So I’ve been playing a lot of gears of war 3 and only a few days ago I found out that I play online maps that are dlc only and I can only play them in my xbox if I have the dlc, however in online I can play them if at least one person who is playing with or against me has them.
So my way to fix dlc would be using this method. Everyone gets access to all the dlc maps, they can play them in matchmaking as long as one person on the party has bought the dlc. However this only applys for matchmaking. For customs people have to buy dlc to play on those maps.
Reasons why I think this could work:
Everytime a new dlc came out, there is always people buying it, if they go to matchmaking with the new dlc map, people who has dlc and people who don’t will be able to play togethe. And so non-dlc people will experience dlc and might like it, so probably they’ll buy it so they can play more times on those maps
This way, there would be no longer dlc-only playlists with few people, and people who bought the dlc could still play them for as long as they want.
TL;DR: Make dlc available for everyone through matchmaking, they can only play if at least on player on that game has the dlc. On customs, people MUST have dlc to play on those maps. Trying new maps=linking them=wanna play more on them=buying dlc
Ok this is not how Gears of War 3 handles its DLC.
To start with, what you said is impossible. In order for the DLC maps to load for each player they would need to be actually be downloaded onto their hard drives. How can a console process and load something that doesn’t exist on either the game disc or the hard drive? It can’t, thats why what you said in impossible.
Secondly, different games will have different matchmaking algorithms to decide how and when a player can play the DLC map packs for each game. Gear of War, Halo and even Call of Duty all have different matchmaking algorithms, so comparing how often DLC show in each game isn’t really a good indication of anything DLC related (other than some games have better methods than others).
Thirdly Gears of War multiplayer has bots. Halo multiplayer doesn’t. So you don’t need a fully lobby of DLC owners (or even a full lobby of players) to play online. If you are the only player in the game, you have more chance to play on your DLC. Once a DLC map is selected to play on, the only other people who can join you is other DLC owners. When the game finishes, if the other players decide to stay with you, then you have an even greater chance to play the DLC.
Finally, Gears 3 actually runs on both a dedicated server and peer-to-peer host system for it online multiplayer. The only difference between the two is that in order to play on the dedicated server, you need to have purchased at least 1 map pack (which if I remember correctly is the Fenix Rising map pack). If you don’t have this map pack, then you play on the peer-to-peer system. This way only DLC owners play on the dedicated server to enjoy the extra content they purchased and non-DLC owners play peer-to-peer on the shipped maps. This way everybody who plays gets what they paid for and keeps everyone happy.
This is why the DLC maps seem to show up more often for DLC owners in Gears 3 than they do for Halo 4.
(Side note - 343 please take note of this and implement it into Halo Xbox One. This way you will keep everyone happy and the fan base interested for longer).
Yes, this is not how gears of war do it for all the dlc’s. However they do this for the horde dlc command pack, which have 3 maps that can be played online but not in private if you don’t own the dlc.
I just though that the concept behind it is good enough to be applied in other games. And I was not saying this could be applied in halo 4, but in the future halos, I believe this is the best approach to dlc that both halo or any other game could do. This way, throught a lifetime of a game there will be always avaiable dlc games if you own the dlc. Yes there are no bots, but since you own the dlc you could still play on the dlc maps.
Imagine if this was already on halo 3, if you bough it today with the dlc’s you still had the chance to play on every map.

Yes but its known that the Horde Command pack wasn’t technically DLC as it was disc locked content and not downloaded to the hard drive. So everyone who bought the game had it already on the game disc to start with, they just paid to unlock it to use. Thats how it was possible.

Jeez I’m not saying to copy what gears did. I’m talking about the CONCEPT behind it!
Why are we still talking about gears?! If the next halo game is still in development, then it is possible to do it
