helps to scope in, even when they aren’t at long range. With snipers, don’t just flick yor sights and shoot.Take as much time as you need to plant your sights on the person, then shoot.Make sure that your shot will hit before you shoot.Don’t practise with firefight either.Go on MLG, Team Slayer, Team Objective or Squad Slayer as they will probably give you the best practise since they are harder, and give good amounts of combat.Firefight won’t make you that good at matchmaking since it is very different and not as hard. You should also stay calm.Don’t get mad during a game.If you are angry or stressed, you will make bad decisions, and do worse. When I stay calm, I do twice as good as when I’m angry. If you are getting angry or stressed, it is best to stop playing (when the game is over).Pick your fights too.If you simply see a person, don’t rush in after him unless you know that he is alone and doesn’t have something like rockets or a shotgun. It is best to shoot him from a distance or get a teamate to go with you.Having a teamate’s help will mean that you will more than likely kill the guy if he doesn’t have a power weapon.Above all, don’t give up.Don’t quite playing if you aren’t good.If you practice (good practice), and play with good players (not people running at you with Assault Rifles that don’t strafe), you will get good.Halo isn’t a game that you get good at quickly. It takes some time. Most people that play Halo now are actualy very bad at the game.It took me a while to get good.It helps to watch good Halo gameplay.Search “fbwalshyftw” on youtube. He has hundreds of great Halo montages on his youtube channel.Look at commentaries too.Find a team to play with.Make callouts for maps. That means making a name for different parts on the map, and telling you teamates when someone is their. If you found these tips helpfull, feel free to message me for more.

I started a topic about this not to long ago and got a ton of great advice and tips. It has helped me immensely. I suggest reading through this topic http://halo.xbox.com/forums/games/f/7/t/11003.aspx

I’m nowhere near amazing, but first things first, stop playing Grifball as it essentially won’t help you get better at any of the skills required in other playlists. Secondly, practice your aiming…

Aiming Skill
Download this gametype and load it up in the Firefight menu (not Matchmaking) with a difficulty of Normal or Heroic on the Courtyard map.

You are equipped with a Sniper, DMR and Sprint and it pits you against Jackal Snipers, Heretics, Heretic Snipers, Elites and Heretic Heavy (boss wave). This approximately mimics the feel of Matchmaking in terms of weaponry as you’ll be mainly taking fire from Needle Rifles, Magnums, Assault Rifles, DMRs, Snipers and the odd Rocket Launcher, but it is considerably easier than Matchmaking as you’re up against AI who are generally very predictable.

When the game loads, sprint out across the bridge in front of you, turn right and head all the way to the end of the platform. From here you can pick off most of the enemies without too much trouble as they will usually come to you. Just wait until they’re approaching and then pick them off. I personally play it on Heroic and just run around amongst the enemies practicing my no-scopes, but you don’t need to start doing that until you’re comfortable using the Sniper at close range.

If you play this a few times every day before jumping into Matchmaking I can pretty much guarantee that your raw aiming skill will improve. This is just one area of many that is worth paying considerable attention to if you’re serious about improving.

The same gametype is also very useful for practicing your strafe and DMR. Due to the sluggish movement speed in Reach, strafing is not so pronounced, but it does still help in medium range 1v1 battles.

Situational awareness (decision making) and Terrain control
I learnt a lot of these things from playing Rumble Pit. You can get away with things in Rumble Pit that you wouldn’t be able to do in a team game. When you spawn, don’t immediately run forward. Stay still or crouch for a few seconds and wait to see what goes on around you. Watch your radar.

Use your enemies as temporary teammates. Try to get to a vantage point from where you are likely to be able to see your enemies without them seeing you (use camo, if necessary). Do not engage in 1v1 fights. If you come across a lone enemy, run away unless you’re 100% sure you can take him down without any trouble. Wait until you see two or more enemies engaged. When one has done some damage to the other, finish the weak one off and turn your attention to the others. Throw nades into the mix to weaken them.

In general terms, do not engage anyone unless you are fairly sure you can take them down. A good example of this would be if two opponents were jetpacking and you had just picked up rockets. Rather than wasting the rockets on jetpacking opponents, run away and get a vantage point from which you can DMR them or wait until they’re on the ground again. It’s much easier to kill someone with the rocket launcher when they’re not flying around in the air.

Learn that height gives you an advantage. It is easier to kill people from above than it is for them to kill you (in almost all scenarios, with all weapons): i.e. It’s much harder for an opponent below to cause you any damage by throwing a grenade if you’re on a rooftop, than it is for you to cause damage to them by doing the same when they’re on the ground below. The same goes for shooting. You can use height as cover (the floor you’re standing on acts as cover).

In team games, I’d generally advise that you try to stear clear of close quarters combat as it’s so easy to trade kills in these situations. Sit back, grab a DMR/Needle Rifle or other medium-long range weapon and pick people off for as long as you can. When your position is compromised, switch to another vantage point and continue.

In all situations, try to remain calm. It’s amazing how badly people can play when they’re angry. View each death as an opportunity, rather than a loss. Use it to your advantage - i.e. you may have happened to respawn right next to the Rocket Launcher = Free kills!

Map Knowledge
I’d also strongly advise you to go into your temporary history and save the maps you’ve played on in Matchmaking. Load these versions up in Forge and run around, taking note of weapon and grenade locations and timings. You can check the respawn timer on a weapon/grenade by hovering the cursor over it until it goes green and press X.

If you can develop good aim, situational awareness, terrain control and learn to time your power weapons, you will already be well on your way to becoming a much better player than many of the players in Matchmaking.

There are many other aspects to this game, but I’ll let others who are more qualified give you their own take on these.

thanks for all the replys i will take on board everything thats been said and try it all,i love the games and hope i can at least hold my own one day, fingers crossed i may get somewhere soon,im not a quiter so i shall keep plugging away at it lol, thanks again
