How to fix “annoying yellow hexagons”?

This forum is not to argue whether or not the hexagons are good or not. Just assume that they are “bad”. How would you fix them (if getting rid of them completely isn’t an option)?

I would probably just make them an outline of a hexagon or turn the opacity way down.

I would remove them. Another option is to make them blue and transparent

Make them so opaque they’re barely noticeable or remove them all together.

They look terrible but they could remove them, I suppose they could make them transparent / opaque ish. I’ll be holding off on Halo Infinite anyway because in general it looks terrible imo, except gameplay but that’s another topic.

They are supposed to be a visual cue that your shields are regenerating?

  • Make them smaller (but increase number to cover similar area).
  • Increased transparency.
  • Small electrical currents running between them (to match what you see on the outside).

I’m not necessarily against some brief obscuring of vision - a penalty for almost dying.

I don’t see the point of them at all. Unless it is an accessibility issue, it’s fixing a problem that isn’t broken. Traditionally when your shields are down, your shields alongside the top border of the screen would flash red. I can see how expanding across the whole screen (like CoD, ODST, Battlefield and every other FPS does) could make it a little easier to recognise when you are taking damage but bright yellow hexagons feel a little bit extra.

So you’re telling us to assume they are bad, and also assume that we can’t get rid of them, and then asking us what we’d do about it? Isn’t that kind of like saying, “if you were writing a novel, and you chose to add a page of random nonsense in the middle of it, but you couldn’t choose to not add it, how would you fix it”?

Obviously since it’s bad, I’d just get rid of it, but since you stipulated that I can’t for some unspecified reason, then…I guess I’d get rid of most of it? I don’t see how this can lead to a productive discussion.

Its “how do you take an idea and improve it”.

I think upping number/transparency and decreasing size is a good move.

I dunno…remove them i guess. They are another level of feedback that your shields are charged again…besides the usaual sound and the bar filling up, but it just looks bad. Does not fit with the rest of the hud at all.

Just show a hexagon pattern shimmering around your hands and legs to indicate your shields are recharging instead the whole display thing and move the make the shield bar stand out when charging back up

You’re human. Get creative. I added that limitation because they may be in there because some fat cat executives from Microsoft liked them and wouldn’t let the devs remove them for whatever reason (microtransaction/customization opportunity?). This forum was supposed to spark a conversation to help give our ideas to the devs instead of just telling them we don’t like them.

I am guessing that their addition has to do with added accessibility features. For example deaf players can’t hear the audio cue, so a visual cue would be super helpful to them. I believe the best solution is to have some opacity control over the visual cue, and have the option to turn it off completely for fans who are content with the audio cue.

Maybe it will be a campaign specific thing? I know that it will get annoying getting shot at from the “dead areas” (super bright portions) while that effect is jumping.

Could be. H5 had different visor HUDs in campaign depending on the character you used. Could also be something you could customize for MP (including being able to turn it off altogether).

Ugh…those were the worst things to implement ever. What a terrible design.

All I can assume is that someone wanted to either create a more"Spartan Feel" or some bonehead in the MP dept wanted to implement a negative effect to being shot, like the blood in Gears or the Red/Grey tint in RDR2 and CoD…any other game that uses that trick to cause an anxiety effect.

My remedy, is to fade the opacity of the center to about 10% yellow, and use a light static effect on the edges of the hex pattern, while scaling the Hex pattern size so you only get the outline of 3 or 4 hexs in the HUD.

My fear is the shield pattern is tied to the actual shield effect the Chief has, that you see in third person when he jumps into the turret. In that case just revert back to the simple classic static effect for everything.

I don’t mind the yellow hexagons. Seems a bit more Halo-y and futuristic than the classic yellow squiggles (in my opinion).

Remove them or tone down the effect by like 90%.

I would remove them

There should be a setting to tone them down, since they looked way too intrusive in the trailer. As you turned the setting down, they get smaller on the outside, eventually going to 0% which would turn it off. I kind of liked the hexagons, although they would probably eventually get annoying.

I would give players the options to turn them off, and if not that, then I would prefer a light blue detail/screen swipe that would trigger when your shields go up (think Halo 3 when you load in as chief after a short cutscene)
